This will be my opening day line-up for the chargers

Gilly
Laxman
Gibbs
Teja
Rohit
Rao
Dwayne Smith
R.P. Singh
Ojha
Fidel Edwards
P. VijayaKumar

I know VVS at the top in 20-20 can be a liabilty but considering all factors and given the IPL is held in SA and the conditions there it is a good bet.  Give it 2-3 games and see how it goes with this line up and then make changes as necessary.

Sorry.. "can be"? make that "is".

With all due respect to the wonders he has done in test cricket, he really does not belong in this format.

I agree at the international level when you are considering the top 30 players in the country.  But in the IPL when they need 7 local players I will have him in my team atleast to begin the season with and see where this goes.   That is where I think we disagree.  Also remember in the 4-5 games he played last year I think he held fort to justify his place in the 11.

I won't get VVS to open. He should probably come in at No4 and hold things together if there is a collapse ...else, he should let others come in above him. What DC and a lot of other teams need is someone like a Swapnil Asnodkar at the top - give him the license to go out and hit with the knowledge that there are good batsmen to follow. I think Ravi Teja may not be a bad idea for that.

You guys are under-estimating Laxman; he can easily score at a 100 SR. And who'll replace him--Arjun Yadav?

See the 7 locals don't have to be all from AP/Hyderabad.. only the jrs have to.

Having said that, why not develop a player who has the potential and will deliver later. It looks like we are trying to fit VVS in .. rather than do what is right for the team.

wn, other than the fact that anyone over 25 is not eligible for your teams, we're not trying to fit laxman in as much as trying to figure out where he will bat best! ap or no ap, laxman certainly makes it among 56 players from india who can best excel in this game

He should play in as opener with Gilly  ;) .
I have never doubted laxmans strokes. The overall dexterity of innovation in strokes may however may not be same as other peers per say.
If you don;t send him as opener, There would be no othe rplace to send him, while the Floater word seems impressive. But we have seen what happened with RD when he became floater.
The early Powerplays may presnet Laxman more scoring options than later in the game. This is my read.
Gibbs can come as one down.
Laxmans TT SR is 117 so far. He has hit 4 sixes in the 86 ODI's played. If he fits in team, IMO has to open. There are anyway not many sixes in first four overs (sans VS batting). Nobody would however doubt VVS's ground hitting capability.

Gilly+Gibbs would make an awesome opening combo
After openers , Who is there ? Sharma has not played for a while. Teja needs to be tested at big stage.
Probably Roa and Smith

I think Rao did a decent job at No.5 and 6 last year.  He now has a few years at the FC level and is an experienced player.  But my issue with Gilly/Gibbs opening is all fire power up top.  So spread it across.  Have Gilly/VVS open or Gilly/Teja then Gibbs, VVS, Rohit and Rao which is not bad either.  Smith is decent at 7 and when Symonds comes back for the back end of the schedule things will look better for DC.

Lehmann counting on Gilchrist and Laxman

Ajay S Shankar

Deccan Chargers are banking on the experience of Adam Gilchrist and the knowledge of VVS Laxman, who was replaced as captain by Gilchrist after the first IPL, to finish "a lot higher" than their bottom spot in 2008. Darren Lehmann, the team's new coach, also said the side was let down by their bowling and fielding last year and that the second IPL starting on Saturday would be a personal challenge.

"Adam Gilchrist is the captain and he is very experienced," Lehmann told Cricinfo. "But VVS Laxman is an important player for us, too. He has got a wealth of experience, and with that knowledge, we are hoping to make some inroads there."

Deccan started last season as favourites after topping their player purchase cap of US$5 million by signing up explosive batsmen like Gilchrist, Andrew Symonds, Herschelle Gibbs, Shahid Afridi and Rohit Sharma, but disintegrated as the IPL progressed. This time, they have begun on a positive note by winning a warm-up game at the SuperSport Park in Centurion on Monday against Titans by six wickets. Scott Styris, their New Zealand signing, took three for 10 to help dismiss Titans for 99 and scored an unbeaten 36 to wrap up a six-wicket win in 11 overs.

Deccan will open their IPL campaign in Cape Town on Sunday against Kolkata Knight Riders and Lehmann said he wouldn't go "too in-depth" into the team's gameplan. "What I can say is that this time, we are going to play with real passion, play smart, and obviously play better than last year," Lehmann said. "All in all, I thought we batted well last year but our fielding and bowling probably let us down, so that's one area we are certainly going to pick up on."

