Jamaica v Indians, Montego Bay

Dravid chooses to bat

Cricinfo staff

May 16, 2006

Rahul Dravid has won his first toss of the tour and decided to give his batsmen some batting practice in the tour opener against Jamaica at Montego Bay.

The Indians left out Robin Uthappa, Sreesanth and Ramesh Powar and will use Munaf Patel as a floating 12th player. Powar twisted his ankle during a practice session and though the Indian camp said that it was nothing serious, they probably didn't want to risk playing him with only two days to go to the first ODI at Sabina Park.

Why drop/rest Robin and play Venu? Beats me. And we seem to be playing HS,IP,AA, RP(?). Why 4 bowlers? And why rest SS and MP? Very very funny. I guess MP will be asked to bowl ,looks like some super sub rule being used here.

 Jamaica v Indians, Montego Bay

Sehwag gets India off to a flier

Cricinfo staff

May 16, 2006

India were given an aggressive start to their tour opener by Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid after choosing to bat against Jamaica at Montego Bay. After 14 overs, the Indians were 70 for 1 , Sehwag having contributed a rollicking 33, with four boundaries and a six, and Dravid, who opened in place of the rested Robin Uthappa, unbeaten on a steady 30. Suresh Raina, who came in at the fall of Sehwag, was with the Indian captain.

In conditions cooler than Kingston and with a good breeze blowing across the ground, Sehwag was especially harsh on the wayward Daren Powell and collected a flurry of boundaries off him. Jermaine Lawson, Jamaica's other opening bowler, also failed to find his radar and was taken for runs by the Indian openers.

Andrew Richardson, a right-hand medium pacer, was the most impressive Jamaican bowler and achieved good nip and bounce. He was mainly responsible for pulling matters back for the home side after forcing Sehwag to nick one to the wicketkeeper.

Four of the eight Test players included in the Jamaican side - Chris Gayle, Carlton Baugh, Marlon Samuels, and Jerome Taylor, sat out the game. It was refreshing to see a capacity crowd gathered at the ground, and much of this can be attributed to the large Indian community in Montego Bay.

I have stopped promoting his cause after following his last three innings .
Was surprised why he was not reprimanded for his performance.

I had mentioned a long time ago when we were discussing this - u thought at that time VRV was in.
VRV is NOT in the squad.

This VRV above is probably a Typo for H Singh (instead of H, someone has typed VRV?)

"Kaif had an anxious moment to begin with, surviving an appeal for lbw, but struck the ball cleanly for the most part."

This starting jitter of getting LBW's may prove to be Kaif's nemesis? He stays planted and misses the line of the ball allowing it to strike him (plumb at times!)
