Ganguly interview in ABP
« on: April 14, 2010, 11:00:46 PM »
http://www.anandabazar.com/15khela1.htm

Excerpts (translation mine). kban/CLR/Blwe feel free to add the parts I skipped due to time limitations.

Q: Where does the buck stop? Who will take the responsibility for the KKR losses?
A: We have to take responsibility. The captain has to take responsibility. The team has to take responsibility. As the captain, I have to especially shoulder the responsibility. If we get praised when we win, we have to accept criticism when we lose.

Q: SRK said (on tweeter) all the blame is his.
A. No no, why should he take the blame. We played, not him. We are taking responsibility.

Q: Are you afraid that brand SG is getting tarmished due to these losses?
A: Sports is not about polishing trophies. Sports is life. Real life. Where there is dust, there are races, there is sweat and grime. And where there are wins. One has to adapt to both.

If you think you will only win trophies, you will not achieve it. One has to keep trying. Sometimes you will be bloodied. Other times you will win. I am the same. I keep trying. Maybe I will not succeed this time. Perhaps tomorrow I will be successful.

Q: But the KKR supporters are impatient. They waited 3 years. You are not even going to the semis?

A: The first year our team was not good. You know what happened the last year - I do not want to say anything more. This time we prepared well.  The team was good, we trained enough. The atmosphere was good. The bench was good. I never imagined we would fail. But this is life. One does not always get what one wants.

Q: In away matches KKR are 1-6. Lost all except Mohali. Explanations?
A: We did not score enough runs.

Q: Was it a psychological issue?
A: We failed. We lost the crucial matches badly. One has to win these to make progress in the tournament.

Q. In the past batsman SG sometimes bailed out captain SG. Why is that not happening?
A: As I said, we lost key matches.

..........

Q: Are you thinking about your image/legacy?
A: What image? Is sports about image design? Sports teaches you not to obsess about failures. Everytime you enter the field, you leave your failures behind
and start afresh. I think all successful people do this.

........................

Q: Did you not make strategic mistakes? Like leaving Mendis out on a dry track?
A: We wanted an extra bat -- that helped; Angelo scored runs. I thought Gayle and Hussey could
fill in as spinners

Q: Still, why did you get only 139?
A: Wickets fell very fast. My LBW proved vital.
........................

Q: So what next?
A: Let's see. I really feel terrible for SRK.

From the tone - to the extent you have captured this in the translation - he seems to have resigned to the fact that they will not make the semis.

That seems to be true. Whatmore said that the next two matches are to recover some prestige or something to that effect.

It is very clear to me that they will not make it, nor do they deserve to.

I thnk prfsr posted the excerpts --there are other sections which provide some insight into his thinking --its a fighting mindset, even if he is perhaps mostly resigned to not making the semis this year.

Assuming one has to get to +ve NRR territory to qualify after getting to 14 points, if they bat first and score 150-175 runs, by my rough calculations..they will need to win matches by a margin of approx. 72 runs each.. or across both matches by 144 runs!

RR also appears  out ..as they will have to win their next game by 100 runs to get to +ve NRR.

It really is a fight between CSK, DD and DC for the final 2 spots..assuming even if BRC lsoe their last match they will not drop their NRR too much.

DC due to its NRR situation has to win both.. CSK and perhaps DD can still qualify with 1 win, if they dont let NRR slip too much.

If DD and KXIP beat both CSK and DC (not unimaginable), KKR can go thru just by winning both its matches. NRR will not be relevant.

Too early to rule them out completely although it is no longer entirely in their hands.

KKR Out? Nonsense! Even Kings XI Punjab Can Make Semis
Abhimanyu Radhakrishnan,  14 April 2010, 07:01 PM IST

While this is supposed to be a tech blog, I've sort of attempted to broaden the scope to all geeky pursuits including, with this post, cricket stats. I was always very good at the permutations and combinations part of mathematics in school because I always visualized problems using cricket tournament standings. So if I ever forgot the "formula" to calculate say "4C2", I would physically work out the number of matches in a 4 nation round robin tournament. Needless to say, like most Indians, being fond of math and having to support perpetually under performing teams, I'm at the forefront of "theoretical optimism".

Thus I'm quite flabbergasted that SRK has already begun apologising when KKR is very much in the reckoning for a semi-final spot especially with the MASSIVE advantage of playing the final game against a team that has already qualified. They will know the exact run-rate required if it comes down to that and they'll be up against a not-so-motivated Mumbai side who might just take it easy. Forget KKR, even the beleagured Kings XI Punjab are in with a theoretical chance of going through:

14 Apr RC beats RR

15 Apr DD must beat CSK

16 Apr KXIP must beat DC

17 Apr  RC beats MI ; KKR beats RR

18 Apr KXIP must beat CSK; DD must beat DC

19 Apr MI beats KKR

The alternate scenario is that if RR beat RC today, then RC needs to lose to MI on 17th as well, to stay stuck on 12 points and KKR has the option of losing either of its two remaining matches to also stay stuck at 12. In both scenarios you'll have MI, DD and either of RR/RC going through to the semis and the remainder FIVE teams stuck on 12 points.

After that its Net Run Rate and KXIP could well have the highest NRR though both DC and KKR will have an advantage of having their final match after KXIP. That's why it would have been fairer to have the last four matches played simultaneously as is done in the football world cup so that there is no plotting. But if it's between being fair and cashing in on 4x the audience, we all know which way the IPL swings!

From the tone - to the extent you have captured this in the translation - he seems to have resigned to the fact that they will not make the semis.
If Ganguly has any brains in him he better accept the truth and move on.  He did not lead well - nothing surprising there going by the way he did in the 1st IPL, he and his teammates never played as a unit (bowling and batting clicking in the same game), wrong team selection by Ganguly in most games.  So when you compare it to team that are led by better leaders of men - read Warne, Gilly, MSD etc they ofcourse would be expected to be in this position when the decision making is flawed and the methods questioned.  Individual brilliance and other teams debacles will get you some wins and that will even out for all teams but in well contested tight games the team that has better composed captains will come out on top on more occasions than not.

So now the position KKR are in is this - They need to win all their games and not only that they need to expect teams that are bettered positioned than them to wilt and not only that wilt and loose badly so that KKR can make it.  Now how practical and realistic is that.

obviously this is only excerpt but based on evidence, I think this is the best , positive interview from SG atleast as far as I know/read/seen.

None of his usual sulking, reference to 10k runs etc. As a true sportman, he is taking it on the chin and I am really happy to see him talk about the nature of sports, how one is bloodied and gets up and goes to his next battle. Kudos to SG, attitude seems to be in right place. If he carries this attitude onto the field and also into the on field captaincy, KKR can still progress.  ::cheers::

Lol , was not he the one  who chose players in the auction or atleast part of the selection process . I remember him proudly saying that he got almost all the players he wanted . Suddenly , fter 3 years he realises it was a bad team . Usual Ganguly rants , blaming everyone other then himself.
