IND v ENG - Test 4
« on: August 18, 2011, 12:39:59 PM »
No thread for the 4th test? Surprising.

ENG 75/0 in 26. It started raining during lunch. RPS in for PK.

SG speak -

SG made a good comment about role of NCA in player rehabilitation. He said that it is NCA's duty to look after the fitness of players, specially bowlers, during off season but it doesn't seem like they are doing it. Although this is nothing new but it still needs to be said again and again. Maybe someone in power will hear it.

Having said that, if this point was made by a Bhogle or Shastri and posted on the DG here, I probably would have seen comments like "What a twat? What's new? Doesn't everyone know it already?".

NH made a comment that IPL was hurting test cricket in IND and SG spoke against it. He said that that was not the case. He said "I have played in IPL. There were days when I would play an IPL game, go home and think what have I done today? Nothing.". His point was that IPL games are not as taxing on players as they are made out to be. That kind of supported my point that IPL is not the biggest scourge in IND for test cricket.

Having said that, my first reaction on hearing him say that was - Exactly!!!! What did you do? Nothing!! That's why no one wanted you in IPL anymore. Just quit already.

It is not so much about your exertions or achievements on field in IPL/T20 which affects the players, but the unquantifiables—mindset, technique etc. I beg to differ with SG here.

I think it is the constant travel, living out of the suitcase .. that can really tire one out.

(Trust me, I know how draining that can be)

So that's the secret of your slim figure?  ;D  Also, why doesn't SG feel drained? He seems to be saying that it doesn't have much affect on him. I don't want to divert the conversation but just curious why SG feels differently.

SG can not speak from any experience since he did not play Test Cricket,WC and IPL within a few months of span.

IPL does effect Batting and Bowling, probably not fielding. But if you are on the bench all the time it probably does not have much impact apart from travelling and partying.

How many of England's players played in IPL? None except Eoin Morgan. No wonder they are batting and bowling so well.

Someone who has put himself up for sale in the IPL bazaar can hardly be considered a neutral party in the matter.

;D You saying if ENG players were good enough to be picked by IPL teams, they would still refuse? Did Flintoff, Pieterson, Collingwood, Broad, Morgan, Shah, Lumb, Mascarenhas refuse IPL contracts?

The thing is that most ENG players are not good enough to be bought by IPL teams. Those who are, are offered contracts and lap them up ASAP. Same goes for players of other countries too.

Go and watch our videos: Ganguly tells Fletcher

Mumbai: Sourav Ganguly is known to be straightforward about his views and it wasn’t any different on Tuesday when he spoke his heart out in a free-wheeling chat with MiD DAY.

Excerpts:

Do you expect India’s batsmen to struggle at The Oval too?

I definitely hope not! The Oval wicket is usually very good for the batsmen, and I expect them to continue playing like that. I am sure there will not be the same swing and seam movement like at Lord’s, Nottingham and Birmingham. But, whatever the case, India have to score a minimum of 400 runs. That should be the first step for revival.

What has gone wrong with this batting line-up?

I don’t think it’s that bad a team that cannot bat for even 60 overs. It’s a pity that we have not even scored 300 runs in any of the last six innings. When you look at the experience and the amount of career runs in this side, that’s what hurts the most. First and foremost, our batsmen have to consolidate our position by staying at the wicket. Play for pride.

Is this the best English attack you have seen?

It’s definitely right up there. But I have not seen an English attack so organised and consistent. They are strong lads with good intent.

What’s your take on Fletcher saying that he has never seen so much swing and seam in his life?

I don’t buy the idea that Fletcher did not see such ferocious swing bowling in his life. We won at Nottingham (in 2007), and at Leeds (in 2002), and on both occasions, the ball swung like anything. We should send him video cassettes of those victories.

Why have our bowlers looked so ordinary (when compared to England’s)?

I think the absence of Zaheer and Harbhajan has really hurt us. They are our two frontline bowlers. Naturally, their absence will be felt. The others could not rise to the occasion. It is also true when you don’t have enough runs on the board, the bowlers do struggle. If our batsmen had piled on the runs, we would have seen a different Ishant Sharma or Sreesanth. It’s a team game, and requires efforts from all departments.

What is the spark that is needed to turn things around?

If India have to win The Oval Test, they need a solid opening partnership. If Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir can fire at the top of the order, the others will suddenly feel better about their batting. Sometimes that’s all it takes ? one blazing century by Viru (Sehwag), and suddenly things will change.

How do you compare this loss to the whitewash against Australia (in 1999)?

That Australian team was a much better side than this English team. The likes of Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne were at their peak, and we were absolutely drubbed (in 1999). This time around, the score line reads 0-3 but it’s not been as bad as 1999. That will surely be the more forgettable of the two tours.

Nice. If that 50p and glass were placed at deep long leg, Sreesanth will win hands-down.

I know the new ball is not far away. It's just 11 overs old.

This said in 70th over of IND bowling.

Bell is batting exquisitely............but KP seems to be a bit loose...all those walking across the stumps do not look great, not to mention the chances that he is giving the opposition team.
Poor Indian bowling...poor field-placements...........overall sagging Indian morale...is helping KP score the way he is.....

Wonderful :

indication of India’s haphazard attitude to this series was revealed by Sanjay Manjrekar on Sky. He explained how RP Singh had flown in from Miami to play in this Test. What he was doing there did not emerge but he certainly wasn’t netting.

He was in Miami, hoping to be called in as a replacement during the WI tour. No one told him it was over.

And Laxman sent to face the music against a swinging ball. Even in a dead rubber test, SRT won't budge from the peacock throne of #4.

I don't see our batting going anywhere from here....Sehwag was our one and only hope.
After him...it is just routine( with due respects to SRT) :(.........................Dravid's possible century notwithstanding.

I find Gambhir not opening puzzling. The scan could have been done earlier today, the injury was yesterday.

The usual formula: Laxman gone.
