Sri Lanka Cricket on sticky wicket with BCCI

Sri Lankan sports ministry's decision to call back its cricketers from the ongoing IPL could lead to "a potentially explosive situation" as far as the board's ties with the Board of Control for Cricket in India [ Images ] – world cricket's financial powerhouse -- is concerned, a leading newspaper in Colombo said.

The ministry had on Tuesday asked Sri Lankan cricketers participating in the hugely popular Twenty20 [ Images ] league to return home early to prepare for the national team's tour of England [ Images ] that gets underway on May 14.

"The latest development is almost certain to create a tense situation in Sri Lanka's [ Images ] ties with world cricket's financial powerhouse, the BCCI, which more or less dictates terms to the ICC [ Images ] and world cricket as a whole," the Daily Mirror opined on Wednesday.

The newspaper further said the decision was taken after sports minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage's criticism of India's alleged shabby treatment of Sri Lankan politicians at the World Cup final in Mumbai [ Images ].

In line with Aluthgamage's policy of 'country before IPL', the ministry said a circular would soon be released by the minister that will make national duty mandatory for all Sri Lankan sportsmen above any other commitments.

Ten Sri Lankan cricketers are contracted to various franchises, of which two of them are being led by Kumar Sangakkara [ Images ] and Mahela Jayawardene [ Images ], the islanders' two senior most players.

Besides Deccan Chargers [ Images ] skipper Sangakkara and Kochi Tuskers Kerala [ Images ] captain Jayawardene, Suraj Randiv [ Images ], Nuwan Kulasekara [ Images ], Muttiah Muralitharan [ Images ], Thisara Perera, Lasith Malinga [ Images ], Dilhara Fernando, Tilakaratne Dilshan and Nuwan Pradeep are some of the Sri Lankan players involved in the fourth season of the IPL.

"On a recommendation made by the national selection committee I have instructed the secretary of the board to inform the players to return by at least the 5th of May to prepare for the tour," Aluthgamage had said.

"When contracted players of Sri Lanka Cricket represent other tournaments, they should make sure that their priority lies with the national team and this will be strictly adhered to in the future," Aluthgamage had added.

Sangakkara, Jayawardene, Malinga, Dilshan and Kulasekera look certain to be picked for the tour of England. The Sri Lankans are scheduled to leave for the tour on May 10.

The move by the Sri Lankan government is in complete contrast to the one that was taken three years ago when it cancelled a tour of England in 2009 to allow the players participate in the T20 league.

they can enjoy nice English summer for a few extra days.

i dont know why this idiot minister is making such a hue and cry over it. SL have an England tour starting on May 14th - so obviously they will go for it. this was known beforehand. whether they leave India on May 5th or 8th or whatever matters little.

it will be a boon if this results in less bilateral cricket between the two teams!

The guys anyway would have been around for a month of IPL which is quite a while - Kochi and Deccan will just have to work out interim captains.

Why do we invite foreign 'dignitaries' to matches as a fkng form of diplomacy. SOBs - invite them to your house and put a big screen up. the lankie c*nts have the gall(e) to feel spurned by poor treatment too after that.

people outside the stadium were paying 1.5 lakhs cash for a ticket...

Guys like Dalmiya/Speed actually believe in something (rightly or wrongly) and have a love for cricket whereas Pawar/Lorgat are genuinely dishonest people who could care less if cricket were to be replaced by gully-danda as long as they came out on top with power and money.

Absolutely right!  Like it or not, Dalmiya played cricket himself and all throughout his life, he had been involved in cricket administration starting with local clubs.  He made significant positive contributions.  Unfortunately, we as a community are selfish enough to be always more driven by personal hatred than by what is right overall.  Forget his BCCI cronies, there were significant support from lot of people for Pawar.

i agree you gotta play at your biggest stadiums

however whether you have a 35000 capacity or 75000 capacity in india doesnt really make a difference. tickets will still sell for 1 lakh.

and the din and the atmosphere really is a function of acoustics. bangalore had it. mohali didnt. and it doesnt seem like the new eden does.

they call it the 'bullring' in SA for a reason
