The average length of the penis is 6.16 inches and the average girth is 4.84 inches. This is the content of a project submitted by a 11-year-old student from a south Mumbai school.

Majid Ansari, 14, (name changed), brother of Nazia, 11) unknowingly downloaded a survey on the average size of a penis from the Internet. The project expected from Nazia, a Std V student, was on ‘averages’.

Majid thought the survey, thrown up by a search engine, fit her project as it had several stats. It was submitted a month ago, but came to light only after the class teacher picked it up for assessment last week.

Majid said, “I didn’t check the content. I just typed ‘average’ in the search engine and got many results. This page was the second link, and had lots of figures. So I took a printout and gave it to my sister.” Majid realised he had made a mistake much later, when Nazia’s teachers and the principal grilled him about the incident. “Why would I do something like this on purpose?” he said.

Siraj Kazmi, Majid’s uncle, said, “I had helped Majid with his project on Shakespeare a month ago. I used a search engine, and he must have realised how efficient it was. So he did the same thing for Nazia.”

On March 25, the school called the parents. The principal, who did not want the school named, said, “Initially, we thought he had done it on purpose. But then we realised he wouldn’t have got his sister in trouble intentionally.”

Nazia still doesn’t know what all the fuss is about. “It is very difficult to explain to a Std V girl about a survey on penis sizes,” said a teacher
