Glamorgan penalty is carried over

The Swalec Stadium had £3m of improvements during the winter

Glamorgan will start next season's revamped 40-over league with a two-point penalty, it has been confirmed. The county were punished for a poor Swalec Stadium pitch in their Friends Provident Trophy defeat by Essex.

The England and Wales Cricket Board pitch panel's verdict was after an assessment of the track on 12 May.

Glamorgan did not appeal against the deduction so Matthew Maynard's team will begin the new ECB 40 League next summer on minus two points.

Pitch panel liaison officers Mike Denness and Tony Pigott had decided the level of turn for Essex's seven-wicket win was "excessive".

Following the umpires' initial report, the panel liaison officers inspected the ground during Lancashire's one-day win on Friday, 15 May.

The decision to carry forward Glamorgan's two-point penalty was made as the ECB announced their revamped 40-over competition, which replaces the Friends Provident Trophy and the Pro40 league.

The new ECB 40-over league will have eight overs of powerplay at the start of each innings and two additional blocks of four overs available during the rest of the game.

Glamorgan won the limited-overs league - in its previous incarnations as the Sunday League and National League - in 1993, 2002 and 2004.
