Overheard...Ness Wadia having a heart - heart with Coach Tom Moody
07 April, 2009 | NESS WADIA

I’m really excited for Season 2 Tom, we are just about to start our Coaching Camp at Port Elizabeth…so all geared up ?
We have been gearing up for the second edition of IPL for some time now. A lot of time has gone in preparation and we have also spent time searching for new talent. The KXIP Cup for searching new talent and Open Trials went very well earlier so the team has good talent.

Yes, its our focus at Kings XI Punjab to nurture talent at the grassroots level and thus the Open Trials in the Catchment area and the KXIP Cup in Jan and Feb 2009. What are you looking for as far as the selected players are concerned?
We have a strategic plan – it is not final yet, but we are working towards ensuring proper promotion of the local talent since there is a good supply available in our region. We, of course, judge the skill level of a player and make sure they are fit. Cricketers today have to be athletes which entails them being mentally and physically prepared. They must have character and possess good mental strength.

How did you go about selecting new players for the team?
The criterion for their selection has been their skill based mainly. We have also monitored players’ physical capabilities but a specific focus on T20 all round skills.

The way I see it , most of the players don’t play as many T20 matches through a season. You and your team have to help them prepare for a different mindset.
Players are more adaptable these days which they have to be through the different forms the game. All players were given areas that they needed to develop in the off season after last IPL season, these areas varied from skill to physical goals. Im hoping the training camp prior to the start of the season will allow us to fine turn our strategy for the tournament and look at continuing to challenge the playing group with their game.

Some of our key players like Yuvraj are coming off a hectic international schedule. It will be important to motivate them right?
Considering the size and the magnitude of last season, I don’t think there needs to be too much of motivating we have to do. Whether it is an established player or an emerging one, it is a great platform for them. Stars want to perform on the big stage and that is a motivation in itself.!

Yeah of that Im sure . The T-20 format has had a definite impact on the way cricket is now played. So many changes….
We have definitely seen changes over the last few years… batsmen are prepared to be more flamboyant. Shots like the upper cut, which were not even seen in one-day cricket are now being played in Test matches. Batsmen are prepared to take more risks to score their runs and put the bowler under pressure. They are prepared to be creative to score runs.

What do you feel about the security now that the IPL has been shifted?
You are right Ness, Security is of paramount importance. We want a safe environment in general and cricket is no different. I have 100 percent confidence in the people running the IPL. I am sure the officials will work to implement the necessary security measures which will meet all standards.

There has been very little time for the team to come together and gel as a unit before the tournament starts. What are your plans to address this?
The 8 day camp being conducted before the season begins will be a major bonding and training opportunity. A number of our international players will join us at various times during this period because of their commitments with their various countries. We are lucky to have some quality characters in our group so gelling is made very easy given their will to create a good environment.

Last season, we reached the semis. Do you think we can get it this time around?
We feel that going into this season we are one of the stronger teams though very mindful it’s a strong competition. Our consistency last year was commendable... we had a bad semi-final with the bat which proved to be very costly. We were generally very consistent and that is an important ingredient for success in any tournament. We feel confident of our chances this year, we are not here to just make up the numbers we would like to go one further in IPL Season 2 .

Tom…Lets go out there and Win the Cup! thats our Goal…

KXIP News Service was discovered at this point and asked to leave ..Sorry Guys but We are in Port Elizabeth and will bring you more soon ...stay tuned!

A dressing room full of great characters!
06 April, 2009 | SIMON KATICH

The IPL offers amazing opportunities to young players. Playing in an international tournament against and even with the best players in the world is an incredible experience. Personally, I can say it gave me a huge boost last year to get back to playing at an international level before I made it back into the Australian team.

Having played just two games at the IPL last season, this year I am looking forward to playing more for KXIP. The team is shaping up well and the great start last year will hold us in good stead to go even better this year. Our dressing room is full of great characters and amazing players from all over the world. We have a really good bunch of people involved and it was great to become team-mates with guys that are normally fierce competitors. I am sure we’ll have the same feeling amongst the group again and have plenty of fun playing together.

