After IPL 3, I’ll be back to acting: Preity Zinta

Preity Zinta has been missing from the limelight (read films) for nearly two years now. But the dimpled star has had her plateful: she bought an IPL team and went to Harvard. Now, of course, she is getting ready to return to her home turf, movie sets. The actor has signed two films. However, she doesn’t want to divulge much about these projects just now.

“I dedicated 11 years of my life to films. So what’s wrong if I decide to devote a couple of years for business? Now, I know the business of cricket inside out and can finally manage it without being physically present,” Zinta says. So with the IPL 3 only a week away, the actor already has her fingers crossed and will get all her lucky charms out for the cricketing event. The team has a Punjabi well-wisher who goes to a gurudwara before her team Team XI Punjab plays a match and sends prasad to the team. “Last year, he couldn’t make it to South Africa. It’ll be good to have him back this time,” she smiles.
Soon after IPL, her focus will shift to movies. “I’m very excited about the cricket season. After that, I will be back to acting,” assures Zinta, who seems to have shed many kilos.

IPL first step in reclaiming my position in Oz team: Brett Lee

Australian fast bowler Brett Lee [ Images ] believes that a successful comeback to cricket in the Indian Premier League [ Images ] is the first step to reclaiming his position in the national team for the Twenty20 [ Images ] and the 2011 World Cup.

Lee is confident that a gruelling training and rehabilitation regime has him on the brink of returning to cricket after a four-month absence with an elbow injury.

"I've been working very closely with Patrick Farhart, who has been my physio for 16 years, and he's happy with the way it's progressing," he said.

"I'm looking to be up to full pace within a couple of weeks," The Sydney [ Images ] Morning Herald quoted Lee, as saying.

Speaking from Dubai [ Images ], at the opening of Emirates airlines' training centre for the Kings XI Punjab [ Images ] team, Lee insisted his recent retirement from Test cricket had not curbed his international ambitions in limited-overs cricket.

"It was a lifestyle choice through having a young son. I don't want to be away 11 months of the year," he said.

"There are many things I want to achieve in the shorter form of the game. One, the Twenty20 world cup for Australia [ Images ]; and two, the World Cup for Australia in India. I want to be a part of that," Lee said.

The elbow injury that caused Lee to miss the entire Australian summer came just two days after he led NSW to victory in the inaugural Champions League [ Images ] Twenty20.

Lee has been named in preliminary 30-man Australian squad named last week for the World Twenty20, to begin in the West Indies [ Images ] at the conclusion of the IPL.

what does he want his place in Oz team for ? for stupid t20s and odis ? why would a cricketer with over 300 test wickets find motivation to make a comeback for this moronic format ?

Yuvraj, VRV caught in security breach mess
Deepak Yadav , TNN, Mar 13

Chandigarh: City police has shot off a letter to IPL authorities and the manager of Kings-XI Punjab against the reported unannounced outings of two players  Yuvraj Singh and V R V Singh  from their hotel on Tuesday night. Recommending strict action against the two cricketers, cops have found that they flouted security norms by leaving Hotel Mountview without informing the security officers.

This is not the first time that local lad Yuvraj has been found guilty of brushing aside security advice.

Confirming the development, SP (security & traffic) Hardeep Singh Doon said, "I have written a detailed letter to both IPL and manager of Kings XI Punjab to take strict action against Yuvraj Singh and V R V Singh, who left the hotel during Tuesday night without informing the duty officer or taking proper security measures. This is very serious concern as players bypassed rules."

Sources in UT police said the development followed a detailed inquiry conducted by DSP (communication) Roshan Lal, who is the camp commandant at the Sector-10 hotel.

"Yuvraj went home during the night hours without taking the officers into confidence. Though VRV left later, he too did not inform us. Ideally, the players have to tell security and camp incharge around two to three hours before their scheduled outing. Around 10 players went out after taking proper measures but these two did not," said a UT cop posted for players? security at Mountview.

Earlier, security incharge of IPL, Danie, a South African national, had also visited the hotel for a discussion with DSP Roshan Lal.

Farmers target IPL to vent ire
GAJINDER SINGH

Preity Zinta, co-owner of Kings XI Punjab

Chandigarh, March 13: Farmer associations in Punjab are planning to converge on the Mohali cricket stadium next week in a bid to disrupt IPL matches to protest the state government’s decision to roll back free power.

