Thought would easier to select 2 noN PLAYING then 7  who will play.
Also, Please assume VVSL as fit and ready to play.

My preferances are Badri and Raina not to play in the Kolkata test, however it seems unfair to Badri, but can't help it. Will prefer DK before him. However if RD was in team as well,  had no issues with Badri making the cut.

Picking SR is like picking Munaf Patel.He just cannot handle Steyn, but he is MSD's favorite and will make the cut over Badri I think.

I would leave out M.Vijay and Raina.

Badri should be in the list of unlucky players. He had to debut against the current best pace attack.

They should persist with Badri he has not yet had a fair run. But Raina is much better than he is being made out to be. If there is one thing that Greg C did right it was unearthing Raina. Raina is certainly better than Yuvraj.

Raina is nowhere close to a test bat !!! KKD is ok, but looked quite off against BD. Persist with Vijay and Badri, maybe swap places and have VVS at #3 and Vijay at #6.

JFK, While i agree they are no way close to what a good test bats should be, However my perspective at looking is little different.
1. First and foremost you want the players in team who can negotiate intl level(Morkel,Steyn,Parnell) bowlers.
2. Test temperament and approach.
We can cushion in a player with the likes of RD,VVS,SRT,MSD
But when you have two or three middle order spots open, you want to make sure they are not too many unknowns.
SRaina, Karthik etc.. though may lack the qualities of VVS or RD but have played at Intl level at least in 50-50 version with some success.
We had almost three nervous bats (Murali,Saha and Badri in the first match), that costed us the game. Raina has a history of highiest domestic season scored (longer versions) till  were moulded for ODIs and T20 at and had to adjust their game.
If somehow VVSL can't make it to test, I think Raina will be in.
My concern is why not introduce all these players like Saha, Badri etc against countries like BDesh when you have  all stalwarts and even their failures won't be that effective. Give them confidence as well.

i would drop KaKadi and Vijay. Play Raina and Badri.

Vijay ... really has been very mediocre in the opportunities he has had. I would have expected a decent bat to take atleast one of the innings and get a 100.

Badri did get the 50.

yes, when we pick successful players from domestics, we expect them to be ready, however, not all can be ready in 1st test itself. If we do pick them, we have to give them a continuous run of 4-5 tests. Vijay has done reasonably well in the 4 one-off tests he's played to deserve some more tests. Badri is his debut showed the temperament.

yes, selectors blunder is picking an injured player and not even have a backup batsman and paid the price heavily for it by ending up having almost 3 debutant batters. IMO, the 1st test situation warranted some one like Kaif who was in form and had international test success. I know most here won't agree, but I think Kaif deserved a place in this scenario and was probably the best option for us.

What probably cost us the game is failure of our bwolers (pathetic) and failure of gambhir. It was important for him to succeed in the absence of RD and VVS.

no doubt gambhir failure was the most important factor. who knows if he had not failed sehwag might have played a much grander innings ... think back to chennai 2008 where jaffer and sehwag had a 200+ opening stand chasing a similar score against a similar attack admittedly on a somewhat different pitch but we all agree that steyn took the pitch out of the equation anyway here ...

having said that it would not be right to blame GG for his failure .. that was after all a brute of a ball to get first up ... so maybe luck had a lot to do with it too ... one could also blame sachins shot in the first innings it could be argued that steyn set him up and sachin was not up to the challenge.

Hehe.. Raina and KKD gets 9 votes each being the top guys not to play.
Something in me says, these are the two guys who may end up making the cut for team.

What probably cost us the game is failure of our bwolers (pathetic) and failure of gambhir. It was important for him to succeed in the absence of RD and VVS.

I think failure of bowlers made sure we can't win the game taking 20 wickets.
However failure of batting ensured we can't even draw the game. another couple big knocks in each inngs  by differnt guys and the draw would not be that far.
