Good movies - recommendations
« on: April 01, 2006, 01:24:14 AM »
Any English Movie Recommendations for Friday Night at the Theaters?
(Temporary thread - will delete or move it later).

I think some of the new movies running in theaters in USA are:
INSIDE MAN, ICE-AGE2 (cartoon, yes), (new)Pink Panther....

Any recommendations?

If you're renting on DVD, get " A History of Violence". Great movie! I assume you've seen Crash?

I haven't seen anything but Crash and City of God from your list. From what I have seen, Crash was one of the best movies of the year andrightfully won the Academy award, in my opinion. City of God is another great movie. Of late, I also liked The Libertine. Check it out at the theaters.

I dont prefer 'Violence' movies.
I like Comedy, Drama, Adventure, Slick-Action, Heist, good cartoons, romantic comedy etc.

I've seen Station Agent and liked it.

im going to suggest something really OLD, but my uncle coerced me into watching it, and it was a beauty:
The Bridge on the River Kwai

It is set in WW2 amongst British POWs, wonderfully made film.

colonel, that was exactly my feeling about the movie. Also, it doesnt show this false fairy tale BS about how there is no racism anymore etc which a lot of people are trying hard to assert. This way, people will relate to the characters and think, OK, now I understand how I sound when I say this.
BTW, there was at least one person who I thought represented me. Maybe a combination of two.

You're absolutely right. Take, for instance, the young policeman in the last scene. I like to think that I am not a racist. However, given my social conditioning about a single black man being a threat, who knows how I may have reacted if I had  a gun in my hand at that moment? In the end the man who spoke against racism ended up committing a murder based on no other stimulus but race.

BTW, check out American History X. This was the first film I saw when I first bought a DVD player after coming to the United States in 2001 ;D.  Also, my room mate Feverpitch and I saw Hustle and Flow the other day. I think you'll like it. It looks at the gansta rap phenomenon without trying to glorify it. I personally can't appreciate rap music (it's just a matter of taste and no comment intended on the music itself), but there is a rare human quality in the movie which made me like it. Even though I don't emotionally relate to the music, nor do I have much exposure to the predicaments of poor black people in the USA.

actually had the misfortune of only seeing half of 'V'. Went to watch Ice Age 2 ( ::) girls, what can you do, I liked the original Ice Age tho) and you know how these cinemas work, there is no one to check who goes into what cinema hall when once you pay and get in the main area. Went into 'V' thinking it was a 11:00 show but it had actually started at 10, so saw what remained of the movie. Was quite good, def. worth a watch. will write more about it once i go watch the whole thing.

inside man, now out in theatres a lot of political satire
the introduction is with the song chaiya chaiya in the background and the remaining song is played with the end credits, and the sikh guy in the movie is funny.

Got directed here by Fineleg from the Fearless/Foolish Thread on Langer....new movies that are worth watching. FYI, I am not a fan of loud movies...I like it when movies are subtle with symbolism. So if you think "Black" was a really good movie then my taste in movies may not appeal to you.

Sideways (A writer and his actor friend embark on a road-trip through California wine country before the actor get married)
Cinderella Man ( The story of a boxer who captured the imagination of the people struggling during the Depresseion)
Capote (An absolute gem of a movie by a director in his first feature film. The story of how a writer develop's a relationship with a murderer while researching the facts of the case)
Walk The Line ( A biopic on Johnny Cash's life that zones in on Cash's realtionship with June Carter)
Lila Says ( French movie about the relationship between an Arab immigrant teen and White girl - For those who really like artistic cinema.)

Slightly Older
Quills (About Marquis de Sade's days at a mental asylum. Geoffrey Rush at his best. Fun thing to do - compare the perfomance by Joaquin Phoenix in Walk The Line to his performance in Quills)
The Yes Men (Hillarous documentary on two men who impersonate WTO officals at  different settings.)

A special word on the Capote. I believe Philip Seymour Hoffman is the best actor in America so I am not going to say anything about his performance as Capote as I am likely to be biased. However, the portrayal of Perry Smith by Clifton Collins jr. is a masterpiece. This movie is worth watching for his performance alone.
