Deccan Chargers, last year's winners of the wooden spoon, are the form team this season and lead the league after two matches. Their opponents at Kingsmead, however, are likely to present a tougher challenge than did Kolkata Knight Riders and Bangalore Royal Challengers.

Despite a star-studded batting line-up Deccan were last season's whipping boys and the reasons for a disappointing performance were their batsmen failing to fire collectively and a weak bowling attack. Their two victories in the tournament so far have been set up by at least two top-order batsmen performing in the same innings. The purchase of Fidel Edwards and RP Singh's ability to swing the new ball has boosted their bowling attack as well.

Mumbai beat the formidable Chennai Super Kings in the opening game of the IPL but their second match, against Rajasthan Royals, was washed out in Durban, leaving them with three points after two games. They possess one of the most complete bowling attacks in the tournament - Zaheer Khan and Lasith Malinga backed up by Harbhajan Singh and Dwayne Bravo. Their batting line-up - Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya, JP Duminy, Dwayne Bravo and Abhishek Nayar - will present Edwards and Co with their sternest Test yet.

Form guide

Mumbai: One match isn't much to go by but it appeared as though Tendulkar plans to play the anchoring role while the other batsmen played around him. He constructed a match-winning 59 not out against Chennai while Nayar provided the thrust towards the end by hitting Andrew Flintoff for three sixes in an over. Lasith Malinga was struggling with injury problems last season, bowled a crucial spell of 3 for 18, while his Sri Lankan team-mate Jayasuriya chipped in with 2 for 34 after a cameo with the bat.

Deccan: The batting has revolved around Adam Gilchrist, Herschelle Gibbs and Rohit Sharma so far. Gilchrist may have retired from international cricket but some of his leg-side sixes against Bangalore brought back memories of the assault against Sri Lanka in the 2007 World Cup final. Sharma and Gibbs have shown chemistry on the field, where they compete and feed off each other's success, and they've been able to contribute with the bat as well. The key bowlers for Deccan have been their new-ball operators: Edwards hustles the batsmen with pace and bounce while RP's found the swing that made him a threat during the World Twenty20 in South Africa. They've been backed up superbly by Pragyan Ohja, who's becoming adept at luring batsmen out of the crease and having them stumped.

Watch out for

Rohit v Harbhajan: Rohit's scored 88 runs off 62 balls in two games without being dismissed. He's thrived during the middle overs and scored 53 off 37 balls against the spinners. He clobbered Anil Kumble for three sixes in an over and will look to dominate Harbhajan in the same way.

Team news

Deccan have won two out of two games and have no reason to change a winning combination.

Deccan: 1 Adam Gilchrist (capt/wk), 2 Herschelle Gibbs, 3 VVS Laxman, 4 Rohit Sharma, 5 Scott Styris, 6 Venugopal Rao, 7 Ravi Teja, 8 Harmeet Singh, 9 Pragyan Ojha, 10 RP Singh, 11 Fidel Edwards.

Mumbai's team also has a settled look to it but the one change they could make is to replace medium-pacer Rohan Raje with Dhawal Kulkarni.

Mumbai: 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Sachin Tendulkar (capt), 3 Shikhar Dhawan, 4 JP Duminy, 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Abhishek Nayar, 7 Harbhajan Singh, 8 Zaheer Khan, 9 Pinal Shah (wk), 10 Dhawal Kulkarni/Rohan Raje, 11 Lasith Malinga.

Head-to-head record

Mumbai were ambushed by Gilchrist in their first match in 2008. Gilchrist smashed 109 off 47 balls to set up Deccan's ten-wicket victory. However, Deccan's top-order collapsed in the  second match  against Mumbai, slipping to a 25-run defeat in Hyderabad.

Quotes

"The whole approach has been positive, we have made some changes in the support staff and they have injected lot of enthusiasm and encouraged the players to enjoy there games. Players have responded well so far but its still so early in the tournament. All we can ask players is to hop in and commit and so far we have done that."

Adam Gilchrist pinpoints the change in Deccan since a dismal first season.

Yes it could be.

I am wary of HS/ZK combo more than anything else and they need to watch out for the 'X' factor Malinga.

DC needs to have a batting line up thus

Gilly/Gibbs/Teja/Rohit/VVS/Rao/Stryis with VVS as the floater in case of early wickets or have Styris move up after the 14th over in case 3-4 wickets fall.

