Delhi Daredevils Tracker : IPL 2
« on: April 09, 2009, 03:13:43 PM »
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delhi_Daredevils

Delhi Daredevils the Delhi franchise for the Indian Premier League. The franchise is owned by the GMR Group. The team is captained by Virender Sehwag, who is also the designated Icon Player for the franchise.

Franchise history
During the franchise auction for the Indian Premier League teams, the GMR group acquired the rights for the Delhi franchise for $84 million

Performance
The Daredevils were well poised from the onset of the first IPL season, having most of their core players—with the exception of Daniel Vettori—available for the whole tournament. The team built their batting lineup around Delhi openers Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir and used the majority of their foreign player quota on their bowling attack lead by Glenn McGrath and Mohammed Asif.

The team started the tournament well, winning 4 of their first 5 games. However, they were unable to sustain this and finished the round-robin portion of the tournament with a record of 7-6. Their performance was good enough to make the semi-finals, where they lost by 105 runs against the Rajasthan Royals. Royals, who had lost to the Daredevils in their first encounter, went on to win the title.

 Home Ground
The Daredevils play their home matches in the Feroz Shah Kotla ground located in New Delhi, under the newly installed floodlights.

Brand Ambassador
Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar is the brand ambassador of the team

Nannes
DOB:  May 16,1976 at Mount Waverly, Melbourne, Victoria
Batting style: Right-hand bat
Bowling style: Left-arm fast-medium
Major teams: Middlesex, Victoria

Dirk Nannes came to cricket by chance. His first passion was skiing and he competed for several years in World Cup and narrowly missed the selection for the Australian team for Winter Olympics in late 1990s. But he gradually started taking cricket seriously and made his mark as a fast bowler for Victoria. Though he was a late starter, his rise was quick and played crucial role to help Victoria qualify for the Champions League, which was postponed. He also played for Middlesex in 2008 and helped the English county win the domestic Twenty20 Cup. In the domestic circuit in Australia, he one of the most destructive bowler with raw pace and late swing and hopefully will maintain the same level of intensity for Daredevils in his maiden IPL season.

Sekar, McGrath confident at end of Delhi Daredevils preparatory camp
07 Apr 2009 , DDD News Team

New Delhi, April 7: Delhi Daredevil’s manager, T A Sekar, and legendary star Glenn McGrath exuded a lot of confidence at the end of the short preparatory camp held for the team in Delhi.

The week-long preparatory camp conducted to get the Delhi Daredevils warmed up and ready for the Indian Premier League 2009, concluded at the Feroz Shah Kotla grounds on Tuesday. The 12 players who were part of the camp are all leaving for South Africa on Wednesday morning.

Tuesday’s practice session also witnessed McGrath and hard-hitting David Warner practice alongside the team. McGrath and Warner arrived in India on Saturday, April 4, 2009.

Also seen in action was Indian medium pacer Ashish Nehra.  Nehra who recently tied the knot with his girlfriend of six years    ;D ;D,   took time off his honeymoon period to practice with the Delhi Daredevil’s squad and get into the scheme of things for what promises to be a very competitive tournament.  Nehra who played for Mumbai Indians last season was bought over by Delhi to strengthen their bowling line-up.

“We are looking forward to the second edition of the Indian Premier League,” said McGrath. “The wickets in South Africa are pretty much like those back home in Australia and I hope to impart my knowledge and experience of bowling on tracks such as those to the younger members of the team,” he added.

“Personally, I had a bowl today and things looked good.  Over the past one year, I have worked on my general fitness at the gym and swimming pool and feel I am in good shape to be able to deliver the goods for the Daredevils,” smiled the legendary fast bowler.

“We have concentrated on improving our options on the bowling front,” said TA Sekar, Team Manager, Delhi Daredevils.  “Boys like Yo Mahesh, Aavishkar Salvi and Umesh Yadav will get to learn a lot from McGrath and Nehra.  Mahesh is a fast improved bowler since last season, while Salvi is a tricky customer courtesy his whippy wrist action.  Umesh Yadav is genuinely quick and can prove to be more than a handful on the South African tracks,” he added.

“We have a strong batting line-up. Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir at the start and then the explosive David Warner. If they get along the 20 overs will be taken care off and we can post a big total. The top order can destroy any bowling line-up in the league.  With a pool of names like AB de Villiers, Owais Shah, Paul Collingwood, Manoj Tiwary, Dilshan Tillakaratne and Dinesh Karthik to chose from, the batting seems really spoilt for choice. It will be a headache for the captain and coach on who to leave out,” said Sekar with smile.

“The spin department will rest in the hands of Kiwi Captain Daniel Vettori and Indian test player Amit Mishra,” added Sekar, who was confident of the team going better than the semi-final place last year.

Dare Devils rule! All other IPL teams beware! The top 3 will probably be Warner, She-wag and Gambhir. Kisi bhi team ki Monkey baj jayegi :)

All other teams and their supporters are henceforth termed as Gangulians for the period of IPL. :)

You may chose to pledge your allegiance to the Dare Devils and have that curse of being a Gangulian reversed.

DD and MI are the 2 best teams on paper. If they can translate it on the field, they will be in the Semis.

Nobody has restricted  if one wants to breathe between the names. The reason is both are excellent players. Unfortunately this is T20 and IMO, there is not much to chose as both are in good form.
While JFK has got both of them in his team, but will have to get one INTL player out(has 5 nos), that would disbalance bowling.

--------
Who's in, who's out

Who's in?

The Australian trio of David Warner, Dirk Nannes and Andrew McDonald were signed by the Delhi management after their successful T20 stints with New South Wales and Victoria.

