India's hockey goalie injures eye

PUNE/NEW DELHI: In a freak accident, India ’ s hockey goalkeeper Baljit Singh suffered a serious injury to his right eye during a training session, which could result in complete loss of vision. The 28-year-old custodian was hit in the Balewadi (Pune) camp during the golf ball practice session with the team ’ s goalkeepers ’ coach Romeo James.

Baljit was airlifted to Delhi on Saturday morning and was operated upon at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for corneoscleral perforation of the right eye by a team of surgeons led by cornea specialist Dr Sudershan Khokhar.

Calling the injury a very bad one, doctors who conducted the two-hour-long repair of the cornea and sclera of the eye and the lid on Saturday morning told TOI that chances of Singh regaining his vision look dim at the moment.

Sources told TOI that Baljit was not wearing a helmet with an extra visor fitted to keep the golf ball away. Not only has Singh suffered severe hemorrage inside the eye, with large amount of blood clots, the 28-year-old Chandigarh keeper has also suffered retinal detachment and extensive corneal scleral perforation.
The sclera is commonly known as “ the white of the eye ” . It is the opaque tissue that serves as the eye ’ s protective outer coat. Damage to the cornea due to corneal perforation can cause decreased visual ability.

Speaking to TOI, a doctor in the surgical team said, “ The optical nerve does not look very good. After we remove the bandage on Sunday, we will have to see how well the wound has healed. It is a very bad injury. The eye is not in good shape as far as recovery of vision is concerned.
