Aus vs. SA -- Test 1
« on: February 26, 2009, 08:02:29 AM »

This a big day for three members of the Australian squad - the West Australian middle-order batsman Marcus North, Tasmanian fast bowler Ben Hilfenhaus and NSW opening batsman Phil Hughes. Australia have presented all three baggy greens and it's the first time since 1985-86 that more than two men have made their debut in the same match for the Aussies. Hilfenhaus finally gets his chance after several goes as 12th man, while North and Hughes are also making their first appearances as expected. We're just waiting to hear whether it's Andrew McDonald or Doug Bollinger who misses out.

0.4 Steyn to Hughes, OUT, super start for Steyn, and a duck for Hughes on debut! Short delivery just outside off stump, rises up off the surface and Hughes jumps at it, trying to slash it over the slips, but can only succeed in getting a faint under-edge through to a gleeful Boucher, who springs up and takes the offer

And Bucknor gets one right!

Steyn to Ponting, no run, oh whats going on here? Steyn pitches this one up just outside off stump, gets it to swing back just a tad, Ponting lunges at it off the front foot, falling over, the ball jags back in sharply and there's a noise as it passes by, Boucher takes and celebrates, but there's no movement from Steve Bucknor. It is not referred. A good decision in the end, as replays indicate the ball sneaked through the tiny gap between bat and pad and clipped Ponting's trousers.

THIS ..!!

8.5 Steyn to Katich, OUT, stunning catch! And i mean stunning! Steyn pitches it just back of a length outside off stump, Katich opens the face and tries to steer the ball away but thats a brilliant effort from McKenzie at gully, diving horizontal to his right and plucking the ball with one outstretched hand, then tumbling to the ground before his team-mates and the fortunate bowler mob him

Steyn gets Clarke!!! just before tea

Steyn to Clarke, OUT, silly shot and thats the end of Clarke just before tea! A needless shot from the vice-captain, chasing one pitched up rather wide and gently starting to shape away, he's nowhere near the pitch and swings a thick outside edge through to Boucher and Steyn is red-faced in celebration

The Aussies (actually a lucky Ponting & Clarke) have played well in tough conditions & against some excellent bowling ... but have lost a wicket too many, I think, at this stage. I watched for about an hour either side of lunch ...there is definite help for the bowlers and these two counter attacked brilliantly. Had Smith not dropped a dolly off Ponting, SA would have been right on top ...but they still have a foot in the door with the lower middle order exposed now.

It will be interesting to see how the pitch plays through the match. If it is anything like the Joburg pitch we played on, 250 could be a very handy total batting first.

Australia in strong position now. 460 in first innings and SA 2/2 chasing.

Another Australian does not walk
JP Duminy walks after glowing a leg side ball to keeper. Phil Hughes stays back for the same. SA has not asked for referral not wanting to waste a chance. and it was clearly out!

ooooooooooooooooooo

lucky B J Haddin

Harris to Haddin, no run, Haddin wants a referral, the ball lands just outside the line of the offstump and straightens, Haddin goes for the sweep and the ball hits him on the knee roll, Hawkeye says it would have just missed the off stump, Bowden raised his finger initially, Asad Rauf conveys to Bowden that Haddin's safe

So much for the talk of replacing Kallis being replaced by Prince for this test !!!

Target is 454 in 149 overs.

SA are 36/0 in 10 overs. Need 418 more in 139 overs.

Anything is possible as long as that PSYCHO SMITH is still batting out there ;)
