Argentina thrash Spain 4-1 thanks to Lionel Messi masterclass

Spain struggle to live with their south American opponents at Estadio Monumental in this friendly

What an amazing game between Argentina and Spain on Tuesday night, with La Albiceleste running riot and beating their opponents by a 4-1 scoreline.

Many supporters will wonder what might have happened at the 2010 World Cup if Sergio Batista had been in charge instead of Diego Maradona, with Argentina playing some excellent football which saw them race into a 3-0 first half lead.

Lionel Messi opened the scoring in the 10th minute, with Gonzalo Higuain doubling the lead in the 15th minute as the Buenos Aires crowd went wild in the stadium.

It was to get better in the 34th minute when Carlos Tevez scored past Liverpool’s Pepe Reina and Spain were struggling to make headway against a spirited home side.

The World champions looked stronger in the second half, with Fernando Llorente holding the ball up well and the Athletic striker grabbed a consolation goal, only for Kun Aguero to put some gloss on the scoreline.

Wonder, when Spain play Lat Am opponents for the first time in Lat Am in may be 40 years, their loss is due to jet lag. But when Brazil/Argentina play EU opponents in Europe, whether now, when they have many EU based players, or earlier, when they didn't — jet lag never came into the equation.

Try again buddy!

Bah!

I like Argentina way better than Spain ... so this is not the issue. But really, this does not count. A) things need to be done on the real stage and B) Spain does not seem to be playing even a full strength team.

It was a shame, the way the 'world's best' team was hammered by a rookie Germany, 4-1, in the big stage. :glasses3:

A full-strength Argentina lost to Japan by a solitary goal at Saitama.
