Actually it is funny.

When he was playing for the Kings XI Punjab this year he was dropped for a match owing to mediocre performances in prior games as a middle order batsman.  However on the morning of that match Shaun Marsh was injured and as a replacement they drafted back Mahela who was originally dropped.  Not only that he was asked to open because Marsh was a an opener.  Not only did he open but he got a century and won the game for Kings XI versus KKR in that game. After that dream game he continued to open and have not looked back since.

So it was by chance that Mahela has resurrected his 20-20 career as an opener than by design.  One wonders how little things make a huge difference in a game like cricket. In this case a freak injury has literally launched a veterans 20-20 career as if that really means much.

He is one of the top 5 Test Batsmen in the world today, along with SRT,RD,RP and JK. He is proving - like Kallis and SRT in IPL - that you can indeed play orthodox cricket shots and score runs in T20.

Please let us not go overboard over Mahela and call him a great Test bastman.

I like the guy.  Just like Mohammed Yousuf he will never be considered a great Test bastman by the likes of me.  Against the two bowling attacks of their times namely Australia and SA these guys (Mahela and Yousuf) were really medicore. Mahela beyond the Sub-continental tracks has never proved his worth to be considered a consensus great bastman.

Mahela in Tests versus England, WI, NZ, SA, Aus away from home.

                     T       I      Runs      HS        Avg            50+scores
                  24      45     1587     141       36.06         8 (5 100's)

As I said I do not consider him a great Test bat.

The below three who I consider the best playing abroad of the current crop from the Sub-continent and how they did in Eng, Aus, SA, NZ, WI Tests playing away from home.

                    T       I      Runs      HS        Avg            50+scores
VVS           43      74     3080     178       47.38         25(7 100's)
RD             50      91     4417     233       55.91         35(9 100's)
SRT            62     106    5121    241*     52.25          40(16 100's)

All Mahela, Inzy, Sanga, Yousuf, VS have inferior numbers to the above three.
