Why India should root for France

If all of India's global footballing associations have always been limited to four-yearly flings with the Brazilian yellow or watching Jess' aspirations triumph over her mother's screechiness in Bend It Like Beckham, then at Germany next month, Vikash Dhorasoo could alter it a great deal.

In what will be a great victory for Indian diaspora, Dhorasoo will become the first footballer of Indian origin to figure at the World Cup, when he lines up for Les Bleus against Switzerland on June 13.

In Raymond Domenech's squad creaking with age and ego, there seem to be no doubts over the inclusion of the 33-year-old Frenchman of Indian-Mauritian origin, drafted in a midfield comprising the genius of Zinedine Zidane and the industry of Patrick Vieira and Claude Makelele.

Born in Harfleur, France to immigrant parents, Dhorasoo was a key fixture in the French National team for a major part of their qualifying campaign. As the team struggled to come to terms with Zidane's international retirement, the shy Dhorasoo was thrown in the deep end as France's playmaker.

Now that Zidane has returned, the current Paris St Germain player would be free of responsibility and can turn on the style unhindred.
