The release of the al-Zarqawi video raises the issue of how other al-Qaida leaders move around and where they reside.

Osama Bin Laden is believed to be staying put, rather than moving constantly. The belief is that he spends his time in one location and not with an entourage that would attract attention. His security is provided mainly by Uzbek and Chechen fighters who form rings of protection.

Ayman al-Zawahiri, on the other hand, does move — mostly in Pakistan. He and Bin Laden have not traveled together since mid-2003 for security reasons.

The top officials move mainly on foot and on motorcycles, even mopeds, rather than convoys of vehicles which can attract attention and show up on radars.

Missile attack on Afghanistan
In a surprise move, American cruise missiles pounded sites in Afghanistan early Thursday morning. A spokesman for the US Navy said the U.S. attacks were in the Torah Borah region, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) west of Jalalabad. The attack was conducted based on tips that Osama Bin Laden, the mastermind of the September 11 attacks had to move into the urban areas for his routine dialysis treatement. Unfortunately, US ground forces, who quickly converged in the area could not apprehend Laden.
But the operation was not an entire failure and soldiers got one of Laden's shoes and a pack of Rothmans cigarettes that Laden must have left behind in his hurry to flee. Brig. Gen. Charles H. Jacoby said that secret operations are underway to catch a tall bearded person wearing one shoe and having a cigarette lighter but no cigarettes on him. For strategic reasons, authorities will not disclose whether they were in possession of Laden's left or right shoe.
