Any interesting books you have read recently or in the past that stand out and you would like to recommend?
These could be CRICKET related books or non-cricket books (such as Management, self help, technology, biographies, autobiographies, finance - how to make money, novels and stories, sci-fi, any reasonably interesting topics).

Just thought this thread can be used as a bibliography collection in general.
I know most of us may not have much time to read (what with all the cricket!), but thats why its recently read or even in the past - (this is like the movies thread, will be like a collection list).

I recently read, the Six Thinking Hats book (Bono) - interesting read for those interested.

Among the newer writers--Zadie Smith is quite good. Check out "White Teeth".

And of course, to be a real cricket man, you have to read some CLR James.

Yeah....was just kidding.

I don't think most of us, from here, cant know enough about the *person* in these cricketers to judge what they would really dig. Unless they specifically spell it out in interviews etc...like Rahul has often done.

Tom Clancy is an author I have read and liked some of his books like Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games...
I also like Arthur Hailey which I know some like and some don't.
Jeffrey Archer is another favorite.

Well, if you want to read non-commercial non-Clancy stuff, let me recommend Tim O' Brien's "Things They Carried." Tim O' Brien, of course, is one of the greatest contemporary American writers.

Try reading sue grafton she is pretty good for light reading. also read d.w. bufa he writes legal based fiction and it has a lot of depth as it deals with philosophy a lot.....he talks about plato , aristotle and other western philosophers
try him he is real good....sahir should try it as it deals with american criminal law in a good depth and this guy is a phed in law

Here's a non big name (in International circles, at least) and a wonderful author (who has lived most of her life in AZ) that I would recommend .. JA Jance. Google her.

More on her at http://www.jajance.com/  .. for some odd reason the website loads slowly..so be patient.

I read her book "Partner in Crime" on one of my flights from US to India..and I can tell you it is the best page-turner I have read after Scott Turow's "Presumed Innocent". Besides the story and characters..you will learn a lot about life in rural deserts of AZ.

Enjoy..as this book is in paperback...so not that expensive.

The last good story I read was Michael Crichton's  'Timeline'.
His book on the Environmental terrorism, "State of Fear" was also very good.
My all time favorite remains Jerome K Jerome for his "Three men in a boat". I have read a couple of other books by the same author.

Yes, he was the vet himself. The books were like his memoirs.
Great description of life and times in the Yorkshire dales!

BTW, if one is into animal stories, there is none greater than Gerald Durrell. Try Fillets of plaice, My family and other animals, Catch me a colobus, Three tickets to adventure etc. Together with his wife Leslie, he has written altogether around 70 books, all of them hilarious and yet informative and full of a naivette that cuts across cultures. And moreover, his humour is not tainted by Protestant prudery, as in the case of Herriot.

His elder brother incidentally is the author of the celebrated Alexandria Quartet, Lawrence Durrell.
