One of last year's finalists have already lost today to a side that underperformed in 2008, and Kevin Pietersen will be hoping that the script is similar in the day's second game. He made a start by winning the toss and opting for his Bangalore Royal Challengers, who finished a poor seventh in the inaugural season, to bat against his former Hampshire captain Shane Warne's Rajasthan Royals, the defending champions.
The match will be played on the same track as the season opener earlier today, when the teams found batting a little tricky. The pitch is expected to ease out over the day, but should provide the spinners with some assistance.
Bangalore, derided as a 'Test' team last year, have bolstered their batting with the inclusion of the hard-hitting Pietersen, Robin Uthappa and Jesse Ryder. Rajasthan lack two of the players pivotal to their title-winning run, Sohail Tanvir and Shane Watson, but have filled those slots with the highly rated Twenty20 specialists, Dimitri Mascarenhas and Tyron Henderson.
Much had been made of how local players would provide an edge but Bangalore have chosen to rest Jacques Kallis and Mark Boucher, though Dale Steyn has dashed across from Johannesburg - where he played Australia in the ODI on Friday - and will feature.
Both teams have been hit by the absence of Australians fast bowlers - Bangalore's Nathan Bracken is part of the national squad to take on Pakistan, while Shaun Tait misses the season due to Cricket Australia's concerns over his fitness.
