Virat Kohli sobers 'drunken' Aussie fans with maiden ton
Reuters | Jan 26, 2012, 03.31PM IST

ADELAIDE: India batsman Virat Kohli said his maiden Test century in the fourth test on Thursday was a fitting riposte to "drunken" Australian fans who have heckled him from the stands throughout the series.

Kohli was fined half of his match fee in the second Test in Sydney for responding to barracking from the crowd by gesturing at them with his middle finger.

After struggling early in the tour and coming under pressure for his place in the side, the 23-year-old scored a half century in the third Test in Perth and followed that up with the first century of the series from an Indian batsman on Thursday.

"In Sydney, they were after me because I hadn't scored any runs, and today they were (angry) because I got a hundred. It hasn't changed only the reason has," he told reporters.

"It is really, really frustrating at times, they say things which shouldn't be said on a cricket field.

"If they come here to enjoy a game of cricket, they should do that and not get drunk and abuse cricket players. It's not fair, if the players say anything they're fined and banned.

"To give it back verbally and then score a hundred is even better," he added.

Kohli stuttered on 99 runs and, after almost being run out, had a verbal altercation with Australian bowler Ben Hilfenhaus which resulted in Ricky Ponting acting as peacemaker.

"I like to play my cricket like that. I like to give it back," Kohli said.

"They sledge when they get frustrated, and obviously it was hot out there, and they were sledging us to ruin our concentration. During that partnership, they were really, really low."

LEARNING CURVE

Kohli, already a proven performer in the one-day game, said his success after a faltering start in Test cricket showed that more patience was required when youngsters are trying to break into the India team.

"Some people have great starts to a certain format, some take some time," he said.

"You have to be patient with someone who comes in. They are good enough and when they are mentally tough enough they will be more consistent in Test cricket.

"I'm learning every game and as long as I can perform and learn at the same time, I'm going to become a better cricketer.

"I always wanted to be a successful Test cricketer for India and hopefully this is the start for me."

India are already 3-0 down in the series and finished the third day of the fourth Test 382 runs behind the Australians but Kohli said he thought victory was still possible.

"The ball's turning square now and with (spinner Ravi) Ashwin bowling well now, you never know," he said.

"If we can get two or three wickets early on in the morning, we still have two days of the Test to try and chase down the score they set."

VK should know that crowd abuse is there in India also ..People throw stones, bottles all kind.

One can understand in Sydney the SCG is like a closed bowl. Adelaide stadium is open; Players can hear the abuse from the crowd that far?  It must be the frustrated Indians in the crowd  ::)

clutching-at-straws-department

Dravid not bowled, a good sign for the next series
Sehwag not giving a single chance till the delivery he got out to
Gambhir not out to a rising delivery
Yadav for once being less than 5 on the economy

Nathan Lyon takes more than two wickets which he means he is on that India tour, I can already see Virat licking his lips

Siddle to Kohli, OUT, oh well, that is the last thing India needed, last specialist batsman gets run out off the final delivery of the penultimate over of the day trying to protect the nightwatchman, unbelievable, Virat worked a length ball towards midwicket and set off, Hilfenhaus, the fast bowler, ran to the ball, threw off balance and found the stumps before Virat could find the crease with a desperate dive, comfortably out, Australia in a huddle, Virat shouts in frustration as he walks back
V Kohli run out 22 (96m 62b 2x4 0x6) SR: 35.48

http://blogs.espncricinfo.com/sadisthour/archives/2012/01/stop_the_madness.php

Stop the madness

Ben Hilfenhaus’ body is built for a purpose, and you can’t imagine that purpose was ever running, diving and throwing all in one motion.

Hilfenhaus doesn’t have the body shape of an athletic fielder. He’s not a huge man, but he’s got a solid trunk on him, more tree than ballet dancer. There aren’t many moving parts. It just all seems to be made to propel the ball at a fair rate and swing it away.

That’s why it was odd that a Hilfenaus run, dive and throw was the final sign that India have just not been up to it this summer. The whole thinking behind the incident told you everything you needed to know about Team India.

A nightwatchman came in for a No. 7 in a dead-rubber Test that was already lost only for the proper batsman to try and farm the strike and be run out by a few centimetres when the opposition fast bowler threw the stumps down as India’s star batsman didn’t quite dive to full effect.