In fact, nothing went right for Deccan last time even outside the field, starting with Laxman's wrist injury which ruled him out of most of that IPL. A few months later, the team controversially replaced Laxman with Gilchrist as part of a management overhaul that also had Lehmann taking the palce of Robin Singh as coach.

Laxman, who will leave for South Africa on Wednesday night, has since staged a magnificent comeback, scoring 956 runs in 12 Tests at an average of 56.23 with two centuries -- one each against Australia and New Zealand -- and six half-centuries.

Then again, just before the second player auction this February, the team also lost Tim Wright, its chief executive officer, over an apparent difference of opinion over the former IMG official's role in the franchise's management structure.

"There have been a lot of things said but at the end of the day, we just got to perform on the field and that's all we will be trying to do," Lehmann said. "Things just didn't go the team's way; they didn't play very well, and the simple fact is we've got to improve that this year. We know that as a team, and we will be doing our utmost to do that this year. In Twenty20, everything needs to come together at the same time. We need to field very well, bowl really smartly and also make an effort. These are things we are trying to improve. It's a good challenge."

Lehmann said the short preparation time available for this IPL would not be a problem because most of his players have been playing international cricket through the year - Gibbs will join the team after the one-day series between South Africa and Australia ends on April 17.

"That's not a worry," he said. "We just need to get together and get our plans in place on where to go. Besides, most teams don't have a long preparation period anyway this year because of the move to South Africa so everyone is on the same boat. So the idea is to move as quick as you can, and as best as you can."

Deccan, however, will be have the services of Symonds only for the last two weeks of this IPL after the Australia allrounder was named in the national one-day squad for the series against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi from April 22-May 7. But Lehmann hopes that the team's new signings - Dwayne Smith and Fidel Edwards - will contribute to some early wins. Edwards took two wickets in Monday's warm-up game.

"Edwards has got explosive pace that's one thing you need for a Twenty20 start," Lehmann said. "We expect him to play really well for us and get involved in some early wins with some early wickets. Dwayne Smith is an explosive batsman and a handy allrounder. We have got some depth there, which is really good, and we are looking forward to some inputs from their side as well."

Lehmann also said that his team would be able to adapt to South African conditions better because he, Gilchrist and Laxman have played there before and that experience would work to the team's advantage. Asked where he hoped his team would finish this time, Lehmann said: "Hopefully, a lot higher than last year."

Styris strikes form for Deccan ChargersTuesday 14, April 2009

Scott Styris top-scored for Deccan Chargers after bowling an excellent spell.

Centurion: Scott Styris struck form to make a telling impact on Deccan Chargers’ six-wicket win over Nashua Titans in a practice game at the SuperSport Park on Monday. It set the ball rolling for the team that finished last in the inaugural DLF-Indian Premier League season but is hoping to realise its potential this time.

Electing to field, Chargers bundled out Titans for 99 in 20 overs. Styris returned figures of three for 10 runs in his four overs while left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, Harmeet Singh and West Indian Fidel Edwards took two wickets each.

Styris top-scored with an unbeaten 36 to guide the side home. Rohit Sharma was the next best, contributing 26 as the Titans sank without a trace in just 11 overs.

Scores: Nashua Titans 99 in 20 overs (Piere Joubert 19 not out, Heino Kuhn 19, Scott Styris three for 10,  Ojha two for 16, Harmeet Singh two for 12, Fidel Edwards two for 15) lost to Deccan Chargers 100 for four in 11 overs (Scott Styris 36 not out, Rohit Sharma 26).

Deccan Chargers plays Kolkata Knight Riders in its first match against on Sunday. Knight Riders’ in-form Cheteshwar Pujara hurt his left knee during a warm up match in Bloemfontein.

In Monday’s practice match, Sourav Ganguly XI beat Brendon McCullum XI by seven wickets. McCullum XI scored 140 for six wickets in 20 overs, Aakash Chopra scoring a half-century. In reply, Morne van Wyk Sourav scored a half-century as Sourav XI made 143 for three.

Meanwhile, the team’s principal owner Shah Rukh Khan will be reaching Cape Town on Tuesday and will meet the squad on Wednesday when the Knights arrive there.

