Australian Open
« on: January 23, 2010, 08:23:20 PM »
Now that we are going into the second week the matches are going to be a lot more interesting. Sofar all the men and women favourites have done well which is rare for a grand slam. Elimination of Kim Clijsters was surprising, especially with that score.

The match on Monday between Lleyton Hewitt and Roger Federer will be great to watch.

Sofar however no songle man or woman has impressed with any extreme superiority. I hope Justin Henin makes it far like her compatriot Clijsters did at US Open.

"The match on Monday between Lleyton Hewitt and Roger Federer will be great to watch."

Why so, Federer has won the last 14 matches. I cannot think of a less interesting matchup then an overthehill Hewitt against Federer!!

Lleyton has been in great form recently for the last one year or so as also John McEnroe would confirm. All the men's favourites - except Del Potro -  sofar are through and the next week will be really exciting. It is trhe same story with women - last US Open Champion Clijsters is out but the rest are still there (OK, with the exception of those Serbian ladies, Jankovic and Ivanovic).

Great week ahead, especially since this Test against Bangladesh does not seem to attract any posts.

The first two sets between Nadal and Murry were really great. I am afraid Cilic may be a bit tired after three consecutive 5 Set matches. Andy maz have an easy task.

Meanwhile, Sharapova decided that this job below is a lot less stressful than playing Tennis and lost in the first round.

Yes, what a match. I thought Azarenka should have won. But then Serena has done this many times before - coming back from the grave.

Meanwhile, great match by Roger Federer.

Boring Murray gets into the finals. I would have preferred Cilic there.

Serena is once again lucky to get out of jail and make it to the finals.

Hope Paes and Black make it to the finals.

Nadal - greater than Federer ???
Head to Head Nadal leads Federer 5-2 in grandslam meetings.   Now if he greater than him or if Federer is just a personal puppet of his when both of them are at their best is another question altogether.

Why sad?  I am very happy at Serena winning another GS title.  Hennnnnnnnnnnnnnnnah!!!!!!  Thanks for showing up.

Talking about luck sure it is a matter of taste and how one views things.  There are people who think Federer is extremely lucky to play in this era when for most part almost all men's players are girly men.  :P  Murray his opponent tomorrow leads that pack.   The one real man we have Nadal against whom Federer cries after each loss of his like a little girl is injury prone and how lucky Federer is in that aspect.

16 Grand Slams! The GOAT without a doubt.

Indeed!

23 consecutive grand slam semifinals on the trot (almost 6 years) and a clear 13 ahead of the ever consistent Lendl.

18 out of the last 19 grand slam finals (almost 5 years!)

The debate is history.

Surely, Serena can challenge Federer more than the likes of Nadal. In chess, the likes of Judith Polgar and Koneru Humpy play against men. Maybe tennis should make some exceptions ...they can always look to Dil Bole Hadippa for inspiration.

Well, she looks heavier and stronger than Federer anyway. Also her serve is just 5 kmh below that of Federer.

Well, she looks heavier and stronger than Federer anyway. Also her serve is just 5 kmh below that of Federer.

I doubt Serena would beat anyone in the top 25.

I remmeber navratilova mentioning that top women's players would struggle to beat a top 100 mens player and I think that holds true to a large extent despite the narrowing of some of the power gap (especially serve) due to improved racquet technology.

The difference is not so much in power but in speed. The men's game is faster, which means opponents reach your ball a few split sec faster and return a few split seconds faster --which compresses the whole game --making all the difference in play.

This will make sense if you consider that for every step (1-2 feet) early one takes the ball in the court and strikes back, he / she gains twice the advantage.

To illustrate
if Player A instead of hitting a service return from 5 feet behind the baseline can hit that return from 2 feet behind the base line by being a split second early on the shot

then the ball (by the time it reaches back to Player B) has come back after having traveled 6 less feet --

3 feet less till it reached player A and 3 feet less on its return path. That 6 feet in distance means a lesser reaction time for Player B and lesser time to hit the return ball.

Thats the difference for the most part. Then comes power --even with the narrowing of the power gap, men's tennis is still played with more power than women's.

Not being sexist -- being honest and in reality reproducing the explanation that navratilova provided, which made perfect sense.