The left handed pacer Ashish Nehra was the only domestic inclusion for the 2009 season with Delhi swapping the pacer for Shikhar Dhawan with Mumbai.

The Daredevils got their share of English players when they signed Paul Collingwood and Owais Shah, both for USD 275,000.

Who's out?

Mohammed Asif and Shoaib Malik will not be available for the Daredevils this season

I think you are missing the point. It is about T20. Would you like to call laxman or dravid great T20 players ? If a bat can score 35 runs with 155 SR, and has allround storkes, I think he fits in scheme of things. Just becuase DVillers has been around a long time and has playeed more cricket does not make him a better T20 player.
All I had written was DeVIllers/Warner : i.e one of two play- You come back with your one liners.  Would you care to eloborate why don't you think Warner cnanot perform at par with ABV in a T20 match ?
I know you are not going to heed the stats as well, but just incase want have a quick peek.

So just because Yusuf Pathan is an excellent T20 player ... he can replicate the same in Tests?

God has his unique thoughts. Didn't you see the example of GG given.
Anyway , This may not be completly off. The basic skills of game still remain the same. The speciialsed skills make a player more conducive to one or the other.  e.g RD going for a big hit and YPathan going for a big hit in T20 vs. RD playing a defensie stroke vs YPathan playing a defensive shot in Test match.
This makes easy to select T20 and Test players.

really?

So lets look at the skills needed.

T20 ... the special skill FROM A FEW players (not the entire effing team!) is the ability to slog ... make clean hits and get a quick 20-30 runs in 10-15 balls. Pathan has that!

In tests ... the ability to slog gets you zippo nada and shoonya. U can get a quick 30 but still suck big time!

An average of 20 with a close to 200 SR may be acceptable in T20 but would get you HUGE kick on the Ganguly in Tests.

Do I need to teach God cricket?

From  the other thread, it seems you agree with Warnie.
According to Warne, Yusuf Pathan and  ASymonds are the cleanest hitters of ball.
pls. don't ask for link.

You gotta be kidding me.. this guy is the cleanest striker of the ball & can pitch in with good # of overs of bowling,  has single-handedly won matches for RR, including the IPL final..

Is this again one of your silly prognostications like the GG one...where you backtrack and say (with your tail firmly in your backside)- "you know, I set high standards..and I am glad he met them" ;D ;D

his bowling is about the same standard as sachin's...and batting is like afridi...suited only to T20

and for the end of ODI's ... like in the last 10 overrs

Afridi has a very decent test career. He averages 37+ and has played some really crucial knocks. His 140 odd in the second innings at Chennai is not spoken about because of Sachin's 136 but that was some knock. Add his useful bowling to the mix and I think the Pak selectors made a big mistake dropping him on the basis of his ODI form. I would take him in the Indian team in place of Yuvraj.

We have the most balanced side

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The shift to South Africa is good for the pace bowlers, writes

Glenn McGrath

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I retired from international cricket, I had thought that I would never get an opportunity to play in South Africa again.

However, life has this way of surprising you, and I am back in South Africa, a country where I have really enjoyed playing.

That is the only silver lining as far as the tournament not being in India is concerned — I will miss the amazing support we got in Delhi, and hopefully will be able to enjoy it next year.

The shift to South Africa is good for the pace bowlers because the conditions here suit us, and it’s good for the Australians because the pace and bounce in the wickets is similar to what we are used to.

I score on both counts, so needless to say I am raring to go.

Real test

The 39-year-old body is feeling good, and I have really worked hard at keeping myself match-fit.

I am keenly aware of the fact that I will be playing against international cricketers who are playing through the year, and it has been my aim to keep up with them as far as fitness is concerned.

I think I am bowling as well as I did last year, but the real test will be on Sunday.

The best news for me is that I am one of the luckiest bowlers in the IPL because I don’t have to bowl against Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir and Dave Warner.

The first two have been the most consistent openers in world cricket over the last 12 months, and Warner too has made a tremendous debut for Australia, in Twenty20 cricket.

Solidity added

Looking back at last year, we had the team that could have won the tournament, but if there was an area that could have been improved upon it was the middle order.

The inclusion of Paul Collingwood and Owais Shah has ensured that there is some solidity in the middle order as well, and I feel that Delhi has the most balanced side among the eight teams in the fray.

Paul and Owais have been training with us for more than a week now, and it’s a pleasant surprise that the English lads are actually pretty good fun in the dressing room!

A lot has happened between the two IPL seasons, and I must thank my team and whole DD set-up for their patience and kindness when Jane passed away.

I am just so happy to be able to play with this team, and am focussed on one game at a time.

The Punjab team is a strong batting side, and we will have to bowl well against them. It will also be interesting to see how Brett goes, after the break from international cricket.

Injured Tiwary ruled out of IPL
27 April 2009, 5:04 am

Manoj Tiwary, the Delhi Daredevils batsman, has been ruled out of the IPL due to an injured left hand. He suffered the injury during the game against Chennai Super Kings in Durban while trying to stop a shot from Andrew Flintoff off his own bowling.

He is expected to undergo surgery in the next few days. "It's my bad luck. The surgery will be done in Johannesburg and I'll be out of action for four to six weeks," he told the Kolkata-based Telegraph. "I'm bitterly disappointed."

This is not the first time he has missed a chance to be in the limelight. A shoulder injury in 2007 forced him to miss a one-day series in Bangladesh during which he was expected to make his debut.

He should play for Kolkata.
He is one of the better local players.
But obviously, he is not gelling with the Delhi guys.
They must exchange AC with MT.
