The ICC also announced the fans' Greatest Test team of all-time, based on 250,000 votes cast on the ICC website, to mark the cricket's 2000th Test which will be played between England and India on July 21. The team included four Indians and some notable absentees like Garfield Sobers and Malcolm Marshall.

People's Dream XI: Virender Sehwag, Sunil Gavaskar, Donald Bradman, Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara, Kapil Dev, Adam Gilchrist (wk), Shane Warne, Wasim Akram, Curtly Ambrose, Glenn McGrath.

Kapil over Sobers and Viru ahead of others on the list?? Lots of Indians voting among the 250K ;D

No Sobers is insane!

Also can't believe Marshall was left out.

As opposed to which country? Too bad that the majority of poll participants is Indian, but if a majority were say British, you would see equally ridiculous nominations.

Alec Stewart calls Greatest Team a joke
Former England captain Alec Stewart has ridiculed the ICC's ‘Greatest Test team of all time' — chosen through online polling — as a “joke” for leaving out greats such as Gary Sobers and Malcolm Marshall.

The legendary Sir Donald Bradman was the only pre-1970s player in the team which was picked after polling to commemorate the 2000th Test Match, which will begin at Lord's between India and England on Thursday.

Four Australians, four Indians, two West Indians and one Pakistani made the list but none of the fearsome quartet of West Indian fast bowlers of the 1970 and 1980s — Michael Holding, Malcolm Marshall, Joel Garner and Colin Croft — were picked.

Englishmen also failed to make the cut and Stewart said the chosen team is nothing more than a joke.

“What a joke team,” Stewart said on Twitter.

“No Viv Richards, Gary Sobers, Malcolm Marshall to name but three.”

The team was chosen by more than 250,000 public votes on ICC's website and CEO Haroon Lorgat conceded that the demographic of the electorate played a huge role in the omission of some great names.

“Selecting from such greats is no easy job, and not surprisingly, the selection mainly reflects modern players seen by present day supporters. There are many greats from the past who would have easily merited selection in this team,” he said.

ICC's Greatest Team is fundamentally flawed: Boycott
PTI | Jul 20, 2011, 03.46pm IST

The greatest team of all time? You must be joking, Boycott said.
LONDON: A day after former England captain Alec Stewart ridiculed the ICC's 'Greatest Test team of all time', former opener and now noted commentator Geoffrey Boycott said the selection of the team is fundamentally flawed.

"ICC's best-ever Test team is fundamentally flawed and pays scant regard to the great players of the past," wrote the former England captain.

"The greatest team of all time? You must be joking. It is so biased it has no credibility. It takes no account of the history of the game and the great players of the past. It insults their records and achievements," Boycott added.

Flaying the idea behind the selection, the veteran Test cricketer said the choice has no understanding or knowledge of players from past generations.

The former batsman alleged that the selection was biased with most of the votes coming from the subcontinent.

"It has no understanding or knowledge of players from past generations. I bet the vast majority of the votes cast on the International Cricket Council's website were from fans on the subcontinent," Boycott mentioned in his column for Daily Telegraph.

Five of the eleven players featuring in the select team are from India and Pakistan which includes the likes Sachin Tendulkar, Sunil Gavaskar, Virender Sehwag, Kapil Dev and Wasim Akram.

"Apart for Donald Bradman, whose record is twice as good as most batsmen in the history, the rest are all players the current generation have seen play live. Just because you are dead doesn't mean your record should be forgotten," Boycott said.

Emphasising on the likes of West Indian great George Headly and Englishman Jack Hobbs apart from Malcom Marshall and Australian Dennis Lillee, the former cricketer said the final eleven highlights the ignorance of the voter.

"More than 250,000 fans took part to select 11 great players. But to dismiss the best from the past shows the voters' ignorance.

"Tell me, who can leave Malcolm Marshall and Dennis Lillee out of their team?" the former captain questioned.

It is not just the answer but the question that is fundamentally flawed. While I agree that the result reflects the demographics of the voters, does there exist a demographic that can actually address the question honestly? Sure, there are people who are more qualified than others (a reason why I never participate in these polls, as I would be far less qualified than most on this site), but even among the knowledgeable, how many confident are people of their judgement given the subset of players that they have seen themselves?
