also, Dinesh Chandimal - great buy for RR. Brad Hogg also not bad.

we needed Indian batsmen though...perhaps pick up some of the local uncapped talent - Bist for one!

Parthiv would have been ideal but we got outbid on that

bcci is so fkng stupid...why does any team need 30+ players. absolutely wasteful. good players dont get to play. the only reason to buy is so that they sit on your roster and nobody else can have them. so much for competitive sport.

they should just have opened the ipl to 3 (or now 4) more teams. have a total of 12 teams - two groups of 6. you play 5 games at home and 5 away. and then playoffs.

wtf is this nonsense. teams should have a maximum of 22 or 24 players.

and 5 intls should be allowed in the playing XI.

sorry guys but VVS would have had something to contribute to most teams in a role like SG's. more mentor than player. his knees have been weak for ages, his best fielding position of slip is rarely used in t20 and his batting, that has recently consisted of cross batted swipes that make it look ugly. having said that the 400,000 dollar base price was stupid to say the least. he needs to hang up his kit and get into coaching or mentoring. i hope he does not hang around waiting for a team to pay him to play. one example of that is enough.

Well they are not Kolkuttan's?  Are they?  Last time a certain *uly was drafted by the kuttans he ended up begging his way back in Pune.  Do I need to rehash.

Vinay Kumar, rightfully, went for USD $1 million.

 :notworthy:  :notworthy:  :notworthy:

Eat that DD.

I am very upset at what it might do to his bowling in Australia where he is a vital member of the Indian team. He may not play and bowl his best and fastest, may not lather his face with as much sun screen and opt to stay in the shade, and his IPL success will distract Sachin from achieving his 100th 100.

I do not think he can lower the base price as per the rules of the IPL auction.  BCCI will pay him $400k for 2 years since he has a contract with the Kochi franchise and the franchise is extinct and BCCI will honor the contract of all players that are not picked up.  So it worked up great for VVS in the end game and he is in a win win situation.

I think you are right. he cant lower the price. that in itself was the root cause for him not getting picked. only a stupid team would pay 400 k or vvs when there are players like bravo around for 100k. in this format, as sad as that may be, the fringe players are more suited than a player like vvs.

Actually IPL is BCCI biksha for all the begging he did after the last auction.  He got thrown out of his home town team for being a cancer.  And what else one can expect from him in this IPL.  When he was with the KKR as a player his was the only team that never made it to the SF.  Like I said without players of the class of RD, VVS, SRT, AK on his side while he was the skipper of the Indian team he showed what a mug he is.

Hey unlike you Ganguly fans VVS does not need an IPL at this stage.  Eden 2001 to Durban 2011 his legacy is secured and sealed.  Plus BCCI is paying VVS $400k for each of the next two years, so he came out a winner here too.  A true VVS fan would never want to see him in a 20-20 set up after he crossed the 35 mark in age.  So there....

Yes for Ganguly fans.  Afterall the team this guy played for is the only team not even make a SF in 4 years.  Let us see what he does this year.  He even used Bengal cricket as his fiefdom to play Ranji after retiring all in the name of preparing for IPL.  WOW.

Can someone explain...

ndia allrounder Ravindra Jadeja fetched the highest bid in the IPL 2012 auction, being signed up by Chennai Super Kings for more than $2m...

...if total purse is 1.4 million, how did they buy for 2 M...or total purse is 2 M?

There are no Pakistanis even this time? Why would anyone pay 1 M$ to Vinay Kumar and leave out cheap Siddle? They could have bought Siddle,Rampaul and Swann for that....!!!

Gavaskar said on NDTV that it was a waste of money to pay 1 M$ for a bowler who is not an all-rounder just for bowling at best 4 overs in a match.

To be fair to Vinay,I think he can also get some runs at the tail end.

I think Vinay can contribute with the bat on sub-continental tracks but would not spend $1mill on him though he is surely worth more than half of Jadeja which should give you an indication about the insanity.

I wish Laxman(whose elegant double hundred at Eden gave us the only victory of last century ) can save us from downfall

Bending rules: Board’s big boss has set the trend

The IPL chief executive went on and on about the importance of fairplay and sticking to the rules on Saturday. We doubt there were any takers for it. Not among the franchisees at least. After all, the current mess is because most stakeholders in the tournament have believed ‘Rules are meant to be broken’.
Sahara India joined the bandwagon quite late (in 2011 edition). But, following the dealings from the periphery, the temptation to ask to tinker with the rules would be a natural reaction for them. They will be right to say that the precedent had been set long before they entered the fray.

Sahara India is only the latest to try that stunt. They are just the sponsors of the Indian team, we have had examples of the rules being rewritten in such a way so as to ensure the interests of the current Board chief’s team are taken care of.

There have been enough cases of the rules being flouted in the IPL and its offshoot- the Champions League T20, that the franchisees have the right to believe that it is a given thing.

At first there was to be an entirely new auction after a three-year period. Even though, the majority of the franchisees wanted it to stay that way, still, a new rule allowed teams to retain four players. Only N Srinivasan’s Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians (MI) benefited from it. The two got to hold on to the two biggest brands in Indian cricket. CSK got to retain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and MI got Sachin Tendulkar.

These were the only two outfits to retain their full quota of four players each. At whose behest, it was done is anybody’s guess.

Among the rest of the six franchisees, a total of only four players were retained.

It was followed by MI easily being able to convince the governing body to be allowed to field five foreigners in the Champions League. The reason was injury toll, but one of the names in the injury list was firing on all cylinders in Mumbai’s under-22 selection trials. Vijay Mallya’s Royal Challengers Bangalore then got their pound in the Champions League by playing both Dirk Nannes and Chris Gayle, who had actually come in as his replacement.

Rest assured, by doing what they have done, there will be no end to this sort of dramas because rules simply don’t count in the IPL raj.

He did his bit when *uly was the captain picking up the slack for lack of enough runs from the bat of the lazy bum *uly.  But there is only so much even the best of them could do when mediocrity rules the roost top to bottom be it in the BCCI or with in Team India.

so with pune dropping out, they didn't buy anything?
It was their own fault because they were dickheads wanting to mend rules for them just because allegedly rules were mended for others in the past.

i really dont see them asking for YS's equivalent money as being "dickheaded" in anyway whatsoever. So, by your logic, Sahara should have YS walk out for a game, claim he is unfit, which it is obvious he is and then they would be given the money to buy players? thats the ony other viable option i can see.

what this perfectly objective article doesn't mention is that 25% of auction purse was cut for the first retained player, 12.5% for the next one, 6.25% for the third one and 3% for the 4th.

Chris Gayle and Nannes both playing was a joke, it shouldn't have happened.

i didnt find the 5th intl player in the CLt20 to be such a big deal. in fact the other competing IPL teams didnt find a problem with it.

IPL clearly has to sort out this whole paying over and above the salary purse business.

Let me help you with this from the perspective of Laxative addicts

Sahara is owning Pune team which has purchased SG in their team. So anyone who associates themselves with SG has to be a dickhead. Now please do not ask if in the same token anyone who played under SG's leadership should also be called a dickhead because they never refused playing for him!
