looking forward to watch Teen Patti this weekend. hopefully will be as good as the English version - 21

is it a version of 21? i'm worried about Big B's hamming.

hamming ?

As per teen patti director, it is not copied from 21 but inspired from the same true story as 21 - the MIT students cracking vegas blackjack. After watching will know how true is it or is it inspired bollywood style ;)

Ok. You dont think Big B hams these days?

ISHQIYA - A good movie, but beyond the style, the dialect, the setting & a stellar cast, the film fails to reach a high. A bit underwhelming after the hype. Kya kare ...dil toh bachcha hai jee ...yeh maange more!
I loved ISHQIYA for a sheer freshness in dealing with female character..no big dialogue, no screaming, fighting from female character etc., a matter of fact equal footing for female and male protagonists...one should watch this one atleast for this one aspect. I hope bollywood makes more such movies which treats female as just another human being instead of objectifying them.

How does that make it a good movie? Such films may be rare but there are enough. Madhur Bhandarkar has made enough movies with female protagonists. So has Raj Kumar Santoshi. But at the end of the day you need to have a good plot / story ..Ishqiya was sorely lacking on that front. Instead, most of the effort appeared to be focused on getting the dialect, locales, look etc right while the plot just meandered along.

kic, you missed my point. At least I never saw any potrayal of female characters as in this movie. Usually female lead characters in indian movies fall into 2 categories a. objectified , dancing, running around hero, meek

b. fierce, shouting, avenging the wrong female ( basically a typical hero in all indian movies who happened to be a female). Inspite of all the shouting, there are enough scenes to make these characters conform to social norms, cooking, dutiful to husband, MIL , FIL, kids etc.

ISHQIYA has something I never saw in hindi movies before. A  lead female character who is normal human being ( with her own pluses & minuses) on equal footing with other males in the plot, who is not conforming to any artificial limits, sexually making her own choices etc. There is no extra pressure on this character to be "good" compared to other characters.

You should catch Corporate or Fashion or Lajja or Astitva ...these are just off the top of my head. It is good to see cliches being ignored but my point was that this alone cannot make a movie good.

I did watch corporate, fashion, astitva, but I still think ISHQIYA is
better.

I am not saying that alone will make a movie great, there are other aspects of this movie which made it intriguing and good watch.

But, in the indian context, atleast personally, THAT alone is enough to watch this movie. It is refreshing to see in a indian movie and I am generally sick of standard female characters.

KARTHIK CALLING KARTHIK - is like a typical conference call at work ...starts off well but gradually gets predictable & you start wondering when it will end. Still, worth answering this call once!

TEEN PATTI : Did the Director read only bits and pieces of the true story - what a poor adaptation if one can call it that !!! Starts off well, but falls flat after the build up. AB's hamming is in overdrive int he movie. For once, I wish they had copied the English movie 21 exactly.

Watched this yesterday ...completely agree ...inspiring and entertaining.

I'm just wondering what it would have been like had they made this in Hindi. Mandela would probably have given the team a pep talk during the half time ...and also signalled a subtle winning tactic to the skipper as the clock ran down :D

Hey..you guys are taking off on good old PP! ::cheers::
He too tried his hand ( rather, his scalp) as a movie- critique.................didn't quite work for him, just as his ideological home-coming with GC, More, Pawar, et al. :)

btw, I had to watch My name is Khan and Atithi Tum kab Jaoge, thanks to my wife's insistance. I wasn't terribly disappointed though. Avoidable, but yet watchable, if you have to.

watched Atithi kab jaoge .... had actually gone to watch Kartik calling Kartik but a gangulian ticket sales guy at the movie theater in delhi duped me into watching this crap. Absolutely the worst movie I have ever watched since the 80's when Chunky pandey used to think of himself as a hero.

Holy cow .... this movie had no sir or paon. Dont even watch it for free! Even the 2 dollars on a dvd are a waste!

Are you serious?? A lot of ppl have liked it ...I was upset I didn't go watch ...guess I'll just wait for it to come on tv now.

Btw one reco for you - watch Love, Sex aur Dhoka - apparently it is mindblowing, unless Ekta Kapoor bought all the reviews.

not sure what CP is talking about..it was definitely watchable and it kept me involved even when things were a bit predictable. It is notthat great a movie but then Paresh Rawal makes it enjoyable in bits and pieces.

but be warned before you take my review,  my all time fav one is pather panchali..I think it remains with you forever once you watch it.

I completely agree, if there was ever a movie where a talented actor like Paresh Rawal was wasted it is this, Konkona Sensharma has no comic talent whatsoever....

absolutely serious. Save the 200 rupees that you would spend on this to buy me a beer :)

It really was a movie which has no story line. Uninvited guest who comes to your house and annoys and you miss him when they are ready to leave.

The movie was predictable. You knew not only what would happen but even the jokes were very predictable. It was dragged out .... really the whole hospital scene was just to fill in an extra 20 mts with NO relevance at all to the movie.

This would make a watchable 20 minute TV episode which the director tried to drag over to a 2 hour movie.

Flute, Pathar Panchali and this are not even in the same hemisphere in terms of quality. Its offensive to satyajit ray to even think that anyone can compare this crap with his movie!

nah not sure where you got the comparison part..
I know quite a few people who look at me weird when I tell them about pather panchali ( of course these are usually mass masala viewers) ..so I was warning them that I like such movies in case they take my review of this one seriously and go watch it..

anywayn, not sure what you are talking about this movie..it worked for me..just time paas and bindas and paresh rawal...if it is free and watched at home, it can be watched once IMO

I liked the Kaalia part especially........the way Paresh Rawal went after Kaalia.. :D

Best dialogue:

while piddling in the public urinal.....

PR-: Kya baat hai!...ek mahan insaan Kaalia saab aur main ek saath mootr kar rahe hain! :D

PR-: Kitne aadmi the?
Kaalia( almost voluntarily)-: Do...

PR -: Aur hum teen......phir bhi hum moot rahe hain!

( Kaalia's helpless expression is worth watching).

The devotional song PR sings in the community temple with the Bidi Jalai le tune ....was also quite funny.

watched it on tv yesterday !! was a total disaster !!!

Right yaa Wrong - definitely wrong for the audience !! The mystery in the murder mystery thriller as to who murdered who lasted for 5 minutes ;). And most annoying was they keep right yaa wrong in the 2nd half just to make sure everyone knows the movie title !!  ;D ;D

come now ... wasnt that bad by Indian movie standards. I watched 2 movies in India (this and atithi) and this was by far head and shoulders above Atithi. In T20 terms if Atithi was ganguly this was atleast Manoj Tiwari :)

No I did not. I was travelling and now it has made way for Clash of the Titans. Avatar continues to run here on IMAX 3D.

Didnt hear too many good things about Alice in Wonderland though.

not sure if anyone covered it here but watched Road to Sangham yesterday..superb....paresh rawal rocks once again..I wanted to watch for 15 min before going to sleep, but the film just did not let me go..right from first frame, things were very well made..first scenes of Paresh Rawal's machanic shop were really impressive..very very similar to what I was used to seeing in Hyd.