The key to winning this year will be getting on a roll like we did last year as the games are close together and confidence builds quickly when you are winning. There are so many good players in the team and if our bowlers like Brett Lee are in form, there’s plenty of damage to be done in South Africa.

The biggest threats are Chennai & Rajasthan. Any team led by Shane Warne can be very dangerous but of course it would be nice to turn the tables on Chennai this year!

Yusuf Abdulla, South African left arm seamer joins KXIP Squad
08 April, 2009 | KXIP NEWS SERVICE

Kings XI Punjab, the young dynamic Indian Premier League team, today announced the addition of Yusuf Abdulla - a left arm fast medium bowler to their squad and David Nosworthy, head coach of South African first class team The Lions based at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg who joins the coaching team at KXIP.

Held and promoted by a consortium which includes, industrialists Mohit Burman, Karan Paul, Ness Wadia and leading Indian actor Preity Zinta also confirmed Port Elizabeth as its base camp for 8 days in South Africa. The camp will commence from April 06 with a squad of 27 players.

Yusuf Abdulla is currently one of South Africa's leading domestic-competition bowlers and has also played first class cricket. He recently represented South Africa in a T20 match against Australia. Dave Nosworthy, a high performance team manager will work with Tom Moody and will be part of the coaching camp in South Africa. His experience of coaching the local The Lions Cricket team will be invaluable in the teams’ preparation.

Kings XI Punjab has chosen Port Elizabeth also known as “The Friendly City”, as its camp city. Port Elizabeth provides the perfect setting for the team to have net practices at the main test ground. In addition, the team will be able to use the middle wickets of the University field, which will give them a flavour of how the upcoming season will unfold. Known as the 5 minute city, Port Elizabeth offers great accommodation, which incidentally is one of the best in South Africa.

Ness Wadia, Co – Promoter, Kings XI Punjab, said, “We are excited to have Yusuf as part of our squad, as he will bring with him the local knowledge and experience of playing in a T20 format in South Africa.” “We believe Port Elizabeth is the right choice for our team to set up the camp as the city has some brilliant facilities that cricketers look forward to. The city is home to a quality South Africa T20 team, which will give our players a chance to, not only, have practice matches, but also have net practice sessions against their bowlers,” added Ness Wadia.

Commenting on the upcoming camp at Port Elizabeth in South Africa, Tom Moody, Coach, Kings XI Punjab, said “I am excited about starting our preparation with the Kings XI Punjab Squad in Port Elizabeth, a city that is logistically a great venue for our training. We are positioned well weather wise, as there is plenty of sunshine in Port Elizabeth, that will help our players get familiarized with South Africa and its conditions for the upcoming season 2. The 8 day camp is where 27 players will practice and go through their paces and stake a claim for the final touring squad for 2009 IPL.”

Kings XI Punjab favorites to win IPL title: Yuvraj
13 Apr 2009, 1751 hrs IST, PTI

MUMBAI: Asserting that his team was a strong contender to win the second season IPL title, Kings XI Punjab skipper Yuvraj Singh said he was

banking upon his batting line-up and was looking to enhance his performance in the cash-rich Twenty20 league.

"We have a good team for this season. We have good batting line-up with players like Shaun Marsh, (Kumar) Sangakkara and (Mahela) Jayawardene. One thing we missed a good pacer Sreesanth but we have enough bowling options," the left-hand batsman said after launching his own merchandise with a brand called "Yuvi" on Monday.

Admitting that his performance was not so good during the New Zealand tour, the stylish left hander said he was not happy with his performance but was confident to do well in the coming matches.

"I could have done better but could not. I will try to make amends in the coming matches. Besides I will try to play a good captaincy role in South Africa which is my favorite place," the flamboyant middle-order batsman said.

Refusing to comment on Kolkata Knight Riders' multiple-captain theory, Yuvraj said, "Every team has own rule and I do not want to comment on this. But we have no such plans."

Launching his own merchandise, the Kings XI Punjab captain said, "I am delighted to have Cool Maal approach my agency Cornerstone to launch their first line of merchandise. There are a lot of fans to whom this will be a token of love and gratitude from my end."

