Though it is a little early without a doubt this is what the Nobel peace committee thought in short.

--

Rather than recognizing concrete achievement, the 2009 prize appeared intended to support initiatives that have yet to bear fruit: reducing the world stock of nuclear arms, easing American conflicts with Muslim nations and strengthening the U.S. role in combating climate change.

"Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," Thorbjoern Jagland, chairman of the Nobel Committee said. "In the past year Obama has been a key person for important initiatives in the U.N. for nuclear disarmament and to set a completely new agenda for the Muslim world and East-West relations."

He added that the committee endorsed "Obama's appeal that 'Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges.'"

I like and support Obama, but I think this is too early.

I think Nobel Peace Prize is the only Nobel Prize that is given in anticipation of performance rather than on actual performance. The same Prize for Rabin and Arafat (for achieving Peace in the middle east  :D :D)is one such great example. For all other disciplines they wait until 10 or 20 years for recognizing the achievement.

whole thing is BS. Nobel peace prize never carried much value in my eyes. it is always sensitive to current politics and always more weightage is given to western world and its stability and its peace.

It is a peace prize created by a guy who invented "Dynamite", as a way to compensate for developing destructive forces. Rightfully (because it was in the name of a fellow who created destructive tools), Mahatma *hi never deserved to get it inspite of inspiring many leaders like Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela & now 2009 Nobel peace prize winner Barack Obama.

Barack Obama deserved to win this prize "for inspiring hope towards peace". Not for actually achieving peace. But for inspiring hope towards peace, by making gestures that America is willing to move away from Bush's methods. That is the only achievement Barack Obama had. To take America away from Bush's methods. That is what "inspiring hope towards peace". This is parallel to what Nobel did. Create destructive forces and then create a prize to  "inspire hope towards peace".

Following from Wikipedia:

Nobel died in 1896 and did not leave an explanation for choosing peace as a prize category. The categories for chemistry and physics were obvious choices as he was a trained chemical engineer. The reason behind the peace prize is less clear. Scholars who studied Nobel have said it was Nobel's way to compensate for developing destructive forces (Nobel's inventions included dynamite and ballistite). None of his explosives, except for ballistite, were used in any war during his lifetime,[3] although the Irish Republican Brotherhood, an Irish nationalist organization, did carry out dynamite attacks in the 1880s[4] and he was instrumental in turning Bofors from an iron company to an armaments company whilst he owned it.

The Committee has confirmed that *hi was nominated in 1937, 1938, 1939, 1947 and, finally, a few days before he was murdered in January 1948.[17] The omission has been publicly regretted by later members of the Nobel Committee.[15] In 1948, the year of *hi's death, the Nobel Committee declined to award a prize on the ground that "there was no suitable living candidate" that year. Later, when the Dalai Lama was awarded the Peace Prize in 1989, the chairman of the committee said that this was "in part a tribute to the memory of Mahatma *hi".[18]

I don't understand what is meant to be achieved by this "reducing nuclear stock-pile". To create a fake example for their efforts to make sure none of the other countries get a Nuclear bomb. That is what it achieves. Nothing more.

Will America or Russia reduce its stock of nuclear bombs to "zero"? Never. Can they force either of China, India, Israel or Pakistan to reduce it to "Zero"? Never. They can't even force Pakistan to act against Al Qaeda's most senior leadership. How can they force Pakistan to reduce it to "Zero"?

So, what does this "reducing nuclear stock-pile" achieve?. Nothing substantially. No contribution towards peace, except to achieve their own goals of not allowing other nations to get a Nuclear Bomb and making big speeches at International Stage.

Easing American conflicts with Muslim Nations? Hahaha. Americans believe that the only way to create world peace is to make all the countries in the world (specially, the muslim countries) "Democratic". And how do they make other countries democratic? By forcing a war on them and then rebuilding it like Iraq.

Strengthening US Role in combating climate change? What is US's Role? Force other countries to reduce emissions? What does the US do to reduce emissions? Making speeches on "Green Energy".

Analysis: Did Obama win Nobel for not being Bush?

http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/10/09/oakley.obama.nobel/index.html

So some people think, Bush won the Nobel Peace Prize for Obama.

What has the world come to?

Have we forgotten what the Nobel Peace Prize is given out for? To go by tradition, one must do something for the prize, one can't just get it by saying he would do things or believes in things. One actually has to do stuff. Like Arafat ... he fought, had enough people killed, and then suddenly decided he could stop. That is what gets you the peace prize. Now, granted that Obama might, with all his new policies, lead everything down the drain. But he has not yet had the opportunity to do so. What has he really done to deserve this insult?

It has more to do with Norwegian politics which I don't think anybody really gives a * about.

No. Two weeks into his presidency he was nominated among hundred and odd others. For this Prize anybody can get nominated and usually the US Presidents (among probably other heads) always get nominated. Getting the award is another matter.
