Point Standing Discussions
« on: March 06, 2011, 05:27:19 PM »
Group A.
This should be relatively straightforward. The only real question is going to be whether Pakistan finish 1st or Australia.
This should end up looking like:
Australia
Pakistan
Sri Lanka
New Zealand
---------

Group B.
This one is much trickier. With a game against Netherlands coming up, India should comfortably become #1 in the group. The only way South Africa could pip them would be outright beat India, in which case they would finish with 1 loss and 6 wins. India would finish 2nd with 1 loss, 1 tie, 4 wins. England will most likely also have 1 loss, 1 tie, 4 wins but India should finish 2nd on account of a healtheir run-rate already with one minnow to go.

This leaves the 4th spot wide open for the West Indies, Ireland, and Bangladesh.

Bangladesh are pretty much out. They will have to beat England and Netherlands to qualify. I don't see them beating England.
West Indies' realistic chance to go through would be beating Ireland as I don't see them beating England or India with their bowling attack.
Ireland has to beat Netherlands and West Indies (South Africa should ahve no problem dispatching them)

Key Games left:
South Africa vs. India
West Indies vs. Ireland
Pakistan vs. Australia

Of somewhat secondary interest might be the following:
England vs. Bangladesh
West Indies vs. England
New Zealand vs. Sri Lanka

and for those who really like cricket...kenya vs. canada will help decide #6 and #7 in group A.

I cannot believe that ICC didn't schedule two games tomorrow!

So you assume that India vs West Indies will be a cake walk? It reminds me of WC 2007 where, if I recollect, you skipped watching the India-Bangladesh match asking what was the point  ;D

With the way India are playing, it is best to pray.

The way the tournament has been setup, I don't see a scenario where India wouldn't go through to the QFs! In fact, it might be better for India to finish 3rd or 4th and play in India...so our lead spinner Yuvraj can spin the ball!

Agreed on QF qualification, but I wouldn't assume position 1 or 2.

Don't you just know that India will play Pakistan in the QF!

Not at all.

The only way we play the QF in Ahmedabad is if we finish 3rd in the group (and we will play the second team from the other group).

The only way we play the SF in Mohali is if we finish 3rd in the group (in which case we play in Ahmedabad as mentioned above) or if we finish second in the group, and win the QF in Mirpur against the third place team in the other group.

DD is right - ICC issued a notice few days ago that the home team will play at home for QF and SF unless 2 hosts clash with each other - then the host will decided by who is seeded higher, pts etc. So, India will play QF in Ahmedabad and SF in Mohali unless we play SL and they finish on higher points, in which case, we play QF and SF in Premadasa. And SL will play their QF and SF in Srilanka unless they play India and India is seeded higher.

No, it was in all leading news websites 2 weeks ago. Here is one such link, I just googled for it.

http://www.rediff.com/cricket/report/world-cup-2011-hosts-to-play-quarter-final-matches-at-home-icc/20110218.htm

Hosts India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will play their knock-out matches at home if they advance to the quarter-final stage of the World Cup, International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive Haroon Lorgat said on Friday.

Lorgat also said that if two host nations face each other, the side placed higher in the pre-tournament seeding will get preference, which means India will play all its knock-out ties on home soil if they get past the preliminary stage.

"I can confirm that the three host countries will play the knock-out rounds on their own grounds," Lorgat said ahead of Saturday's tournament opener between India and Bangladesh in Mirpur.

ICC's decision means the original schedule, according to which the specific World Cup quarterfinal matches were marked, will be changed depending on where the hosts finish.

As per the schedule, the quarter-final matches are as follow: A1 v B4 (Mirpur), A2 v B3 (Ahmedabad [ Images ]), A3 v B2 (Mirpur) and A4 v B1 (Colombo).

But now, as per the decision, India will play its quarter-final match in Ahmedabad, irrespective of where they finish in Group B. The March 24 quarter-final at the Gujarat city is between third-placed team in group B and the second team in group A.

So if India finish second, they will take on the third-placed team from group A. But even if Mahendra Singh Dhoni's men do not finish third in group B, they will still play in Ahmedabad against a side which will not know their venue till the last league match ends on March 20.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, will play their final eight match in Colombo on March 26, unless they face India. In such a scenario India will get pre-tournament seeding preference and will play in Ahmedabad.

Similarly, Bangladesh will play their quarter-final match at Dhaka on either March 23 or March 25 -- first if they qualify, and secondly if they are not drawn up against either India or Sri Lanka.

ICC's host country rule will also hold good for the semi-finals clashes in Colombo and Mohali on March 29 and 30 respectively.
