UTTERLY RIDICULOUS REVIEW. England 136-7 (Swann not out 26) This is the worst review in history, a hilarious piece of nonsense. Gul has a shout for LBW with a ball that pitches a million miles outside Swann's leg stump. Misbah is reluctant to review the not-out decision, but Gul eventually persuades him to do so. Replays confirm that the ball pitched closer to deep midwicket than to the stumps. Misbah shakes his head sadly, and now both sides are out of reviews.

commentators calling Ajmal a chucker.

Which he is. all the offspinners from Pak have the same action - saqlain, shoaib malik, ajmal. all bowl the doosra. and all bend their arms.

This might be speaking too soon, but what happened to the ENG side? They were wearing their non-IPL playing as a badge of honor. What happened? How come they collapsed to 192? What's the excuse? The first test they play after becoming #1, they slip so badly?

Really?

Let us see how PAK has done since they stopped playing IPL in 2009.

2009
vs  SL  ==  Win - 0, Lost - 0, Draw - 2    (Home)
vs  SL  ==  Win - 0, Lost - 2, Draw - 1    (Away)
vs NZ  ==  Win - 1, Lost - 1, Draw - 1

2010
vs AUS  ==  Win - 1, Lost - 4
vs ENG  ==  Win - 1, Lost - 3
vs SA    ==  Win - 0, Lost - 0, Draw - 2    (Home in Dubai)

2011
vs NZ  ==  Win - 1, Lost - 0, Draw - 1
vs WI  ==  Win - 1, Lost - 1
vs SL  ==  Win - 2, Lost - 0, Draw - 1      (Home in Dubai)
vs BD  ==  Win - 2

So the team that did not play in IPL in 2009 and 2010 did not win any series in those 2 years. Not playing in IPL surely helped them brilliantly there. In 2011 they won 2 away series (NZ, and the brilliant BD), and won a home series against SL.

You saying that makes them a better team than ENG? Really?

You started off saying "speaking too soon". Same holds for me. I was only probing with a question. Obviously from the first day of a series nothing can be said. Pak could well lose 0-3 or who knows win 3-0. The point is, both are non-IPL teams. So win/loss will be determined by non-IPL factors. So don't bring IPL into this.

Interesting take on the DRS ?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/cricket/16598883.stm

But the DRS does not care how much of a stride you have put in, it simply judges the decision on whether the ball pitches in line, and whether the ball would have gone on to hit the wicket.

Before DRS you would have played Ajmal as a bit of a leg-spinner, with your pad covering his off-spinner and your bat more off-side to deal with his doosra.

But with the DRS, you are always vulnerable, and somehow England have got to adjust not just to playing against clever, accurate and deceptive spin bowling but also how they are going to do it without using their pads.

Indeed, when India watch this and see the impact that the DRS has on batting against spin bowling, I wouldn't mind betting that they eat some humble pie and agree to have DRS in force for their series before Christmas. It would be madness not to.

Yesterday's DRS decision against KP was interesting. KP was definitely down the track and I suspect more than 1.5 meters. Has that been removed from DRS ?

Paks having a good day in the office - 273-5 now with a few overs left in the day. A sizeable 81 run lead which can hopefully double tomorrow (in the least).

Pak lead by 122 with 2 wickets still in hand in the first inning.

This match could actually be a nailbiter.

I'm planning to go watch tomorrow...stadium is right next to house and entry is free apparently!

notch another one up for DRS...

Swann to Saeed Ajmal, OUT, 81.0 kph, given out caught at short leg. Referred immediately but we can't use hotspot because it's out a frame apparently...now on the normal replays it looks as if it might have missed Ajmal's glove before coming up off the pad to Cook under the lid but no hotspot means that the third umpire has no conclusive evidence to overturn Billy Bowden's out decision to Ajmal has to go...
Saeed Ajmal c Cook b Swann 12 (22b 1x4 0x6) SR: 54.54

snuffs out a very irritating 30 run partnership.

Adnan Akmal should go for broke now and collect another 20

127 lead is sizeable but not matchwinning

i dont understand why they need hotspot to confirm. its pretty clear that it missed the bat and glove - can't the third umpire convey that?

wicket taken on a technicality.

apparently because hotspot wasn't available for that ball, it doesn't count as a review for Pakistan. wtf. Ajmal wanted it reviewed!

masterful shepherding of the tail by Akmal. 3 overs and Cheema hasn't faced a ball yet.

and wont, for now, as Akmal is still on strike for the new over!

HAHA THIS IS F'N HILARIOUS

Umar Gul to Strauss, OUT, 135.7 kph, caught down the leg side and Strauss is reviewing it. Strauss tried to run it down to to the leg side and there was a sound, we have the benefit of a proper Hotspot view this time and there are no visible marks, it seems now that Strauss is safe but the verdict is awaited. He's given him out. Well I'm not totally convinced. There was a sound but Hotpsot didn't reveal anything conclusively. I guess it evens out a bit now with the Ajmal dismissal
AJ Strauss c †Adnan Akmal b Umar Gul 6 (16b 0x4 0x6) SR: 37.50

why use *Spot at all? give me the money instead and i'll adjudicate based on normal camera replays.

umpire's decision was out in both cases, and remained out. in one instance hotspot was available, in the other it wasn't. in neither case did hotspot produce any evidence that the batsman was out.

I'm confused.

exactly why we are debating the DRS technologies because they are not really predictable - hwak eye seems it has a margin of error of at least 10% and there is probably credence to the  cool bat theory

BTW Prior has an excellent Test average of 45. and he always excels in these situations and bats well with the (competent) tail.

what a find for England after the jokers they had prior to this - foster, jones, read, ambrose

BTW did you know that Pattinson (the guy who destroyed us in Melbourne and Sydney) has a brother who played a Test for England in 2008??

Umar Gul to Swann, FOUR, he gets more adventurous this time! Short delivery and he clubs it down to deep midwicket, clean hit
56.4
Umar Gul to Swann, FOUR, 131.8 kph, so Pakistan will have to bat again! Top-edge off a short ball, it clears the keeper comfortably, so England have avoided one embarassment

Ajmal does the sajda as his team-mates gather around him. That's his second ten-for in Tests. Just the short formalities to be completed, Pakistan need 15. This game will end today. Any bets on Ajmal opening the innings, anyone?

and the No. 1 curse hits england too

and what a brilliant article on cricinfo about him being the only guy practicing. they couldnt see him practicing because its closed off.

what if he took that nets 'specialist' Raghavendra VCMKDF and they were penning retirement speech for 3 hours?

Ajmal does the sajda as his team-mates gather around him. That's his second ten-for in Tests. Just the short formalities to be completed, Pakistan need 15. This game will end today. Any bets on Ajmal opening the innings, anyone?

and the No. 1 curse hits england too

it's called mindf**k. Ajmal leaked to the press that he had invented a new delivery. He took 10 wickets, didn't use it, and threatened to use it next time  :notworthy: :notworthy:

So, the #1 ranked team (that proudly says it's players don't play IPL) lost to the #5 ranked team (whose players desperately want to play IPL). I wonder what the cause could be. Alien/unhelpful conditions for #1 team, or not playing IPL?

This is what  Michael Vaughan has to say:
Former England captain & TMS pundit
The England batting has been embarrassing at times in this Test. The conditions are different to what they're used to, but they're number one in the world, they've had two three-day games to prepare and they've got all the analysts you could want to tell them about the bowlers they're going to face. But they have just not been able to adapt to the conditions and apply themselves under pressure.
