Flute,

Why not be systematic and go by directors. Say you choose Tarantino first -- see his work (I like all of them) -- Reservoir Dogs, Desperado, Pulp Fiction, Jackie Brown..... Same for Oliver Stone, Scorcese, etc etc. If you feel like watching foreign movies, try some Fellini or Bergman. My favorites are La Strada for the former and Wild Strawberries for the latter. Then there is Kurosawa -- hard to name a single favorite there. I am sure Netflix will have some Satyajit Ray too -- buit I have not checked this.

Flute,
I think this maybe the thread you are looking for:
http://www.cricketvoice.com/cricketforum2/index.php?topic=1968.0

Mods - can you merge these the above thread and this current one, please... - so we have one place to look for. This is a good candidate for STICKY thread in ETC. section - so folks can add to this list as time goes by. So, you can enable the sticky on this.

Flute + other online renters in DG -
I am also thinking abt the Netflix account. I have been debating between Netflix and Blockbuster has something similar to netflix - did u evaluate that? Can you tell me some details on the pricing + program? Which one have you signed up for?

FL,

Your best friend feverpitch is the movie specialist. In his absence, here are my humble suggestions. It's by no means a systematic list. I've just listed a few I've seen in the last one year and loved, in no particular order of preference:

1. La Lengua de las mariposas (The Tongue of the Butterfly) - directed by Jose Luis Cuerda (great film about the Spanish civil war)
2. The Warrior  -  directed by Asif Kapadia (Irfan Khan never acted better in my opinion)
3. The Badge - directed by and starring Billy Bob Thornton (life in the Bayou Country)
4. Lonesome Dove - a TV series and an absolute must if you like westerns (starring Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones)
5. The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada - directed by Tommy Lee Jones and to me, the best movie of 2006.

fineleg, I actually stumbled upon this site.

http://www.cyberdealsinfo.com/deals/stores/product/DVD/531

Above site will give me $5 cash back for signing up with netflix & $5 for registering at their site. So, essentially, I use netflix for 2 weeks and then get $10. thats the plan anyway. We will have to see how it works. But, there is no risk either way. It is a 2 week trial anyway.

Also, on top of it, they offer cash back for blockbuster too. so, switch to blockbuster after 2 weeks and blockbuster gives 4 weeks trial.

Coming to review of netflix & blockbuster, I liked blockbuster better than netflix for 2 reasons.
a. Blockbuster site is more user friendly and easy to maintain your queue of movies
b. Here is a inside tip. Sign up for blockbuster and continue after the trial period. After they charge you $15 the first month, upgrade your membership to 8 movies per month. You will never get charged until the end of the month. Just before end of month, cancel your membership.

thanks for the link to the old thread

Three Burials is a very good movie...Barry Pepper is an excellent actor (sniper from Saving Private Ryan). I saw Rang De Basanti when I was in Abu Dhabi...first Bollywood movie in a long time. Pleasantly surprised. It was enjoyable. I am going to check out Babel today.

Oh yeah, I forgot Bheja Fry.

OSO is more a product than a film ... it is a good one time watch but that's about it. I think a large part of Chak De's success was due to the limited films of this genre being made in India ... else, it was largely a cliched sports flick. And that novelty factor has helped Goal too to rake in the moolah despite being a seriously poor film.

i saw meenaxi the other day, its MF Husain's 2nd movie

there's some pretty visuals there and the storyline is nice, it's worth a watch, a very different approach to film, of course the acting i thought was plodding but the art is very good as is the camera and colours on the screen

From Bollywood 2007

TZP
Johny Gaddar
Manorama Six Feet Under
Guru
Black Friday
Bheja Fry (non-stop dry humor)
Om Shanti Om (spoof-fest)
Chak De India! (jingoism  + overachieving girls from across the country + a wrongfully accused muslim coach
+ a theme song that is the new national anthem for indian sports = a winner!!)

Jab We Met should definitely be on this list - a great timepass movie - IMO, way way better than OSO !!!

Agree. I guess you watched on Sony yesterday night ;D
