Yorkshire must improve - McGrath

McGrath has taken over from the retired Darren Gough as captain

Yorkshire skipper Anthony McGrath has demanded they become more consistent this season in the Championship.

The Tykes open their County Championship campaign at current holders Durham on Wednesday.

"We need to be more consistent this season and that stems from confidence, focus and concentration," McGrath told BBC Radio Leeds.

"We have proven we can match anyone on our day and it's about now matching teams for a whole six months."

The Headingley outfit will travel to the Riverside in confident mood after beating Durham by 80 runs in the Friends Provident Trophy on Sunday.

McGrath added: "We've made huge strides over the last two years in one-day cricket and it's about time we starting reaching finals and competing on the big stage.

"We are eyeing up winning trophies this season, I'm sure all teams are though.

"It's a tough opener at Durham, they've been excellent in recent seasons.

"But you have to play them at some time, so it might as well be at the start.

"It will be a tough encounter, but we've had some success there in the past and I'm confident with the squad we have that we can match them and beat them."

BBC Radio Leeds has ball-by-ball commentary of every single Yorkshire game this season online at bbc.co.uk/leeds or bbc.co.uk/westyorkshire.
