IND-NZ 1st ODI NAPIER

Ishant likely to miss first ODI on Tuesday due to injury

India's pace sensation Ishant Sharma [Images] is likely to miss Tuesday's first cricket one-dayer against New Zealand [Images] due to injury.

The sinewy fast bowler had hurt his shoulder while fielding in the second Twenty20 international against New Zealand at the Westpac Stadium last night.

An MRI scan carried out on his shoulder on Saturday revealed a bruise.

The impact of falling on the ball is said to have aggravated an old injury.

"The MRI scan has disclosed that there is a bruise. We will watch him over the next two days. But it is likely that Ishant may miss the first ODI against New Zealand," said administrative manager Niranjan Shah, who is accompanying the Indian side.

The five-match one-day series will begin from March 3 with a floodlit contest at Napier. Wellington (Mar 6), Christchurch (Mar 8), Hamilton (Mar 11) and Auckland (Mar 14) will host the other matches.

Cricket: No surprises in NZ squad for ODIs

The New Zealand cricket squad for the first three one day internationals (ODI) against India announced today features the return of Jacob Oram, Jesse Ryder and Kyle Mills from injury.

Ewen Thompson and Nathan McCullum from the Twenty20 squad were omitted.

Head of the selection panel Glenn Turner said the squad was a strong one, which reflected the sizeable pool of players in consistent good form at international and domestic levels.

The selectors had decided not to include a second spinner in the initial ODI squad, Turner said.

"Knowing the way the Indians play spin bowling in limited overs cricket, we think the attack will benefit from having an extra seamer."

Turner said it was fortunate Mills was fit again after injury as his recent form with the new ball in limited overs matches had been outstanding.

Turner said the squad had been named only for the first three matches, to allow other players the opportunity to find form in the next round of the domestic State Championship, and in the New Zealand A side.

The first ODI is at Napier on Tuesday, followed by games at Wellington on Friday and Christchurch on Sunday March 8.

Selectors also named The New Zealand A side for the second four-day match against the England Lions.

The team is: Jamie How (captain), Brent Arnel, Daniel Flynn, James Franklin, Peter Fulton, Chris Martin, Jeetan Patel, Aaron Redmond, Ewen Thompson, Kane Williamson, Reece Young.

Turner said the A squad was strong with several first team players looking to play their way back into contention for the ODI and test matches against India.

The first four-day game between New Zealand A and the England Lions is at Queenstown Sunday March 1-4. The second at Lincoln runs March 7-10.

BLACK CAPS ODI SQUAD

Daniel Vettori (captain), Neil Broom, Ian Butler, Grant Elliott, Martin Guptill, Brendon McCullum, Kyle Mills, Iain O'Brien, Jacob Oram, Jesse Ryder, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor.

Butler makes comeback to one-day squad

While Nathan McCullum and Ewen Thompson failed to make the move up to New Zealand's one-day squad, fast bowler Ian Butler has made a comeback after five years for the five-match series against India starting March 3.

Offspinner Jeetan Patel was left out from a squad that has no regular spinners apart from Daniel Vettori. Glenn Turner, New Zealand's chief selector, said India's strength against spin prompted the decision to leave out Patel. "We think the attack will benefit from having an extra seamer," Turner said.

Jesse Ryder and Jacob Oram, who missed the Chappell-Hadlee Series earlier this month because of injury but played the two Twenty20s against India, returned in place of Brendon Diamanti and Peter Fulton.

The team management will breathe a sigh of relief over Kyle Mills' recovery from the injury that kept him out of the Twenty20s. Mills will lead New Zealand's seam attack along with Iain O'Brien, Tim Southee and Butler. In 10 State Shield games this season, Butler took 18 wickets at 19.83.

Patel, along with Thompson and Fulton, has been included in the New Zealand A squad for the second four-day game against the England Lions, starting on March 7 at Lincoln.

New Zealand ODI squad: Daniel Vettori (capt), Neil Broom, Ian Butler, Grant Elliott, Martin Guptill, Brendon McCullum (wk), Kyle Mills, Iain O'Brien, Jacob Oram, Jesse Ryder, Tim Southee, Ross Taylor.

New Zealand A squad: Jamie How (capt), Brent Arnel, Daniel Flynn, James Franklin, Peter Fulton, Chris Martin, Jeetan Patel, Aaron Redmond, Ewen Thompson, Kane Williamson, Reece Young.

I'm not sure playing Butler in the one dayers is good for the blackcaps, I don't think he will go that well, having to bowl ten overs.

Only 12 players named for 3 ODIs - why don't the NZ learn from India. I'm sure BCCI would have named a strong 16-man squad for 1st ODIs at home  :D :D

This from a fan on cricinfo:

"When Sheep/Beef farmers want rain in Napier the answer is easy - arrange an international cricket match!" Thats from Tom Corkill. Cory, 5km away from the ground in Ahuriri, says its not raining at all there.

why are we batting first?

considering that everyone knows that its going to rain...Duckworth Lewis etc

most teams have won here batting second.

inexplicable in my opinion.

other than the fact I can watch india bat..if they do...before i sleep  ;D

Dhoni is single handedly muffing it. The problem is his promotion up the order when not fluent. In 38 overs, Raina and Yuvraj would have been better bets.