Kings XI Punjab hopes to break even next year
11 Apr 2009, 2014 hrs IST, PTI

MUMBAI: IPL franchise outfit Kings XI Punjab expect to break even in 2010 after this year's Twenty20 event could not be held at home and was shifted to South Africa, one of its co-owners said on Saturday.

"We hoped to break even this year before the tournament was shifted to South Africa. By next year we will be very close to break even," industrialist Mohit Burman told a media conference at a function organised to announce team's title sponsors Emirates.

Besides Emirates, with whom they have tied up multi-million dollar deal for three years, Kings XI have also tied-up with Gulf Oil, Nimbooz, Netlinkblue, Reebok, Springbok International, Royal Challenge, Dabur Glucose D and Orbit.

The number of sponsors for Kings XI this year is more than what they had got last year which was the then highest among all the eight franchise outfits, it was announced.

But getting these sponsors on board this year was a struggle because of the economic downturn, admitted Bollywood actress and co-owner Preity Zinta.

"A lot of deals we were planning got affected. We were close to signing up a few sponsors which got canceled as the event was shifted to South Africa. However, as they say everything happens for the best and we have some top brands on our T-shirt", she said.

Kings XI lose to Chevrolet Warriors in warm-up match

Kings XI Punjab failed to score a stiff 19 off the last over as they lost to Chevrolet Warriors by 10 runs in their warm-up Twenty20 match ahead of the Indian Premier League second season.

Set a target of 152 to win, Kings XI Punjab could only manage 141 for six as they lost wickets at regular intervals at Sahara Oval St George's Park on Tuesday.

Australian Simon Katich (12), Sri Lankan Kumar Sangakkara (16) and Englishman Ravi Bopara (24) all got starts before losing their wickets.

It was left to middle order batsman Taruwar Kohli to take the charge and he brought Kings XI close to the target with 19 runs needing off the last over off Warren Bell.

Kohli's partner at the other end Karan Goel raised hopes for Kings XI when he smashed a straight six from the first ball of ultimate over to leave the equation at 13 off the remaining five deliveries.

However, destiny had other things in stored as Kohli was run out by wicketkeeper Davy Jacobs two balls later, and Bell was bang on his task, conceding only two singles in the remaining three deliveries to give see his side home.

Kohli made 36 runs off 26 deliveries which was studded with two fours and equal number of sixes.

For Chevrolet Warriors, pacer Bell was the most successful bowler, scalping the wickets of Katich and Bopara for 22 runs while Jon-Jon Smuts took the wicket of dangerous Sangakkara.

Earlier, VRV Singh picked four for 24 to restrict the Warriors to 151 for five after the South African side were asked to bat first with Colin Ingram hitting an unbeaten half-century (57).

Shoddy fielding was the order of the day for Kings XI as they dropped as many as five catches.

The Warriors were quick to capitalise on the errors and Ingram played some delightful strokes en route his 57-run innings, although he was lucky to have survived after being bowled off a no-ball by Vikramjit Malik.

He faced 43 balls and stroked five fours and two sixes in his innings.

KXIP Ka Twenty-20
19 April, 2009 | KXIP NEWS SERVICE

How do you see the team shaping up for the challenge ahead?
Irfan Pathan: As far as I can see, there are quite a few players who are back from injury and that’s good to see. Brett Lee is back and that’s good for the team… Sree’s is an unfortunate situation for the team and we will miss him. But Yuvraj is in great form and I’m positive about my batting too… and then there’s Shaun Marsh of course… so it’s looking good.

I have also had some feedback from other players and that looks positive too. Ajitesh Argal seems to be in good form, Piyush Chawla is raring to go and the whole team in general looks upbeat.

You will compete against some of your Aussie friends & team-mates... your thoughts on this?
Burt Cockley: I’m looking forward to playing against my NSW team-mates and the other Aussies in the tournament. I’m sure there will be lots of banter but fierce rivalry amongst us. Importantly, I need to have the confidence to put myself out there and play the best cricket I can.

What are your expectations from the season? Can KXIP win the title?
Simon Katich: Given the unexpected nature of 20/20 cricket all the teams will be expecting to perform well. The key will be getting on a roll like we did last year as the games are close together and the confidence builds quickly when you are winning. I believe we can win it!