Your batting line up is good now. VVS at #5 is right.. or could move to #7 if we dont lose many wickets and need someone to hit out.. Rao and Styris can slog better than VVS.

I would rate DC batting higher than MI and MI bowling higher than DC. DC fielding is much superior. This match should be even stevens... but in even games, the one who bowls relatively better wins!

A combination of Malinga and not so good batting in the middle by DC when VVS went for a stroke he should not gone for after Rohit got out to a very good stroke to be picked out in the deep cost them dearly.  Not so speak of Gibbs's untimely run-out and then Malinga bowling the rest out.

VVS got caught in a stroke that almost looked premeditated because its not a normal shot for him.

With Rohit, actually Gavaskar's statement was right- If the ground/boundary ropes were pushed back that would have been a safe stroke.

DC can still pull this back but bowling needs to work out well.

I know you do not want to mind the details, but it was out. Hit him very low too.  Would have pegged back middle and leg.

Clearly out IMO.  Those full dipping balls hit on line with the stumps are given out more often than not.  But that happens in cricket.  Things even out.  Nevertheless DC deserves to lose this match.

Bravo, Malinga keep Deccan to 168
25 April 2009, 12:34 pm

Deccan Chargers 168 for 9 (Gibbs 58, Bravo 3-34, Malinga 3-19) v Mumbai IndiansLive scorecard and ball-by-ball details

How they were out

Deccan Chargers lost their way after Herschelle Gibbs was dismissed for 58

Deccan Chargers' overseas batsmen, who failed to fire in unison last season, thrived in excellent batting conditions and put their team on course for a large total at Kingsmead. Mumbai Indians, however, fought back by taking three wickets in the space of seven balls just as Deccan were preparing to accelerate in the last five overs and restricted them to 168 for 9.

Herschelle Gibbs took charge of playing the steady innings at one end, while Adam Gilchrist and Dwayne Smith, the former Mumbai Indians player who replaced Scott Styris, attacked at the other. The result was spectacular and Deccan were 124 in the 13th over when Smith was bowled by Sanath Jayasuriya. Mumbai regained lost ground in the 15th over when Dwayne Bravo had Rohit Sharma and VVS Laxman caught at deep cover and midwicket but the crucial blow was struck in the next.

Gibbs drove Zaheer down the ground and was called back for the second by Venugopal Rao, who then changed his mind and left Gibbs to be run out on 58. Mumbai's experienced bowling attack seized the opportunity - Lasith Malinga picked up 3 for 19 with searing yorkers - and ensured that Deccan managed only 43 runs off the last seven overs for the loss of seven wickets.

The target of 169 was several runs short of what Deccan looked like setting when Gilchrist and Gibbs got going. Gilchrist took four balls to get his eye in against Lasith Malinga before lofting the fast bowler over the long-on boundary. He hit two more sixes, one an outside edge over third-man off Zaheer Khan and the other a thunderous hit over deep midwicket off Bravo. He was deft as well, opening the face to use the pace of Malinga and Harbhajan's quicker deliveries to pick the gaps behind square on the off side.

Gibbs was lucky at the start of the innings and collected two boundaries through edges past the wicketkeeper. However, he showed good touch by charging Zaheer and clubbing him past mid-off. Gibbs allowed Gilchrist to take the risks and after the left-hander was caught behind off Bravo for 35 off 20 balls, Deccan sent Smith in at No. 3 to keep the momentum going.

Smith punched his first ball, off Bravo, through cover point for four and took on Jayasuriya, slog-sweeping him for six and powering a drive to the extra-cover boundary. Deccan were 88 for 1 after 10 overs and the acceleration came two overs later when Dhawal Kulkarni was introduced into the attack. Gibbs smashed him for six over square leg and sliced him behind point while Smith launched him over midwicket to take 18 runs of the over.

Jayasuriya, however, made the vital breakthrough, dismissing Smith for 35 off 22 balls, and began Mumbai's fightback. Bravo and Malinga were miserly towards the death with the Sri Lankan fast bowler bowling a double-wicket maiden in the last over.

Ojha has been the suprise package . He has bowled much better then dart-thrower Bhajji . He should be given chances in the test team as well.
