A win for RCB will practically eliminate DC and almost assure RCB of a SF slot.

A win for DC will bunch all teams up even closer to each other.

Which way will we go?

A loss here will put a serious dent into the Defending Champions(DC) chances to make it to the SF.  They have to have this game.  No two ways about it.

If they lose this, DC gets eliminated. It already has the poorest NRR among the contenders ..difficult to see that being made up over the next 2 matches.

From an MI perspective, I want DC eliminated.

While every team is a threat in a one off match (which are what the SF and Final are), I dont want us to run into Gilly or Jayasuriya in a big knock out match. Too many bad memories. We already have Jayasuriya on our side ...so, the sooner Gilly goes out, the better.

After that, KKR and DD are the other teams I would want out. Gayle+McCullum can leave the contest meaningless in an hour of batting and DD has too many match winners.

CSK, RR & RCB are still manageable. We may end up losing to one of them but the probability that one player will just take it away is far lower in these sides.

Inconsistent Manish Pandey

The success of Bangalore’s top order has been one of the key reasons for their good performance this season, but while Jacques Kallis has been amazingly consistent, Manish Pandey, his opening partner in most matches, has struggled every time Bangalore have batted first. Here’s a comparison of the two openers when Bangalore have batted first and when they have chased:
Kallis and Pandey batting first      Runs    Balls    Dismissals    Average    Runs per over
Jacques Kallis    204    162    3    68.00    7.55
Manish Pandey    26    48    4    6.50    3.25
Kallis and Pandey batting second      Runs    Balls    Dismissals    Average    Runs per over
Jacques Kallis    297    236    4    74.25    7.55
Manish Pandey    188    137    4    47.00    8.23
Interesting statistics.. Is that why Pandey is not playing ? I guess another reason is that someone like S.Sriram can bowl an over or two economically in the middle.

Can BRC find a spot for Kallis ? If it is a slow dust bowl, my choice is to play Appanna as second bowler, Pandey as opener and KP in for Steyn.

http://blogs.cricinfo.com/iplwatcher/archives/2010/04/inconsistent_manish_pandey.php

On the four occasions when Bangalore have batted first, Pandey has made 0 (7 balls), 20 (28 balls), 5 (7 balls) and 1 (6 balls). Batting second, Pandey has been the epitome of consistency, with a lowest score of 29 and a highest of 42 in five innings. It speaks highly of his ability to handle the pressures of a chase, but it also suggests he's a little lost when he doesn't have a target in front of him. Kallis, on the other hand, has exactly the same strike rate when batting first and second - you can't get more consistent than that!

Bangalore’s starts have been a major reason why they’ve been so successful chasing – five of their six wins have come batting second. For their opponents, putting Bangalore in to bat is clearly the way to go – of the four times Bangalore have batted first, they’ve won only once.

Why not De Merwe if it is a turner? He was quite good for them last year.

Toss: Kumble has won the toss and Bangalore will bowl.

Two changes - Praveen Kumar and Sriram go out, KP Appanna and Manish Pandey return.

One change for Deccan. Gibbs returns in place of Dwayne Smith.

Haha ..so, one of our strike bowlers for the T20 WC cannot find a spot in his franchise playing XI !!!

Gibbs lucky to be still batting

1.1  Vinay Kumar to Gibbs, no run, really should have been a third wicket! Gibbs plays a short arm pull and Taylor jumps too early at short midwicket, makes a complete mess of it, the ball bounces off his palms

Steyn on a tear !!!

2.3 Steyn to Gibbs, OUT, through the gate! Steyn take a bow, he bowls it fuller and straight at the stumps, Gibbs was beaten for pace, went straight through and hit the off and middle stumps, the stumps are upright and the bails go flying

It is safe to say Gilly's time is up.  Thanks Gilly for last year and we want you out after this year.  I am a huge fan of yours but I like winning more than seeing the favorite players in action past ther sell by date.

If they are playing four and want Gibbs in the team he(Gilly) better make way for someone else.

The team balance is affected with Gibbs, Gilly and Symmo as three overseas players.

Gibbs is clueless anyway most night(S/R etc and not able to force the pace) and today Steyn's pace is too good for him.

Rams,

Who would be DC's captain if Gilly's contract was not to be renewed?

Edit: I think he was unlucky to get a good first ball.

DC still going at a decent pace given the early shocks.

43/3 in 7

Can Rohit Sharma justify himself being picked on reputation in the Indian T-20 squad with a match winning knock here?

Ruchir,  Need to think on that a little bit on the captaincy bit.  I think like most teams DC's team for next year will be a lot different.  A major overhaul will be in store.  I would only bring back Symonds, Harris, RS and Ojha for sure and review closely each single other one of them and make a decision only when the time comes.  And the scouts ofcourse will have to be up and working throughout after this IPL is done and be on top of things.

Btw, this is the kind of situation (1-2 / 13-3) where I would want an SG or RD to come in to bat. The only way from here on to make a game out of it is to make sure that you carry on as far as possible without losing any more wickets and hope for a big bash in the latter overs.

59-3 in 9 overs.

DC needs a blinder from someone. They have RS and AS - can these two fire in unison?

98/4 in 13...

DC seem to have done well till Mishra had the ear-freeze and ran the 2nd. Mishra and Sharma have pulled DC out of the abyss, now RS need to stay and take them to a decent total.

Mishra goes.

Well made 41 at 137 S/R.

Credit to Gilly for keeping faith in this player which he did with Suman and Venu last year one of the reasons for DC's success.

Did not dump him after a failure or two.  When you see something in a player you need to give them a few games.  And Monish Mishra did play some great shots in that inning before needlessly run-out.

RS is now associated in 13 run outs this far in the 3 IPL's.  Though this was not his fault but still he could have screamed a big NO than show his hand after initially signalling two and Mishra kept running.

The following is one set of results that needs to happen for KXIP to go through:
DCvRCB: RCB
MIvDD: MI
RRvRCB: RCB
CSKvDD: DD
KXIPvDC: KXIP
RCBvMI: MI
KKRvRR: KKR
KXIPvCSK: KXIP
DDvDC: DD
KKRvMI: MI
CSKvKKR: CSK

Then, points table will be
MI: 22
RCB: 16
DD: 16
KXIP: 12
KKR: 12
CSK: 12
RR: 12
DC: 10

and it will boil down to NRR. Yup, KXIP not out yet. Even if DC win today, KXIP has a mathematical chance.