There isn’t a part of this run-out that doesn’t show India just hasn’t been with it this series. They are every bit the middle-aged guy with a comb over and party shirt dancing on his own in the corner of a crowded nightclub.

The idea that Wriddhiman Saha, who had handled himself very well in the first innings during a tough period, would need a nightwatchman is absurd. But let’s say that he wanted one.

Why was Virat Kohli trying to get on strike so bad, it wasn’t as if India needed that single, any chance of winning the game had disappeared long ago? Surely it wasn’t so that Ishant Sharma didn’t have to face Nathan Lyon, known tail-end destroyer that he is.

Even Virat’s dive was not fully stretched out, it was a technical error in the middle of a bunch of basic cricket smarts errors. Perhaps he was tired. Mentally and physically.

And why didn’t Sharma say no, any single there was unnecessarily risky, and he must have known his job was to face the bowling, not stand at the non-strikers end.

Also, why is Ashwin India’s spokesman, they have a media manager already, so why is Ashwin sent out every time India have a bad day when the average age of the side is 110-years old. Surely one of the experienced players should come out, Tendulkar hasn’t come out once, and VVS only once.

And while we’re talking about it, why was Australia p***ing about with stupid batting and not just slogging to set a total. They had five wickets in hand. Just have a go.

Can you even believe they batted on for 11 minutes after lunch? I mean why does it really matter if they are 500 runs in front or 478, or 283,095 runs in front, it wasn’t like India were going to go for one total, or feel psychologically obstructed by another.

This is all ridiculous. If I were Virender Sehwag, I would have probably requested the extra 30 minutes be tacked on to the day’s play, because what is the point of a fifth day in this Test.

My main fear at the moment is that CA and the BCCI will conspire to add another Test to this series and ESPNcricinfo will request that I cover that Test.

Just end this. Now. Please. Come on. I’ve done my time. This is pointless. Help me.

I don’t care about Ponting’s comeback, Clarke’s good PR, Virat’s finger, Dhoni’s suspension, Sehwag’s natural game, Siddle’s wrist position or even Sachin’s pointless statistical milestone, I just want this all to stop. Even you Big Bash, you can p*** off too. Please end Australian summer. I don’t care if I’m abducted by rough-loving aliens, just get me out of here. It’s enough already.

Eight is more than enough for me.

---

Looks like the old farts don't even want to show up for the press. A bunch of a-holes..

keep dreaming ...
Actually i did start dreaming when VS was batting. However the game is not lost yet. At least this is the way i think. Saha has shown what he is capable in last inngs, Ishant(BTW this kid needs some mental toughness) can frustrate Aussies, Ashwin is playing as a batsman in this series, Zaks has done it in past. Umesh Yadav does not need to bat  ;)
Seriously- I don't lose a game or heart till it is lost(just my style). Simple message to IS and WS once they walk out to bat - Will see you at Lunch in couple hrs! Do whatever it takes to hang in there. Repeat the same at lunch and tea. A sports man never gives fighting, If he does he does not belong in field. This is all the game is about. I have seen and been part of games being won from hopeless positions. No, I am not saying all games will be  won from such positions but never thow your gloves.Who know which punch will knock the opponent out. Put your head down, concentrate on each ball and play it in way that you wont get out. Who knows Ashwin will come in as a specialist bat for next series  :P. Good luck India.

Seriously - the problem is our cricket team is not well paid or well fed enough to think like the way you are thinking. So again....STOP DREAMING ABOUT OTHERS ...DREAM ABOUT YOURSELF!

Congrats to the Aussie team on the series win, 4-0.  Clarke has been a class act through out.  Kudos to Ponting for reviving his form from a lean patch of close to 2 years and getting two tons including a double ton.  Nothing like playing at home in familiar conditions to get the monkey off the back.

Strange niether SRT nor VVS being able to get a single ton between them this time around that added to the woes and one of the reasons for the drubbing.  SRT in the 4 prior tours(92, 99, 03, 07) and VVS in 3 prior tours (99, 03, 07) got atleast one century for India.

Clarke and Ponting with the bat were the difference between the two sides in the end game when one looks at the numbers.