How is your preparation coming along for the upcoming season?
Yash Gandhi: I am working hard on my fitness, which I know is important. I am going to the gym, practising in the nets and am already following a programme given to me to improve all aspects of my game.

What are the advantages of a tournament like the IPL? How has it helped you to evolve as a player?
Ranadeb Bose: It’s fantastic… you are rubbing shoulders with the current legends of cricket. You are playing with them and your game is bound to improve. Not everyone gets this chance. In the domestic circuit, you get to play with some, but this is huge. The opportunity to gain experience with Indian national players and other national players is tremendous.

Who according to you are the players to watch out for?
Kumar Sangakkara: Most of those who performed last year are the ones to watch out for. Yuvraj, Mahela, Shaun Marsh and James Hopes who had a great season last year are the ones who can shine again. I also expect some of the young Indian players to make an impact and come into their own. After all, last year’s IPL did generate some stars who are now international players.

What are your thoughts on the IPL in general?
Patrick Farhart: I think the IPL is a magnificent concept and an outstanding competition. The tournament organisers should be commended for their efforts to keep the tournament alive this season under very difficult circumstances. Advantages are that you've got the best players in the world having to execute their skills under enormous pressure in one competition. Disadvantages are the tight schedule, which will involve lots of travel.

What will you miss about the IPL not being in India?
S Sreesanth: A lot of stuff… most of all the crowds, the flags and the atmosphere. But I’m sure that in South Africa thanks to all the Indians there we will have a great time. I still remember the India-Australia game in Durban… there were so many Indian supporters… I don’t remember seeing so many Indian flags outside India ever! So we are in the right place and SA is going to rock… India is coming to South Africa! The change of venue is actually going to be good… it’s always getting better. The best is yet to come.

What has been the one aspect of the IPL you are looking forward to?
Taruwar Kohli: I am really looking forward to batting with Yuvraj… he has been looking over me for some time now and I would like to play alongside him.

Is revenge against the Chennai Super Kings on your mind?
We have realized the mistakes we made in last year’s semi-final. We were disappointed at the loss, but we felt good that our overall efforts were appreciated. Mistakes cost us the match and this time, we will concentrate and try to go all the way.

Most of the players don’t play as many T20 matches through a season. How do you help them prepare for a different mindset?
Tom Moody: Players are more adapting today, its not very difficult. Every player has to be on the same page and has to have the same goal as the team. That is the crucial aspect. We will also be conducting a training camp prior to the start of the season.

What are KXIP’s plans to nurture talent at the grassroot level? What are your hopes from the local youngsters that you have now in the team?
Tom Moody: We are working on a strategic plan – it is not final yet, but we are working towards ensuring proper promotion of the local talent since there is a good supply available. We, of course, judge the skill level of a player and make sure they are fit. Cricketers today have to be athletes. They must have character and possess good mental strength.

How does it affect the team’s plans now that the tournament has moved to South Africa?
Irfan Pathan: It’s totally different… the tactics will change since the wickets are different. We will need good fast bowlers and six batsmen. Thankfully, we have some Australians and players like Sangakkara who can handle any kind of pitch and attack. I’m personally confident since my first 1st-class hundred was in South Africa… we are in a way lucky with the players we have… the team will be prepared for all challenges.

Which are the teams that pose the biggest threats for KXIP?
Mahela Jayawardene: Every team is a threat! On their day, any team can be a handful. Remember, all teams have some very good international players and we need to treat all teams with respect.

Irfan Pathan: All the teams are strong and will take some beating! But I am looking forward to playing Mumbai… We will really have to play well to beat them.

Burt Cockley: The Rajasthan Royals will be the team to watch given their awesome performance last year.  Chennai Super Kings has a good line up so will also be a team to watch.

Simon Katich: The biggest threats are definitely Chennai and Rajasthan. Any team led by Shane Warne will always be very competitive and dangerous.

Is revenge against the Chennai Super Kings on your mind?
Kumar Sangakkara: We’ll make plans, we’ll try and stick to them too… beyond that, we can’t do too much.

