India touring Australia 2011-12 : 3rd Test WACA Perth
« on: January 06, 2012, 07:17:34 AM »
Team for the 3rd test.
Open with Dravid. Drop sehwag , add play either Mithun or Vinay to the attack. Dravid anyway is a virtual opener in tests these days and Mithun/Vinay can contribute 20-30 overs that Sehwag contributes  ( MSD will never play 5 bowlers though!)
Rohit in for VVS ( pains to say it but it is time). 20 average in overseas for a player like Laxman is demeaning.
we have a bowling coach and still bowlers bowl all over the place.fix it.

I would make Duncan Fletcher run around 10 laps of the stadium during practice. Let us blame him for Poonam Pandey faithful husband diagnosis.

I would say the openers arent getting touched. She-wag is untouchable .... isnt that what we get with him going for his shots? Gambhir showed some signs of life.

I am worried about Dravid. Getting bowled repeatedly for him seems bad. Lakhan showed some signs of life in excellent batting conditions BUT he is the one I really worry about.

Kohli is done. He will join Raina on the ODI/T20 team only list. 2 tests for Rohit to score a 100 and secure his spot.

I think we are screwed. What disappoints me the most is not our first innings collapse. You can dig deep down and find some excuses of collapsing on a green wicket on Day 1. The fact that on the same pitch where we could not get ANY Aussie out .... and punter, pup and Pussy all scored 100+ with Pup charging almost to 400! none of our maharathis could score even a 100?

we had 3 maharathis (or 2 maharathis and a wanna be maharathi) get to 50 but could not convert it to a 100? This on a pitch easier to bat on than the Des Plaines* ground!

Maybe time has come to say permanent good bye to Tests. If these guys cant bat to score 100's or more on SUCH easy pitches against pie throwers what can they do?

I say lets get rid of all these effing maharathis!

*Yeah you wont know!

England:

0/128
4/59
3/66
2/131
1/159
1/97

West Indies:

1/80
1/49
0/14
2/95
1/84
0/15

Australia:

0/48
2/43
1/144

Last 3 series:
19 wickets, 1212 runs for a bowling average of (drum roll) ..... 63.79

Not saying he should be dropped (TINA, after all). But when your 2nd best bowler - given the conditions - has returns like this, you will lose.

That is an eye opener.  IS should get a 5 fer or two at WACA since the conditions there favor bowlers that hit the deck hard that will have a lot of bounce and carry.  Hope IS makes full use of the conditions and get us a few wickets and help out ZK.

To win a series in Australia, we need at least 2 matchwinning fast bowlers - an occassional Agarkar or Pathan spurt will not win us series. We just dont have any.

The situation is similar for teams visiting India these days .. they need 2 quality spinners.

Losing with the "maharathis" is more insulting than losing with the younger players. It is also an investment for the future and for the survival of Indian Test cricket.

IMO ..Both VK & RS should play the next test. They should make VK bat higher..No 6 is difficult position especially in this series. Every time VK came to bat there was lot of pressure on him and bowlers were at their best.
In ODI matches he comes at no 3 or 4 and bats with lot of maturity. In Tests with all the greats around he is pushed down kind of acts like a kid.

Indian cricket today  missing some one like Raj Singh Dungarpur to take the bold steps, bring in the youth and to promote the right talent.

nice green track awaits. and it will be faster than the go karts too.

gavaskar is a d***fk. yes, over-practicing now will make up for a lifetime of reflexes honed by playing on turning tracks with only dead grass.

they have played 4 games already on this tour. it is enough practice. you are either good enough to win a Test or not at this stage.

Lets not forget that our Maharathis have been practising ahead of the tour in Australia for abt a month. They also have 22-16 years of experience in throwing in the twoel when the going gets tough.

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/cricket/green-waca-pitch-leaves-indian-tourists-reeling/story-fn67w6pa-1226241144198
A SEVERE bout of "green fever'' swept the WACA yesterday as a traumatised Indian cricket team were shocked by the sight of a wicket they see only in nightmares.
Indian captain MS Dhoni, who barely ever looks at wickets before match eve, made a solo visit to the WACA block to see one of the most heavily grassed wickets ever prepared here.

He looked down stonefaced for about 15 seconds as he prodded the pitch with his hands.

So heavily grassed was the deck it was the first occasion in memory a Test strip was greener than the outfield. By late yesterday it had lost some of its greenness but Friday's third Test, much to the delight of local fans, a blood and thunder Test match beckons.

When Indian batsman Rahul Dravid was on his way to the wicket yesterday one of his team-mates gave him a playful hug and suggested he go no further.