Rohit hits form in tour game

April 15th, 2009

By Our Correspondent

Centurion, April 14: Deccan Chargers batsman Rohit Sharma continued his last year’s form as he smashed a whirlwind 85 not out in a practice game at the SuperSport Park in Centurion, South Africa, on Tuesday.

Rohit XI scored a comfortable win over Styris XI as the Chargers played their second successive practice game ahead of the IPL-2 which begins on April 18.

Batting first, Rohit XI piled 180 for 5 in their allotted 20 overs. Captain Rohit Sharma struck the ball hard, smacking eight boundaries and five sixes in his 44-ball knock.

Rohit was well-supported by West Indian allrounder Dwayne Smith, who chipped in with 36, which included two boundaries and a six. In the opposite camp, Styris waged a lone battle with a 28 that was not sufficient to guide his team through.

Brief scores: Rohit XI 180 for 5 in 20 overs (Rohit Sharma 85 n.o, Dwayne Smith 36, Shoaib 22 n.o, Chamara Silva 21, Chaminda Vaas 3-0-19-2, Pragyan Ojha 3-0-17-1, Harmeet Singh 4-0-31-1) bt Styris XI 134 all out in 20 overs (Scot Styris 28, Adam Gilchrist 20, Arjun Yadav 20, Y. Venugopala Rao 20, Chamara Silva 3-0-11-3, R.P. Singh 4-0-18-2, P. Vijaykumar 4-0-25-2, Dwyane Smith 4-0-37-1).

Mood upbeat in Deccan Chargers camp

HYDERABAD: A new captain (Adam Gilchrist), a new coach (Darren Lehmann), a new logo and even a new kit! But the big question is will there also be a new script for Deccan Chargers in the Indian Premier League’s second edition? Will the team’s big guns boom in South Africa?

The players believe that it is time to forget past performances in the IPL (two wins from 14 games) and look ahead with a positive frame of mind.

Change of guard

There is not even a murmur about the change of guard at the top — from V.V.S. Laxman to Adam Gilchrist.

Rohit Sharma, vice-captain of Deccan Chargers, who along with assistant coach Kanwaljit Singh, monitored the five-day training session in Hyderabad says that last year, the team did not play as badly as the results might indicate.

“There were many close encounters and it was the bowling which was a slight handicap. Now, the presence of West Indian Fidel Edwards should add sting to the pace attack which also has Chaminda Vaas, R.P. Singh, D. Kalyankrishna, P. Vijaykumar and S.M. Shoaib.

“And left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha, after having played for India, should be more difficult to handle,” he said.

No home advantage

“Playing in South Africa will be the same for every team since there will be no home advantage. And, having played there in the World Twenty20 Championship, I know what people expect from me.

“And, as a team too, we are all geared up for the challenge,” Rohit added.

Assistant coach Kanwaljit Singh also feels that there is no point in looking back.

“This team was and is capable of stunning the best. Remember that we beat two of the best teams last year — Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings.

“Somehow we failed to click in crunch games later on. This time we are confident of making amends,” he said.

Rohit doesn’t feel that the change in captaincy will be an issue.

“When we enter the field, the only objective is to win the match. We have to play to our potential and then everything will fall in place,” he said.

Big bonus

He hopes that Herschelle Gibbs (167 runs at 18.55 last time) should relish playing in front of his home crowd and this should be a big bonus for the team.

And if Adam Gilchrist strikes form, he will be unstoppable. Despite the fact that Shahid Afridi will be absent and Andrew Symonds will join the team only in the last two weeks because of his national commitments, the mood in the Deccan Chargers camp is upbeat.

Confident

“We are confident of writing a new chapter in this edition,” said Rohit.

Rohit is the VC.. wow
Yes that was announced a while back.  Actually VVS is the one that put forth his case when he was drafted.  A smart move by DC managment on giving the responsibility to a up and coming player.  It is a wise investment into the future provided Rohit can do justice to his amazing talent he showed in the previous version of the IPL.