“Thousands of farmers from all across the state will gather in Chandigarh next week to protest the Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP government’s decision to roll back free power. We will decide on the mode of protest then. Disrupting IPL matches can well be one of the ways to register our protest,” said Bhupinder Singh Mann, a former Rajya Sabha member and president of the Bharatiya Kisan Union.

The Kings XI Punjab took on the Delhi Daredevils at the Punjab Cricket Association Stadium in Mohali today. The home team will be playing four more matches in Mohali. They will be held on March 24, March 27, April 2 and April 9.

Fearing trouble, Mohali police have increased security around the stadium. Parking lots will be a kilometre from the match venue.

The protest call came after the state government’s decision to charge over 10 lakh farmers for power with retrospective effect from January, following recommendations of a two-member resource-mobilising committee comprising deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal and local bodies minister Manoranjan Kalia.

Farmers in Punjab use 5 BHP to 20 BHP tubewells to draw water from the ground for irrigation.

The cabinet has cleared the committee’s recommendation of charging Rs 50 per BHP.

“We have to draw the attention of the government towards the injustice caused to us by rolling back free power. Unless we don’t do something drastic (like disrupting IPL matches) our grievances and difficulties will never be heard,” a farmer in Sohana, on the outskirts of Mohali, said.

Mann said the Shiromani Akali Dal had promised before the elections that the party would not roll back free power to farmers. “They have to live up to the promises made during the 2007 elections or face our wrath,” Mann added.

He said Punjab farmers supplied food grains to the entire country. “With diesel and fertiliser prices hitting the sky and heavy power bills now on the anvil, we have no other option but to protest,” Mann said.

Kings XI ad row

King’s XI Punjab on Saturday apologised for a newspaper advertisement that mentioned iconic freedom fighters such as Bhagat Singh after a rights activist lodged a police complaint against the franchise.

The ad read: “The stadium was silent. Chandrashekhar Azad, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru had just walked into the stands. Are you the wildest Kings XI fan in the stadium? Then you are FAN OF THE MATCH….”

Kings XI, in a statement attributed to co-promoter Preity Zinta, said: “We have been made to understand that our recent advertisement… have hurt certain segments of the community. We apologise to the people if their sentiments have been hurt and the advertisement will be recalled with immediate effect.”

Arvind Thakur, who had lodged the police complaint, refused to accept the apology and threatened to move court. Jagmohan Singh, a nephew of Bhagat Singh, said the ad was “anti-national”. The police said they were investigating the complaint.

Whether it's big capitalist farmers growing cash crops and electricity, or Tatas and land, or Ambanis and power, you give it to them for free, and they will ask for more.

Bhagat Singh's kin sues Kings XI
Ankur Batra , TNN, Mar 17, 2010, 12.00am IST

Team Punjab, it seems, is not having a very good publicity run.

The IPL season I saw a showdown between the Mohali police and Ness Wadia over smoking in the stands, Season II was all about the Slapgate between Harbhajan Singh and S Sreesanth, and now, they are in the news for an ad featuring their team in a Chandigarh newspaper.

The advertisement, which appeared on March 13, read, “The stadium was silent. Chandrashekhar Azad, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru had just walked into the stands. Are you the wildest Kings XI fan in the stadium? Then you are fan of the match...” This ad led to some NGOs moving court, and also some protest demonstrations in and around the stadium. Now, Bhagat Singh’s grandson, Abhey Singh Sandhu, has submitted a written complaint to the Mohali police, and has also filed a suit in court in Chandigarh, which is set for a hearing today.

We spoke to Team Punjab chairperson, Preity Zinta. “It was not our intention to hurt anybody’s sentiments. I have been informed that the recent ad has hurt some people’s sentiments, which was not what we wanted. I have the utmost respect for leaders of past who made sacrifices for the country. We apologise to the people. The advertisement will be recalled with immediate effect.”

Team senior vice president (operations) Col (retd) Arvinder Singh said, “We have already apologised and we will do it again. I am meeting the senior police officers in this connection. It will be premature to say anything else as some people have taken legal recourse. The ad has been withdrawn and we are hopeful that the matter will be resolved soon.” Talking about Sandhu’s and Global Human Rights Commission lawyer Arvind Thakur’s complaint, Mohali SSP GPS Bhullar said, “I have marked an inquiry into the matter.” SP (detective) Varinder Pal Singh, who’s conducting the probe, said, “I have summoned team management and have asked them to join the probe. We have also recorded some statements.”

