Ganguly penalised for coming late in Ranji match - not a joke!

Kolkata, Nov 25 (PTI) Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly was penalised today for turning up late in Bengal's Ranji Trophy match against Saurashtra at Eden Gardens here.

Ganguly joined his team more than an hour after the start of their match as he was receiving massage from the team masseur for a "back spasm" in the morning.

On day two of the match with Saurashtra resuming at their overnight score of 372 for three, Bengal began without the ace left-hander, who was substituted by Abhishek Jhunjhunwala when the play started at 9 am in the morning.

With Ganguly nowhere to be seen, Bengal became the laughing stock for those watching the match as they were reduced to 10 players when pacer Ashok Dinda had to leave the field for one over during that period.

They had only one substitute?

And is this the first time a player has not taken the field due to some niggle? Why was he penalised? Or did he come to the ground late? Something's wierd.

Cricbuzz has more of the story -- provides some details:

Ganguly penalised for arriving late

Umpires did not allow further substitution for Dinda and thus Bengal had to do with 10 players on the field.

Match Referee Suman Dutta of the Assam Cricket Association was not available for a comment but according to sources umpires Samir Bandekar and K Srinath "waited" for Ganguly for three overs before imposing a "no comfort rule" on the former India captain.

Ganguly joined at 10.10am but for his 70 minutes absence he was barred from bowling as a "penalty".

"He had developed a back spasm and was getting treated in the dressing room," Bengal captain Manoj Tiwary said.

In the post-match conference, Tiwary played it down and refused blatantly that Ganguly was absent for 70 minutes after the start of play.

Lol , Ganguly played this match only to get batting and bowling practise for IPL .Perhaps , he did not expect to get fielding practise for 2 full days and hence decided to get a good nap at home .

Meanwhile skipper manoj tiwary has apparently taken a dig at SG by saying that everyone needs to keep team interests in mind and we need to stop going by reputations. I'll post the article when I get on a comp or someone can do a google search.

SG needs to stop kidding himself here.  First pick and choose games and then appear late to the ground on one of the match days.   Though it is not the end of the world he needs to understand the rules are the same for everyone.  You know what - Let Abhisek Jhunjunwala get these games.  They mean a tad more to him than SG at this stage of his career.  I got some news for Ganguly.  You need to get ready for IPL.  These 4 day games 4 months removed from the next IPL is not the answer.   Just do your regular workouts appear in couple of local league games every now and then and during the two weeks leading up to the IPL appear in the warm up games for your team and take it up a notch and be match ready.   Pretty much the same formula Gilly and Hayden applied last time around.  That should do.  If that does not not cut it then you are no good anyway.

Here is the link to that article though I am not sure based on the contents of the quotes how that qualifies as a dig at SG.  It applied to the team as a whole as I read it though the word "reputation" in there could have prompted these guys to come up with that title.  Little over the top for me atleast.  Poor Tiwary.  Hope he is not taken to task for this.  Actually he is one of the players in the entire league that is having a steller season.  Hope he does not get distracted and continues in his rich vein of form.

You can be rest assured, he didn't hint at Ganguly.
Manoj Tewary is clever enough to realize where he stands in Bengal cricket. It is anyway a poor advertisement of the current Bengal team, that they had to recall Ganguly, out of retirement.

Well, Rams, what else does "reputation" mean? I mean who else in Bengal has any real reputation to boast of? One can read whatever one likes into these words but given all that has transpired (picking and choosing games, arriving late at the game), I would tend to believe that the finger points towards SG.

Say goodbye to reputations: Manoj
- Stand-in Bengal captain sends out strong message to teammates

A STAFF REPORTER

Calcutta: Manoj Tiwary should be lauded for speaking his mind.

The stand-in Bengal captain gave vent to his ire against the players for their listless performance in the Ranji Trophy match against Saurashtra.

“We should say goodbye to reputations… Every individual has to think about the team goal,” said a livid Tiwary, without naming anyone.

Does it mean that the players haven’t been performing with the team goal in mind?

“I will only say there’s room for improvement in this area,” he clarified.

Bengal, needing 331 runs to overhaul Saurashtra’s 650 with eight wickets remaining, lost the plot on the final day at the Eden. The visitors enforced follow-on after Bengal finished 194 runs in arrears.