City turns IPL battleground
April 23rd, 2009

By Our Correspondent

The IPL teams may be battling it out in South Africa, but Hyderabad too is turning into a war zone of sorts. In a city like ours that houses a large number of young professionals from other states, the IPL match screenings in lounges and pubs in the city are a test of team loyalties.
With many youngsters torn between their love for their home teams and the wrath of the local crowd that roots for apna Deccan Chargers, the match sessions almost always end up in verbal battles and mini wars.
When Gautam N., an IT professional headed for a pub in the city to catch the Deccan Chargers match, he hardly expected to face a group of fanatic Knight Rider fans.
“I soon realised that I am the only Deccan Chargers supporter in the 20-odd group of Bengalis who were cheering every time Shah Rukh Khan or the KKRs were shown on screen. I was forced to stay put. But once the game started and the wickets started falling, I was the one who was having fun. Everyone was so mad at me. I was cheering so loudly and enthusiastically that they were planning to throw me out from the place! It was so much fun to taunt all those guys once the Deccan Chargers won.”
These “viewing wars” are the best part about the IPL, feels Jeena, an IT professional, says, “It was a lot of fun hurling abuses at each other and pulling each other’s legs during the matches. I think games become more interesting when there are supporters from both teams in the crowd. It is only then the match gets more exciting. It was almost like we were back in school booing each other, and fighting for our house teams.”
But the most tricky scenario is when your home team is pitted against the Hyderabadi pride, Deccan Chargers. Saikat Bose, a young professional says, “If my home team is playing I’ll support them. But if Deccan Chargers is playing against teams other than my own, I’m all for them.”
Competitive spirit runs so high amongst the fans that things can get interesting. “I’d never admit to supporting the DC team in front of friends from my home town. I’ll support them secretly and wait for another show down between the two teams, so that I can taunt them when DC wins,” he quips.

Gilly’s daughter ‘bundle of joy’
April 23rd, 2009
By Our Correspondent

Adam Gilchrist is here with his family. His daughter Anne is a bundle of joy and can’t get enough of the swimming pool. It is her second visit here and Mel Gilchrist says the kids love South Africa as it is very much like home.
They also enjoy the English food especially the salads. For 7-year-old Harry it is his fourth visit here. He was just two months when he came here during Australia’s tour of 2002.
Mel who is enjoying every minute of her stay here sees no difference in travelling with the Chargers from the Australian national team. “They are all very friendly and it has been fun,” she signed off.

A fresh buzz around the Chargers in IPL-2
April 23rd, 2009
By R. Mohan

There is a bit of a buzz about Deccan Chargers in IPL-2. The bottom rungers of the opening season came roaring to form in the opening weekend. “It’s a good start,” said Herschelle Gibbs after Game 1. “We’ve got a new captain, a new manager and some new ideas. The team spirit is really good.”
In fact, one of the points of worry in Season 1 had been the opener’s form. When is Gibbs going to score, a worried member of the team asked recently. Having left his personal worries behind and having found his batting feet against Australia in the ODIs, the Cape coloured carried on with his good form to anchor the win that was psychologically important for his IPL team.
With Gilchrist at the helm, a whole load of fresh energy has come into the team. So good a motivator is the former Australian vice-captain who made history for his team when he led them to victory in a Test in Nagpur when Ponting was injured.
Australian cricket had conquered a frontier that day five years ago. Among the men who made that possible was Shane Warne with whom Gilly never saw eye to eye. The leggie envied the Test captaincy that was never to be his. But the champs always gelled in the team cause, which was another reason why Australia was such a great side when they were around.
If not for the sentimentality surrounding that stylish batsman and gentleman cricketer V.V.S. Laxman from the team’s hometown, Gilchrist would have been the choice to head the Chargers from the very start.
Having just retired from international cricket Gilly may then have found some motivation in leadership in IPL-1. The man who really got the Chargers charged up early was the bubbly Fidel Edwards. He gave Chris Gayle, a stare that may have melted anyone else. Gayle did not quite appreciate the gesture and seemed to say so to his colleague from the Caribbean but opponent in IPL.

Just saw the replay..
1. This is a good fielding unit. Gibbs and Sharma are both very good. Heck VVS is diving !!
2. Top 3 bowlers are good and the top order is excellentS
3. middle order looks shaky to me.. should move Teja or Venu to #3 and bring VVS down to 6. Once Symmo comes, replace Styris with him
4. bowlers #4 and 5 are problem areas. Donno how that can be fixed.
5. Gilly is leading from the front and has instilled a pride in the side... which is an awesome sight
