My, oh my-- the murgi position (well, not quite-- I would have to put the arms through my legs and hold my ears)-- brings back childhood memories of my shaitani!

i would rather be let off after doing uthak baithak then go to a popo station. i agree cops are idiots attinmes but in vadodara i would rather see htis than them shooting at violators of the curfew.

Just that our cops are so in search of someone to boss around to prove their power.

Boss around innocent folks (some maybe goofy innocent folks, but still...)
They will leave the hardened criminals to escape!

it is easy to ridicule them but have you ever thought of this:
1. that the mumbai police are in the top 5 as far as gathering intelligence goes?
2. that despite ass licking 1000 politicins at a ime to keep their jobs they actually manage to do their job
3. that despite working 12/14 hour days they still show up and dont revolt?
4. that they have to balance the whims and fancies of several people and still work?
5. that with an inspector getting paid 16000 rs a month there isnt absolute corruption as opposed to rampant corruption?
it is easy to sit back and say" oh look those bastards are just bullying the innocents" why on earth would this idiot be out on the streets in a curfew unless his mom was dying or he needed a fire engine? if that was thwe case i doubt this would have been the outcome. i hate policemen as much as the next guy. its just that i do respect them for what they do as well. i am not saying my respect is unconditional. there are some donkeys who are cops but in general my experience tells me that not all cops can be tarred with the same brush.
ok my venting is complete. thats what you get fineleg when i come to work after hetting fined for breaking the law!!

fineleg, what kslice siad is generally true. Mumbai Police have an excellent record. I dont know about other state police. In Kerala, unlike what I have seen in neighbouring Karnataka and TN, police are extremely bossy. There are fixed rates, for eg, for being relieved of a traffic ticket. Try negotiating the rate, like you would in Bangalore and I am sure you will end up in jail. But recently, policemen are seen to be much more courteous. They are well mannered and are generally made aware that they are there to protect and not harass us. In fact, some model police stations are setup which show the rest how to conduct their daily affairs.
IMO, this is due to the increased education among officers. Most officers are graduates and there are even post graduates. Secondly, even though the British Raj was never hugely influential in Kerala, the hangover from the police state existed which meant people were extremely scared of policemen. There is a growing trend among youngsters to respect but not fear their authority today.
Of course, I dont agree with the kind of punishments you see above but this was a curfew. I agree with k-slice. Although this is not a legal way of maintaining order, I would take this humiliation any day rather than having my life severely affected for a few days after being slapped with a bigger punishment. Wouldnt you?

When intelligence matures and lodges securely in the mind it becomes wisdom. When wisdom is integrated with life and becomes action it becomes Bhakti. Knowledge when it becomes fully mature is Bhakti. To believe that Jnana and Bhakti, knowledge & devotion, are different from each other is ignorance.
