Losing first games to SA, PAK
« on: April 22, 2006, 02:57:34 PM »
Does it mean anything? Is it an extrapolation based on small sample size?

Since most of the teams you play only once in WC, you neeed to win the first encounter. There is no second chance.

But we have lost 3 in this department in the last few months of our "superb" ODI performance.

2 against Pakistan, and one against SA (@home)

THe one thing common to all 3 is that we batted first. We are not as invincible batting first as we are second. That is something to work upon.

but, batting second ( even considering that to be our strength) is not within India's choice!

good observation, but by itself - losing 1st games- too far removed from the conclusion . If I remember right, Aus started rather slow in the 99 WC, only to whip Pak by the final.

I think the imp things to watch out for is system issues, one of which Gourav pointed out -- we losing games when we bat first. Such things could bcome mental blocks if not real stumblings. Or if can't win on a certain type of pitch, or w/o a certain player playing for us, etc.
Lets hope the batting first thing improves in time.

I agree that we have won a bigger percentage of these games chasing, but a truer picture is when we exclude those games where we lost the toss and were made to chase becuase surely those were matches/conditions which oppositions considered advantageous for batting first?
