Cape Town: Kings XI Punjab defeated Rajasthan Royals by 27 runs at the Newlands cricket ground here on Sunday to register its second win in four IPL matches this season.

Electing to bat, Punjab made 139 for seven in its allotted 20 overs thanks to a 75-run partnership between Kumar Sangakkara (60, 51b, 7x4, 1x6) and Irfan Pathan (39) after it had slumped to 48 for four. Punjab then restricted Rajasthan to 112 for seven in 20 overs.

Although Punjab’s captain Yuvraj Singh handed off-spinner Ramesh Powar the new ball, it was his left-armers, Irfan and Yusuf Abdulla, who made the early inroads, reducing Rajasthan to 27 for four.

Irfan forced Swapnil Asnodkar to top-edge a pull before having Graeme Smith caught behind off a delivery that left the left-hander. Abdulla had Rob Quiney adjudged caught down the leg-side. He then uprooted Dimitri Mascarenhas’s off-stump.

Yusuf Pathan showed good signs, hitting brother Irfan for two fours. But leg-spinner Piyush Chawla dismissed the dangerous batsman, deceiving him into top-edging a sweep. Chawla also removed Abhishek Raut to have Rajasthan teetering on 42 for six in the ninth over. Ravindra Jadeja (37) and Shane Warne (34 n.o.) didn’t give up, putting on 60 for the seventh wicket. But Abdulla returned to york Jadeja in the 19th over, leaving Rajasthan an improbable 34 to get in the final over.

Earlier in the day, Kings XI Punjab made a disastrous start, losing three crucial wickets of Karan Goel (0), Ravi Bopara (11) and skipper Yuvraj Singh (2) within a span of 6.1 overs with only 38 runs on board.
