KXIP Ka Twenty-2019 April, 2009 | KXIP NEWS SERVICE
How do you see the team shaping up for the challenge ahead?Irfan Pathan: As far as I can see, there are quite a few players who are back from injury and that’s good to see. Brett Lee is back and that’s good for the team… Sree’s is an unfortunate situation for the team and we will miss him. But Yuvraj is in great form and I’m positive about my batting too… and then there’s Shaun Marsh of course… so it’s looking good.
I have also had some feedback from other players and that looks positive too. Ajitesh Argal seems to be in good form, Piyush Chawla is raring to go and the whole team in general looks upbeat.
You will compete against some of your Aussie friends & team-mates... your thoughts on this?Burt Cockley: I’m looking forward to playing against my NSW team-mates and the other Aussies in the tournament. I’m sure there will be lots of banter but fierce rivalry amongst us. Importantly, I need to have the confidence to put myself out there and play the best cricket I can.
What are your expectations from the season? Can KXIP win the title?Simon Katich: Given the unexpected nature of 20/20 cricket all the teams will be expecting to perform well. The key will be getting on a roll like we did last year as the games are close together and the confidence builds quickly when you are winning. I believe we can win it!
How is your preparation coming along for the upcoming season?Yash Gandhi: I am working hard on my fitness, which I know is important. I am going to the gym, practising in the nets and am already following a programme given to me to improve all aspects of my game.
What are the advantages of a tournament like the IPL? How has it helped you to evolve as a player?Ranadeb Bose: It’s fantastic… you are rubbing shoulders with the current legends of cricket. You are playing with them and your game is bound to improve. Not everyone gets this chance. In the domestic circuit, you get to play with some, but this is huge. The opportunity to gain experience with Indian national players and other national players is tremendous.
Who according to you are the players to watch out for?Kumar Sangakkara: Most of those who performed last year are the ones to watch out for. Yuvraj, Mahela, Shaun Marsh and James Hopes who had a great season last year are the ones who can shine again. I also expect some of the young Indian players to make an impact and come into their own. After all, last year’s IPL did generate some stars who are now international players.
What are your thoughts on the IPL in general?Patrick Farhart: I think the IPL is a magnificent concept and an outstanding competition. The tournament organisers should be commended for their efforts to keep the tournament alive this season under very difficult circumstances. Advantages are that you've got the best players in the world having to execute their skills under enormous pressure in one competition. Disadvantages are the tight schedule, which will involve lots of travel.
What will you miss about the IPL not being in India?S Sreesanth: A lot of stuff… most of all the crowds, the flags and the atmosphere. But I’m sure that in South Africa thanks to all the Indians there we will have a great time. I still remember the India-Australia game in Durban… there were so many Indian supporters… I don’t remember seeing so many Indian flags outside India ever! So we are in the right place and SA is going to rock… India is coming to South Africa! The change of venue is actually going to be good… it’s always getting better. The best is yet to come.
What has been the one aspect of the IPL you are looking forward to?Taruwar Kohli: I am really looking forward to batting with Yuvraj… he has been looking over me for some time now and I would like to play alongside him.
Is revenge against the Chennai Super Kings on your mind?We have realized the mistakes we made in last year’s semi-final. We were disappointed at the loss, but we felt good that our overall efforts were appreciated. Mistakes cost us the match and this time, we will concentrate and try to go all the way.
Most of the players don’t play as many T20 matches through a season. How do you help them prepare for a different mindset?Tom Moody: Players are more adapting today, its not very difficult. Every player has to be on the same page and has to have the same goal as the team. That is the crucial aspect. We will also be conducting a training camp prior to the start of the season.
What are KXIP’s plans to nurture talent at the grassroot level? What are your hopes from the local youngsters that you have now in the team?Tom Moody: We are working on a strategic plan – it is not final yet, but we are working towards ensuring proper promotion of the local talent since there is a good supply available. We, of course, judge the skill level of a player and make sure they are fit. Cricketers today have to be athletes. They must have character and possess good mental strength.
How does it affect the team’s plans now that the tournament has moved to South Africa?Irfan Pathan: It’s totally different… the tactics will change since the wickets are different. We will need good fast bowlers and six batsmen. Thankfully, we have some Australians and players like Sangakkara who can handle any kind of pitch and attack. I’m personally confident since my first 1st-class hundred was in South Africa… we are in a way lucky with the players we have… the team will be prepared for all challenges.
Which are the teams that pose the biggest threats for KXIP?Mahela Jayawardene: Every team is a threat! On their day, any team can be a handful. Remember, all teams have some very good international players and we need to treat all teams with respect.
Irfan Pathan: All the teams are strong and will take some beating! But I am looking forward to playing Mumbai… We will really have to play well to beat them.
Burt Cockley: The Rajasthan Royals will be the team to watch given their awesome performance last year. Chennai Super Kings has a good line up so will also be a team to watch.
Simon Katich: The biggest threats are definitely Chennai and Rajasthan. Any team led by Shane Warne will always be very competitive and dangerous.
Is revenge against the Chennai Super Kings on your mind?
Kumar Sangakkara: We’ll make plans, we’ll try and stick to them too… beyond that, we can’t do too much.
Playing with the likes of Brett Lee... are you looking forward to it?Ranadeb Bose: Yes! I am looking forward to learning from him. His aggression, body language, his fitness… he’s 32 and he still has a lot to offer. I am keen to know about all aspects of his game including training. Irfan Pathan is a good friend and I am also looking to learn a lot from him
What changes in the game do you see that you think are a result of the T20 format gaining in popularity?Tom Moody: We have definitely seen changes over the last few years… batsmen are prepared to be more flamboyant. Shots like the upper cut, which were not even seen in one-day cricket are now being played in Test matches. Batsmen are prepared to take more risks to score their runs. They don’t mind getting creative to score runs.
