Six arrested for betting on cricket, races

Mumbai, May 1: The Crime Branch of the Mumbai Police on Saturday arrested six people for allegedly running a betting racket in horse-racing and cricket. The police said they received information about a racket operating out of a Worli flat.

A team raided the spot on Saturday and nabbed Bharat Chouksey alias Bharat Mahajan (50), believed to be the kingpin of the racket, and alleged accomplices Mahendra Patil (52), Manoj Shah (40), Ojas Patel (22), Sushil Kalambe (21) and Sneha Sakharkar (34).

The police also seized a computer, a laptop, 11 cellphones and a code book from the apartment. According to the police, the group was involved mainly in horse-race betting at the Mahalaxmi racecourse, and cricket betting.

‘‘We believe they may have also been betting on the ongoing cricket match,’’ said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Detection) Dhananjay Kamalakar.

According to the police, Chouksey is well known in betting circles. ‘‘They probably have bookies all over the country,’’ said Senior Police Inspector Dilip Patil of the Crime Intelligence Unit.

All six accused have been booked for forgery and cheating under the Indian Penal Code, read with the Gambling Act and the Indian Telegraph Act.
Presented before the holiday court on Sunday, they have been remanded to police custody till May 4.

‘‘There are no written documents. They keep records in code,’’ said Patil. ‘‘We are trying to find out how long they’ve been running this racket.’’