Thakur said, “This amounts to hurting the feelings of millions of Indians. How can someone use the names of freedom fighters for commercial gain? We have made Ness Wadia and Preity Zinta parties in this issue.” Wadia and co-owner Mohit Burman refused to comment.

"My technique has gone haywire"

Mohali's Yuvraj Singh blamed his injuries for his diving technique while fielding going "haywire".

"It's just unfortunate that I've got these injuries in the last four months. Hopefully, you know, next coming...we've got a very important year for the Indian team, and should not be getting injured this year, fingers crossed," said Yuvraj.

"It's just been happening in the last year only. I don't know, I think my technique of diving has gone a bit haywire or something," he added.

"Last four months have been frustrating and I had a bit of finger injuries and a thumb injury and now a wrist injury.

"So it's been pretty bad with injuries but done my best to get back into shape and it's feeling good now so just need to get into the match scenario," he said.

"I've been lagging behind six months now. I've been injured a lot. And it's been very frustrating sitting out, and I really want to get really fit and have a good year this time."

"When things are not right on the field, you become aggressive sometimes, sometimes it gets the best out of you, sometimes it gets the worst out of you, but captaincy is a challenge and when you're captaining a tournament for 40 days, it's actually, you look forward to it," he said.

"Sangakkara is a great person. He understands all the local players, he takes feedback from everyone, especially Mahela and myself, and when Brett Lee is there as well, he's been captaining the Sri Lankan team for a while now, so he's done a great job for Sri Lanka and I hope he does a great job for Mohali as well."

Lee's return to Australia prompted by security fears: Report
PTI, Mar 19, 2010, 12.51pm IST

MELBOURNE: Security concerns in India prompted Brett Lee's return to Australia for treatment on his injured elbow, his agent has claimed.

The fast bowler, who plays for Kings XI Punjab in the Indian Premier League, is in Sydney to get treatment on his elbow, which was operated a couple of months ago.

Lee's agent Neil Maxwell said the bowler would rather be at home for treatment than in India owing to security fears.

"From a security point of view he'd prefer to be spending the time waiting in Sydney rather than Chandigarh," Lee's manager Neil Maxwell told 'The Age'.

However, Kings XI Punjab CEO Anil Srivats insisted that Lee's decision to return had "nothing to do with security".

"There is enough precedence to know that this (kind of) stuff can always be cooked up," he said.

Yuvraj has been plain and simple dogging it. Not sure if this was evident on TV but in Tuesday's match a ball went just by him and he did not even attempt a dive. His body language during the match was terrible. He was all happy and buddy buddy with one TV reporter (Could not tell who that was from where I was sitting) but as soon as the game started you could see the lethargy creep in. He should be set loose. And never allowed anywhere close to the Indian captaincy or vice captaincy.

When Yuvi says that his diving technique has goner hay-wire, it is a fair hint at who is the real culprit.

what is the captain and coach doing abt this?

Frankly, not much a coach and specially a "foreigner" captain can do with someone whose head is messed up. He needs to look at himself and see whether what he is doing is right for the team and even for himself. Setbacks are part of life..how one deals with them reveals one's true character

Blwe:What do to think that KKR should sack Ganguly especially if he cannot put the team in a position to get to SF?

I don't think so..............KKR did the right thing.....sacked the coach...changed the captain and see...KKR has started winning....just as IPL -1.
It may be yet possible, that KKR is not good enough and they will end up winning 5 games just as they did in the first version....but that is better than winning none..

For Punjab, I believe they must sack the caoch first. The spectators will shun the matches if Yuvi is sacked...........they come to see their local lad play not some vague coaching by Moody.
Moody can at best be the drill-master. These coaches have been unnecessarily given too much space.....sitting on ppl's hesad.

If SG is unable to perform, may be he will just be there like a batting consultant....just as VVS and RD are warming the benches...some similar such role...

You answered the question.  In essense you are saying that Ganguly should be sacked should he not lead the team to the SF stage.  I understand your quandry of not being able to directly say thay Ganguly should be sacked.  That is fine.

Well it does not matter to me one way or the other.   You have no arguments left to make cricketing reasons wise.  That is a given anyway and no surprises there.
