Sehwag quits as Delhi captain in IPL

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS (CP) – 31 minutes ago

NEW DELHI — Aggressive opener Virender Sehwag quit as captain of Twenty20 Indian Premier League's Delhi Daredevils on Monday.

Sehwag, who is recovering from a shoulder injury sustained during this year's IPL tournament in South Africa, said he wanted to focus on his batting.

Daredevils franchise chairman Srinivas Bommidala said the team respected Sehwag's decision.

"When he expressed a desire to step down in order to fully focus and concentrate on batting, we respected his decision and accepted his request," Bommidala said in a statement.

Sehwag's opening partner, Gautam Gambhir, will lead Delhi Daredevils in next month's Champions League tournament featuring top provincial T20 teams from five countries.

Sehwag, who will turn 31 next month, averages 24.5 in 47 T20 internationals, with a top score of 94 not out and six half centuries.

That's down on his average of 34.33 in limited-overs internationals for India and 50 in Test cricket.

bad move IMO.

1. with his problems with DDCA, now part of folklore, no brownie points.
2. GG, IMO, too inexperienced to lead an IPL side.

Maybe good point - he wants to concentrate on his batting.

Since he was made the DDD captain, sorry, actually from before that point he has been batting extremely well for India. His batting has not been that great for his IPL team though.

I dont care much for IPL but if it helps VS in anyway to perform better, I am all for it.

It also brings forth the point which many previous captains have said before that captainship is just like another attribute in the field.

e.g.

allrounder = batsmen + bowler,  batsmen + wicketkeeper, batsmen/bowler + captain.

I hope you get the gist.

Personally I think GG is a better player to lead than Sehwag.  GG from what I have seen comes across has someone who can lead by example with a very good understanding of the game.   Someone like a Sehwag who openly talks about such things as I will play my own game no matter what the team situation is, is better off as a player anyway.

Also I do not put much stock into the too inexperienced thing.  Greame Smith was offered to lead SA a quota team and much more complex setting in his early 20's and our own Tiger Pataudi led India when he was way less than 25.  So GG leading a IPL unit which has nothing to DDCA and a private entity owned by GMR group is nothing big in comparision.

I like GG over Sehwag anyday and think of GG as a better overall cricketer having come through the ranks having done the hard yards.   Plus GG is very competitive and has a quite aggression about him.

In my books after MSD he is the one guy I would zero in on over the likes of Sehwag, Yuvraj or Harbhajan and this move by Delhi IPL team is the step in the right direction.

But Sehwag has shown amazing selflessness here. He has declined to be vice-captain of the Indian team and captain of Delhi ...because he knows that he is unlikely to be captain after Dhoni ..so, it is a good idea to groom someone else for the job.

While i don't agree GG is an inexperienced player to lead Delhi. I am not sure of the real reason VS resigned. I tend to think his spat with DCA has contributed  in this this decision.
As per GG leading Delhi DareDevil's , He will definately have all the inputs form VS and his chance to take some resoponsibility.
GG has been in the itneranationl arena for a while now and has a matured head over shoulders.
I see this as foward looking move.