Related CoverageRelated CoverageSpicy wickets get Boof's blessing
.End of sidebar. Return to start of sidebar.
When he reached the wicket Dravid quipped to the groundstaff "so you didn't get the email?''

When they replied "what email?'' he said "the one which said take the grass off the wicket.''

Several Indian players asked groundstaff how much grass will be taken off the wicket for the tourists loathe seaming conditions.

Curator Cam Sutherland will give it a slight haircut today or tomorrow but it will not be given a short back and sides.

The grass coverage was slightly deceptive yesterday because it only takes three days to prepare a Test wicket in Perth.

But it still looks tailor made for the seamers and if it retains its greenness there is a strong chance Australia will scrap its plan to play Nathan Lyon and promote Mitchell Starc into a four man pace attack.

India's training had its traditional browns cows feel about it but there were signs that the tourists realise they must lift their game, not simply in the middle but at their low energy training sessions.

For the first time this year new balls were used at training and, at the urging of the team's coaches, flighty opening batsman Virender Sehwag made a strong-willed effort to let dangerous balls go outside off stump.

India have had enough of his airy lead-footed swipes being written off as "just the way he plays.''

His recklessness is starting to be seen as a combination of selfishness and laziness and an inability to adapt to challenging conditions.

India even brought in a cameraman to film all of their top order.

Fast bowler Ishant Sharma, so impressive here four years ago, bowled with impressive pace and zest in the nets.

He was understood to have still been angry at being photographed giving local fans "the bird'' after leaving a go-karting session the night before.

Team management have decided to take no action against Sharma for the incident.

The Indian team have been under attack from all quarters with spin bowling legend Bishen Bedi claiming the nation has developed an unhealthy obsession with Sachin Tendulkar's elusive 100th international century and have turned a milestone into a millstone.

Tendulkar's search for his elusive 100th century continues at the WACA this week but former Indian captain Bedi believes there is cringe factor to the century circus following Tendulkar around the country.

"This business about Sachin Tendulkar's 100th 100 is not so much a monkey on Sachin's back it is a bloody monkey on the back of every Indian,'' Bedi said from Delhi.

"Had Sachin scored his 100 in Sydney and India had lost the game Indian fans would still have celebrated. We are far more figure conscious and statistically minded than anywhere else - and it is not good.

"Records are meant to be broken. You don't go for them. This is not a mathematical exam. It's sport. It's a collective effort.''

Four magical, suffocating days in Perth
For one of Australia's openers in their 2008 match against India at the WACA, it was the only Test he has played
Chris Rogers
January 11, 2012

I've heard that many guys don't end up remembering the first Test match they play - it becomes a blur in the excitement of it all. But when it turns out to be your one and only, you savour every moment in retrospect.

It's nearly four years to the day since I received an unexpected phone call from then chairman of selectors Andrew Hilditch, telling me I had been added to the squad as cover for an injured Matthew Hayden. Australia were riding high on the back of a record-equalling 16 straight Test wins and had flown into my hometown, Perth, after beating India in an incident-packed game in Sydney, which featured the infamous Harbhajan-Symonds Monkeygate affair.

Walking into that Australian change room, I wasn't really sure what to make of it. On the one hand, my life had just taken off dramatically, and on the other all the talk was about how we had to be on our best behaviour. Throw in a team full of legends on each side, and uncertainty about whether I was even going to play, and it was a confusing couple of days. It wasn't until after training two days before the game, when I watched Hayden limp through a fitness test and shake his head, that I realised a life dream had come true.

All that awaited was a few sleepless nights and then the honour of pulling on that elusive baggy green in front of a packed WACA ground.

The preparation seemed low key. Perhaps the players were a little jaded after four Tests and a number of flights, with two Tests to go. I don't remember being summoned to any meetings, and I was left to my own devices the practice-free day before. On the eve of the game I even managed to have dinner with my parents. But not a minute went by when I wasn't thinking of the challenge ahead.

I can tell you it's an amazing and humbling experience to walk into a change room that has Ricky Ponting, Adam Gilchrist, Brett Lee, Michael Clarke, Michael Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Shaun Tait and Andrew Symonds, plus a few more in it. It's easy to get caught up in star-gazing. And when they pat you on the back when you are presented your cap by Test legend Justin Langer, it's positively daunting.

As much as I loved every moment of it, there was an unmistakable current of tension running through the side. The fallout from Monkeygate, and Cricket Australia's reticence to pursue it, were playing havoc. It seemed as though the cricket was a sideshow.

