Injured Australians on target for WC.
« on: April 28, 2006, 06:49:24 AM »
SYDNEY, April 26: Injured Australian soccer players Harry Kewell, Mark Viduka and Mark Schwarzer are on target to play in Australia's World Cup opener against Japan on June 12.

"There's nothing there at the moment that would indicate they are in danger for the World Cup," Football Federation Australia chief executive John O'Neill said Wednesday. "I think our stars are all going to be in good shape."

O'Neill was also confident that Tim Cahill would be fit for the World Cup. However, he spoke before Cahill's English Premier League club, Everton, said the midfielder had sustained ligament damage in his left knee and would be sidelined for up to six weeks.

"As regards to the World Cup, he will obviously be a big doubt and will be receiving intensive physiotherapy," Everton physio Mick Rathbone said.

Middlesbrough's Schwarzer had surgery Tuesday on a fractured cheekbone and is likely to be playing within two weeks, O'Neill said. He said the goalkeeper, whose penalty saves helped Australia beat Uruguay in World Cup qualifying in November, was expected to be fit for Australia's warm-up match against Greece on May 25.

O'Neill described injuries to Liverpool's Kewell (groin) and Middlesbrough's Viduka (thigh) as "quite mild."

"Precautions are being taken, but there's nothing earth-shattering there," he said.

I think they're clearly missing a bio-mechanist-something.