Playing with the likes of Brett Lee... are you looking forward to it?
Ranadeb Bose: Yes! I am looking forward to learning from him. His aggression, body language, his fitness… he’s 32 and he still has a lot to offer. I am keen to know about all aspects of his game including training. Irfan Pathan is a good friend and I am also looking to learn a lot from him

What changes in the game do you see that you think are a result of the T20 format gaining in popularity?
Tom Moody: We have definitely seen changes over the last few years… batsmen are prepared to be more flamboyant. Shots like the upper cut, which were not even seen in one-day cricket are now being played in Test matches. Batsmen are prepared to take more risks to score their runs. They don’t mind getting creative to score runs.

Bedi keen to work on Yuvraj's bowling

After seeing his exploits with the ball in the ongoing Indian Premier League, legendary spinner Bishen Singh Bedi wants to help Yuvraj Singh fine-tune his bowling skills further, says Yograj Singh, father of the Kings XI Punjab skipper.

Yuvraj notched up the first hat-trick of the second edition of the IPL against the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

"Bishen is keen to work on Yuvraj's bowling. Bishen and I had a chat in this regard and once Yuvi returns from South Africa, we will sit together and see how to proceed," former Test cricketer Yograj told PTI here today.

Yuvraj took the hat-trick at Kingsmead, Durban, the same ground where he had hit six sixes off Stuart Broad in a World T20 match in September 2007.

Yograj was also of the opinion that if Yuvraj works a bit on his bowling technique he can become a 'lethal' bowler.

"I have also been trying to work on Yuvraj's bowling. At the moment, his right leg bends slightly and then the release of the ball, which should have been from over six to six-and-a-half feet, comes down to around five feet.

"I firmly believe if the release of the ball is from 6 feet above, Yuvraj can become a lethal bowler," Yograj said.

He, however, said that at the moment Yuvraj was using his thumb with the arm ball very effectively to dodge batsmen.

"Until recently, no one had thought of Yuvraj as a bowler, but if he has the potential, we must exploit it and use it for the team's benefit," he said, adding he hopes his son can take 300 Test wickets.

Captaincy is a burden: Yuvi

Bloemfontein: Kings XI Punjab captain Yuvraj Singh was in a relaxed mood after his side’s victory over the Delhi DareDevils but that did not stop him from confessing that captaincy has brought the worst out in him as he gets angry easily when his team is not doing well.

“Well, actually it is getting the worst out in me. I am getting very angry on the field, I don’t know why,” Yuvraj said after his side beat Delhi DareDevils by six wickets to keep their semi-final hopes alive on Friday.

“But hopefully ... as long as we are winning, it doesn’t matter what it brings out in the captain, so I am happy,” he added.

Yuvraj though could not hide his glee when asked about the red-hot form of Brett Lee whose three for 15 set up the match for Kings XI against the DareDevils.

“Lee made a (big difference). Since he came in, we have got better in the bowling department. He obviously brings in a lot of pace and enthusiasm.

“He has been helping Irfan Pathan and Sreesanth out too, that’s very important. So I am glad he is here,” the left-hander said.

Yuvraj was also happy that temperamental pacer Sreesanth also came good against the DareDevils after his rather forgettable show against the Deccan Chargers.

“He (Sreesanth) is coming back from an injury. He has had ups and downs but I thought he bowled really well.

“He bowled at his best and is getting better at the end of the day.

So hopefully, he will do better in the coming games for us.”

Hmmmmm...........

Preity's single again guys.. this is from Times of India
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Bollywood/Preitys-single/articleshow/4551433.cms
The vivacious Preity Zinta and the suave Ness Wadia are no longer together. You knew, of course, that all was not well between the couple that was the toast of last season’s Twenty20 tournament in India. Television cameras covering the matches of their team King’s XI in SA, always caught the two sitting separately in the stands. Not even in victory, when the team’s management spilled onto the ground, were Preity and Ness seen together.

Now the bubbly actress, who isn’t admitting openly that her relationship with Ness is over, told BT from Johannes-burg, “I’m not dating anyone right now. If I did, I wouldn’t hide it. But whatever the status of my heart, I’m certainly not the kind of person who would send out emails to people about my love life.” This, in reference to reports at the start of the IPL that she had sent emails to her team informing the players that while Ness and she were not personally together, they remained committed professionally to the King’s XI.
