What a loss for Vijay Yadav!
« on: April 04, 2006, 02:01:01 AM »
W V Raman, the former India opening batsman is never short of words. But yesterday, he was choked when he telephoned to console his friend Vijay Yadav, India’s erstwhile wicketkeeper.

On Saturday night, Yadav met with a road accident which resulted in the death of his 11-year-old daughter Sonali and a cousin. Yadav’s wife Amrita is in a critical state while the cricketer escaped with a collar bone injury.

Raman and Yadav were on India’s 1992-93 tour to South Africa, a trip where their friendship blossomed.

“We became very close during that series. Plus, his wife is from Chennai (where Raman resides) and Vijay played with me at MRF in the late 1990s,” Raman said yesterday.

After his 11 am phone call, Raman reckoned that the gravity of the situation had not fully sunk in with his mate. “Poor Vijay. He told me that his wife was being operated but I don’t think he knew at that point of time that she was critical.

“In times like these one wonders why such things should happen to good people. And Vijay is a good man. I was finding it difficult to find words of comfort.  When Raman rang up in the evening, Yadav was weeping beyond control.

The next 24 hours are going to be crucial for Amrita. “I hardly get affected by anything but I am totally shaken up by this tragic incident,” said Raman.

The telephone calls to Yadav did not end without some words of encouragement. “Try to brave and take care of her,” Raman said.

Really very sad. Praying for the best wishes for Amrita and Vijay in these critical times.

On that series of South Africa, both these guys were responsible for the 2 wins India had over South Africa. Raman with a century and Vijay with a gutsy 40 something.

Real bad luck , just a couple of days before I read an interview with Yadav in mid day. He seemed a pretty down to earth simple kind of guy, to loose a child is the biggest possible loss.