It was almost a relief for me when we lost the toss and were made to field. I thought it might give me some time to adjust to the feel of Test cricket.

Rod Marsh used to warn against playing Tests in Perth in January, and sure enough, it was a blazing 40-degree day and I spent most of the morning fruitlessly chasing Virender Sehwag and Co's cover-drives out towards the practice wickets.

A slow pitch, unlike any I had played on the WACA, plus the heat, combined to blunt our four-paceman bowling attack. During the off-season a decision had been taken to replace the top few inches of the pitch with sods, and all season it had been unpredictable. My WA team-mate Brad Hogg had been hoping to play a Test for the first time on his home ground but was made 12th man. I felt for him.

Tennis-ball bounce and the lack of swing or seam took the sting out of Lee, Johnson, Stuart Clark and Tait. Both Lee and Tait were reaching the 150kph mark, but the Indians seemed to have time to spare playing them.

A century partnership by Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar unfolded in front of me, and by the time we removed them, the heat had almost knocked us out.

Taity, in his first Test in Australia, had bowled a horror last over before lunch. In trying to fit another in before the break, he overstepped and wided, and the confidence seemed to flow out of the big man on the cut strip - in front of 20-odd thousand people. He had gone into the match with an injured hamstring.

By the end of the first day our backs were up against it, after we'd dismissed only six of the Indian batsmen. I don't think I'd ever been so drained after a day. Not only had the heat been unbearable, the intensity of the contest and a bigger crowd than I'd ever played in front of made for a unique experience.

The next morning turned out to be productive for us, and I even managed to take a decent diving catch at point. Then it was my turn to bat. Comments from the crowd when fielding, like "Get ready to bat Rogers" and "Don't stuff up" were friendly, I'm sure. Shame they did nothing to ease my ever-growing nerves.

A cover-drive out of the middle to the scoreboard boundary slowed my heartbeat considerably, and I thought I was ready to get stuck in and grind out some runs. An iffy lbw decision - I thought it was sliding down leg - put an end to that, and before I knew it, I was taking off the pads in extreme disappointment.

I will always remember telling my father that facing every ball was like a match in itself, due to the pressure that comes with that level of cricket. Michael Hussey said after the game that people who thought batting in Shield cricket was harder than Tests had rocks in their head

Suddenly we were in all sorts of trouble. The bland pitch that had blunted our quickies came alive for the Indians, and their medium-pace seamers had our batsmen in all sorts of trouble. In what seemed the blink of an eye we were back out in the field 118 behind - with Sehwag cutting balls for fun as we scrambled to limit the damage.

My mood wasn't made any better when standing next to the umpire who had given me out - Asad Rauf. He told me that if he'd had the benefit of the replay, he wouldn't have given me out. It felt like a punch to the chest. But I wasn't the first person to get a dodgy decision, and I won't be the last. Still, I respected him for telling me that, even after Hawk-Eye had estimated the ball was angling crazily back to clip the leg stump.

As with every time I'm dismissed, I analysed what I did wrong and saw I'd fallen towards the off side getting out in the first innings, and was determined not to repeat the mistake. I was in good touch getting to 15, and felt I was doing a lot of good things. Then Pathan produced a gem - directed at off, forcing me to play and moving away late, that I could only get an edge to - and my first Test was over.

I will always remember telling my father that facing every ball was like a match in itself, due to the pressure that comes with that level of cricket. Michael Hussey said after the game that people who thought batting in Shield cricket was harder than Tests had rocks in their head. The pressure from the crowd and the media was almost suffocating.

It would have been nice to be a part of a record-breaking side, but it wasn't to be. I do remember the pure elation of being picked and the soul-crushing disappointment of failure and losing. What happened in the middle still feels like it passed in the blink of an eye.

Shaking hands at the end, I prayed I would get at least one more chance to sing the winning song and prove to myself I belonged in Test cricket. "Get more runs," I was told when I lost my Australian contract at the end of that summer.

But I feel privileged to have squeezed into one of the best Australian teams ever, and to have had an experience at the very peak of my sport. And as all one-Test wonders must sing to themselves in the shower occasionally: "You can't take that away from me..."

....

Is this claiming that the team does not know what kind of wicket awaits them when the select teams or just that the job is assigned to someone else?

Amidst all this cynicism & ppl changing to LN etc ;) I am sticking my neck out and predicting an Indian victory here.. The things that worked for Aussies so far are not working for them any more... I am banking on SRT, VK & MSD ( yes MSD ...he will make runs here.. His kinda pitch)

All 3 wickets -  nothing due to the pitch. A sign of team not applying itself
