dlee tells me that the new one has the ability to do cut and paste and some upgraded search capabilities. The cut and paste would be a huge improvement. I miss that more here than on any of my previous PDA's

It is amazing how apple is marketing a basic feature that they clearly screwed-up in the original - "cut-n-paste" - as a major improvement ;D They are taking a leaf out of Microsoft's manual here. Screw-it-up first and then present as an enhancement!

As good as the iphone is .... some of the costs of ownership ... specially when in roaming around the world is amazing.

On my blackberry .. I had a world unlimited data plan from Verizon that cost me about a $100 a month or so for unlimited data use anywhere in the world.

On iPhone .... the cost of roaming is $100 for about 50meg of data. There is no unlimited plan. I can get 100 meg for about $200  and thats the best I can get.

On the BB the international roaming calls used to cost me 1.49 a min. Here the cost is $2.49 a min. It is just terrible.

They have an exclusive grip on the market and they are exploiting it to the fullest!

To me the lack of Qwerty keyboard is a killer.. I see so many typos in emails from those using iphone, it is not even funny.

Everybody likes it.. but lives with its shortcomings.. such is the hype! The lack of keyboard is a serious deficiency, imo.

The keyboard is fine as is. It needs getting used to ... but the type ahead functionality of the iphone is pretty good. I can type at a decent pace. The issue is with those who dont read what they type (or dont care ... like me :) ) . The type ahead can take some mis spellings and turn them into something funny. You have to be careful.

Outside of the roaming cost (and their totally poor coverage at the OVAL cricket ground) ... the phone itself is pretty good. it is so much better than anything else that is out there. The rendering of the graphics and the color of the screen is fantastic. The way you can use a regular safari browser and load regular pages (not the pipsy mobile versions) is awesome. The two touch mouse rendering is the coolest thing I have seen on a PDA.

WN - you are spot on. Many features are there in other phones since long. I am speaking from the POV of the end product. iPhone 3G S is the fastest phone in market. It still lacks flash player capability, but the product is the best in the market.  Look at the video URL I posted in 2nd post. It is a 15 min demo.

Actually, the screen resolution of the iPhone is weaker than a lot of phones including the N97.

The most awesome smartPhone I have seen out there is the G1. However, the network it is on is not the greatest when it comes to 3G service and just plain old phone service. If I were you, I'd get an out of contract G1 and then get an AT & T SIM.

PS - I own an iPhone 3G (besides a Samsung Blackjack and a N95)

btw im looking to buy a 3gs. it comes out in uae locked to a carrier next month, but the charges are atrocious:

[3G rates - 3GS will probably be more]
$500 upfront for the device, then 12 month contract with a minimum of $60 per month (125 SMS', 125 outgoing minutes [incoming is always free in uae], 250MB data)

there are 4 or 5 plans like that with varying upfront amounts and monthly plans.

dont want to pay this much. buying the phone outside the carrier is also terribly expensive (i can buy it now for $1300) and then pay-as-i-go for calls and data.

any solutions? suggestions?

Is there a US service provider/phone/plan that is a good efficient solution for using both in the US and India (occasionally)?  I don't care about any fancy features--simply need to be able to talk and access my outlook e-mail on both continents.

verizon .... with their blackberry world phone ... works with Reliance in india. the world data plan gives you unlimited around the world for about $100 a month .... you can always drop the international plan when you are here.

the cell call costs around $1.49 a min when in india (or anywhere outside the us). a good deal relatively speaking

call att and tell them that you want to get the phone unlocked. They will send you instructions for how to unlock.. usually you have to type in a bunch of codes to get it unlocked.

Exactly..

On HTC, Samsung and other phones, AT&T gives you the unlock code, when you call them ... I am not sure if they do that for the iphone.

Once a phone is unlocked you can use any sim.

Due to non-availability of 3G, web-browsing on my HTC is very slow (almost impossible) in India.. but Exchange push email  works well on GPRS.

DOJ Opens Review of Telecom Industry
By AMOL SHARMA

The Department of Justice has begun an initial review to determine whether large U.S. telecom companies such as AT&T Inc. and Verizon Communications Inc. have abused the market power they've amassed in recent years, according to people familiar with the matter.

The review of potential anti-competitive practices is in its very early stages, and it isn't a formal investigation of any specific company at this point, the people said. It isn't clear whether the agency intends to launch an official inquiry.

Among the areas the Justice Department could explore is whether wireless carriers are hurting smaller competitors by locking up popular phones through exclusive agreements with handset makers, according to the people. In recent weeks lawmakers and regulators have raised questions about deals such as AT&T's exclusive right to provide service for Apple Inc.'s popular iPhone in the U.S.

The Justice Department may also review whether telecom carriers are unduly restricting the types of services other companies can offer on their networks, one person familiar with the situation said.

The scrutiny of the telecom industry is an indication of the Obama administration's aggressive stance on antitrust enforcement. The Justice Department's antitrust chief, Christine Varney, has said she wants to reassert the government's role in policing monopolistic and anti-competitive practices by powerful companies.

The statute that governs such behavior – the Sherman Antitrust Act – was used by the government in cases against giants ranging from Standard Oil to Microsoft Corp. But it lay essentially dormant during the Bush years, with the agency bringing no major case.

Now Ms. Varney plans to revive that area of U.S. law, and the telecom industry is among several sectors – including health care and agriculture – that are coming under scrutiny, the people familiar with the matter said. She is already tackling one high-tech area by investigating Google Inc.'s settlement with authors and publishers over its Book Search product.

Through a spasm of consolidation and organic growth, AT&T and Verizon have become the two dominant players in telecommunications, with the largest networks and major clout over equipment makers. Combined, they control 90 million landline customers and 60% of the 270 million U.S. wireless subscribers. They also operate large portions of the Internet backbone, ferrying data across the country and overseas.

A Justice Department spokeswoman declined to comment.

Some antitrust experts said the government would have a tough time opening a Sherman Act case against telecom providers if it chooses to do so. To bring a case, the government must show that a company is abusing its market power.

"It would be a very hard case to make," said Donald Russell, a Washington attorney who reviewed a number of major telecom mergers as a DOJ antitrust lawyer in the Clinton Administration. "You don't have any firm that's in a dominant position. Usually, you need to show a firm has real market power."

N97 memory -- 128MB

--------

So, I'm not sure what you have been reading or hearing but G1 is inferior to iPhone 3GS in every way. Lower ppi means less sharper picture. G1 has inferior processor and half the RAM. So what you consider BS is actually the USP of iPhone. Show me one other cell phone that boasts of such processor and RAM. iPhone 3G had the same processing hardware as original iPhone, so don't compare that to G1 or N97.

So, look at the complete package, as I have been saying. Don't pick one thing of one phone, another thing of another phone and say iPhone 3GS is weaker than X phone in this one area, weaker than Y phone in that one area, so it is the weakest phone. Compare the whole of 3GS with the whole of any other phone.

as i said .. anally :)

we paid $199 for the 3G (it is now $99) and the contract is 2 year. Their plans are expensive ... but competitive if you are not roaming abroad. They rape you on the overseas plans. no beeping unlimited data plan when abroad (unlike Verizon's blackberry world phone)