Bengal, who could have got three points from the match had their batsmen showed some discipline, had to remain content with just one. The visitors took home the three points.

The CAB, for its part, tried to brush things under the carpet by sending a strong message to Tiwary.

Manager Russi Jeejeebhoy was told the captain should try and avoid “unnecessary controversies” off the field.

“He can’t speak on matters that might affect the team spirit… He should have shown more responsibility when speaking to the media… Moreover, the manager should have been present at the news conference,” said a senior CAB official.

Tiwary was candid and didn’t make any attempt to hide his feelings.

“We played bad shots on Friday. We had planned to play out the first session but that didn’t happen. I fell to a poor shot in the second over of the day.

“Batting was our strength and we needed to apply ourselves… But, then, cricket is a one ball game. We played poorly and have got to accept that it is part and parcel of the game,” he explained.

He didn’t spare anyone. “We need to be more disciplined. The bowlers need to bowl to their fields and that’s just not happening. We need to improve in all departments. I know the team is capable of performing better and we need to apply ourselves,” said Tiwary.

He also explained the logic behind continuing with Arindam Das and Deep Dasgupta in the final hour despite farcical bowling and appeals by the rival captain to bring proceedings to an end.

“I wanted them to get some runs under their belt. I didn’t want anyone to point a finger at them when selection issues are raised.”

Tiwary knows well that the final two group matches against Uttar Pradesh and Delhi will be tough.

The CAB, however, can breathe easy as regular captain Laxmi Ratan Shukla is fit and available for the next match against Uttar Pradesh in Kanpur from December 8.

I agree.
MT is in no position to take a dig at Ganguly, whom they have requested back into the team. Infact the concept of MT getting the captaincy ahead of LRS or DD, is a disputed event in CAB.
Whatever, I hope MT lets his bat do the talking.

I agree Ganguly is not singled out. It is likely that his ire was mostly at DDG who was sulking at being ignored for captaincy. That said he does say "every individual" - which includes Ganguly.

Yeah, he might have said ' every individual' casually, but most likely he didn't have Ganguly in mind. :)

Ganguly is a busy guy, these days and you cannot expect him to attend to all the nitty-gritties of local level cricket.

i am not bothered ..just find it funny.

i hope mumbai would turn sachin down if he is picking and choosing home matches to play after his retirement, turns up late for matches etc. we, anyway, win quite often without sachin.

Yeah, he might have said ' every individual' casually, but most likely he didn't have Ganguly in mind. :)

Ganguly is a busy guy, these days and you cannot expect him to attend to all the nitty-gritties of local level cricket.
No one put a gun to his head.  It is him who wanted to appear for these games in the name of getting ready for the IPL.   So if he is busy and cannot honor the commitments he might as well sit out.  It is not as if this Bengal team is missing him or his presense will make this team a contender.  If anything his on and off appearance will affect the team composition and takes away a youngsters spot.

doesnt look like a dig on ganguly

I agree.
MT is in no position to take a dig at Ganguly, whom they have requested back into the team. Infact the concept of MT getting the captaincy ahead of LRS or DD, is a disputed event in CAB.
Whatever, I hope MT lets his bat do the talking.

Actually, it is between the team management and the coach. They feel that Ganguly's presence is required to inspire the team..............so be it. ::cheers::

LOL yeah sure. Bengal "requested" SG to come back and play in only the home games.

so, why are you so bothered? would mumbai turn sachin down?

i am not bothered ..just find it funny.

i hope mumbai would turn sachin down if he is picking and choosing home matches to play after his retirement,
Why can't he do so? Harmisson a& Trescothic can do so, almost every Soccer player does so--so what's thethe big deal if he wants  to play half the games

pathetic gangulians turning their guns on a guy who talks about team first. What an amazing commentary about a bunch of pathetic fans stuck on a selfish cricketer who puts self over every team he has ever played in.

A possibility which cannot be ruled out.

Anyway I still wouldn't mind if he castigated Ganguly. His stated reason to play Ranjis was to get fit for the IPL. Given this, his 16 in 18 balls is bound to raise eyebrows. Ranji is first class cricket and it can't be treated as training for private ventures. It was through this very Ranji cricket that Ganguly rose to become India's most successful captain. Manoj T has every right to be angry.
