Instead, why can't the off, middle, middle and leg, and leg stump guards be marked off on the crease by the umpires and the ground staff before the match starts?
Then each incoming batsman just has to choose which of these 4 lines he wants to take guard to...
The batsmen waste so much time taking guard, scraping the guard with their bat, digging with a bail, putting the bail back...all time which could be used for some cricket!!
Or am I missing something?

I never took guard from umpires anytime.
But I think, it was a practice that got started by someone and followed subsequently by others. Look how some West Indians mark their crease like Chandrapaul does......it's like a fad.
Yes, umpire stands in an appropriate position to guide you alright, if you need.
Better ask the umpire rather than the opposition players! :D

Simpler to ask your team mate right?

Yes......actually in those days( school/ college days), even the team-mates were not that reliable...........sometimes a team-mate would be the umpire himself......very eager to see me out...so that he can bat! :D
Personally, I never bothered about taking guard..............just stand and deliver :)

True, anyone can give a guard but the point I was trying to make was, why do it again and again for every new batsman at the crease??
Mark the lines out on the crease at both ends with a paintbrush before the match and ask the batsman coming in to choose any of those ready made lines as per his preference.
The stumps are not likely to shift position the entire duration of the match and so why not make the lines permanent?

It doesn't matter where the stumps are. It matters where the umpire thinks they are.

Likewise Blwe. I just drew an imaginary line from middle leg and assumed where it would be on the crease. one thing i did do that pissed off other teams, and quite often my own, was to count the fielders before every ball. It was more often than not just a quick count but if the bowler was doing well i took longer just to piss him off!! i dont know where i picked it up but i think it was when i was 10 and playing my first serious club game. some player i watched used to do it and i copied him

you must have learnt it from me :)

actually the question is a good one. I have often wondered why not just draw those lines. We actually do that in our team. One of the batsmen draws the middle and leg guards (no one takes an off stump guard) and others follow that. We still take guard (or most do) just out of habit but the marks made .... are used for the entire game
