i guess separate rules apply to the gestapo.

Original rule was that people could post whatever they want on the main board and it'd be moved in 24 hours. Then we sort of all listened to you and started moving threads for no real reason ;)

But, certain exceptions should be made when there's a hot topic like NYC trip and Oscars :P

Final Inch towards the Oscars

poignant story...

Final Inch towards the Oscars

Gulzar Saifi runs a teaching centre for school children

By Geeta Pandey
BBC News, Meerut

M Gulzar Saifi will discover this weekend whether the story of his battle to cope with the ravages of polio will bring a coveted Oscar award.

The 26-year-old Indian is the protagonist of The Final Inch - a 38-minute documentary by American director Irene Taylor Brodsky that has been nominated for a statuette in the short documentary category.

The film follows polio workers across India as they vaccinate children in an effort to eradicate the virus.

Tucked away in a little corner in Meerut town in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh is the Muslim-dominated Dhavaia Nagar colony.

Here, children run around a little square, a vegetable seller calls out the prices of cauliflower and carrots. Housewives come out to bargain and buy.

This is where Gulzar Saifi lives.

Short-lived

Saifi contracted the polio virus when he was six months' old. He had not been vaccinated - people in his village were largely illiterate and there was little awareness.

"When I was born, my family celebrated. It was a joyous occasion - I was the sixth son for my parents and we have a saying which means someone with six sons has six crutches to lean on."

Saifi says his meeting with Ms Brodsky was due to God's grace

But their happiness was short-lived. Polio, Saifi says, destroyed his family.

"Once I caught polio, my father went into shock. He lost his mental balance and never recovered and died in 2005."

With his father ill, Saifi was raised by his mother and elder brothers. Till he turned 10, he crawled on his fours "like a baby", he says.

His brothers took him to school on their bicycles and sometimes even carried him on their backs.

Thanks to their perseverance, Saifi completed school and college education. He is a post-graduate in economics and runs a teaching centre from a tiny room near his home.

"My family has been a great support, since my childhood. They never ever let me feel that I was physically challenged. They always supported me, they always gave me courage.

"My mother always said - if you have courage, you can do anything."

'Dark horse'

At midday, as we sit chatting in Saifi's teaching centre, the sound of azaan (the Muslim call to prayer) from the local mosque drifts in.

Saifi says the starring role in The Final Inch came to him by chance - it was "Allah's rehmat" (God's grace).

Saifi has tried to bring the plight of disabled people to authorities

"It was because of this azaan that I met director Irene Taylor Brodsky," he explains.

Ms Brodsky was in the area with her team to record an azaan.

"I went to her and asked her why she was there. We talked for a couple of minutes. We didn't need a translator. I think she was quite impressed by me. Then she came out of the car and we chatted for 40 minutes standing by the roadside.

"She asked me if I would work in her film on polio. I thought Allah was giving me this chance, this golden opportunity to serve humanity. So I discussed it with my family and we took it up."

After the film's nomination for the Oscars, Saifi says his life has changed completely.

"I started receiving calls from people telling me that I was the real hero. Reporters called up to say, 'we're coming to interview you, please be ready'. I can't tell you how I felt at that time. I've received so many visitors since then. People say, 'My god, you're a dark horse.' Now I've become famous all over the world."

The film has also brought him some material benefit.

"After the film was made, many new students came to join my teaching centre. Not many were aware that I was educated and fluent in English. Today, my neighbours tell their children to study hard and become like me."

Empty promises

An encounter with Saifi brings you up close and personal with the destructive impact of polio.

He wears calipers and walks with the support of a battered old iron walker. He is 26, but sometimes has to crawl.

"Look, you can climb up the stairs on foot, but I have to use my hands too," he tells me.

Saifi says polio is religion-less

India is not friendly for disabled people and it's not easy for someone with a disability to move freely. Saifi has petitioned the authorities for a hand-operated tricycle many times, but all he has received so far are empty promises.

Despite the odds, Saifi smiles easily and is mostly cheerful. But look a little deeper, and painful memories come pouring out.

"My mother died in 2002 and my father died three years later. My biggest regret is that I could not carry their body on my shoulder. I've not even shared these feelings with my family because I don't want them to feel the pain."

Saifi says polio is not a disease, it's a "disaster".

"A few years ago, I enrolled my name for a blood donation camp. When my turn came, the doctors told me they had enough blood and that they didn't need any more. When I persisted, they told me they didn't need my blood because I had polio. I was shattered, I wept for a long time."

Dismal hygiene

When Saifi got the offer to appear in The Final Inch, he was thrilled. Today, as the film vies for an Oscar, he is ecstatic.

"Earlier my family and I used to work on an individual level. But today, I am invited to speak from a larger platform, so I am able to reach a wider audience. I can create awareness about this deadly disease."

Saifi's home state of Uttar Pradesh has been the darkest corner in the world's fight against polio. Of the 549 polio cases in India last year, 297 were in Uttar Pradesh.

Extreme poverty, dismal hygienic conditions and resistance by the state's Muslim community to the vaccination drive have all contributed to the problem.

Rumours that the polio vaccine is actually a form of birth control and part of a Western conspiracy to reduce the Muslim birth rate have led to many families shunning it in Uttar Pradesh.

Saifi says people need to realise that polio is "religion-less".

"Polio is a dangerous thing for the entire world. It's not a problem for a particular country or a community. Many say polio drops will destroy our community, but that's not true. Polio doesn't affect someone thinking this person is a Hindu or this person is a Muslim."

Saifi says if The Final Inch wins the Oscar, it will encourage those who are working for polio eradication and also help in creating awareness against the disease.

For his part, Saifi hopes the film will win the Oscar.

"If a person doesn't hope, he's finished. Hope is very important. I'm confident the film will definitely get an Oscar."

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Slumdog-Millionaire-sizzles-on-global-betting-sites/articleshow/4163276.cms

This Slumdog's already a billionaire. If sources in betting circles are to be believed, as much as $2bn is riding on the story of Dev
and Latika. Less than 2 days to the 81st Academy Awards and international betting websites are predicting that Danny Boyle's
film will sweep the Oscars.

The film has been nominated in 11 categories. Boyle is the favourite for best director, beating David Flincher (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button). According to a UK-based website, Boyle's odds are 1/8, while Flincher trails at 13 to 1. In 48 hours from now, punters will feel quite like Jamal in the hot seat. If Boyle wins the Oscar for best director, a punter stands to gain one pound on ever six pounds he bet on the filmmaker
.

In the sound mixing category (where FTII grad Resul Pookutty has been nominated along with Ian Tapp and Richard Pryke), the movie is well ahead of competition with odds of 1/3. The film also leads in the best adapted screenplay category with odds of 1/3. Again, in the best film category, Slumdog Millionaire is the favourite with odds of 1/9.

While India hopes and prays for A R Rahman to create musical history at the Oscars, international websites are not so optimistic. The master composer has slipped in both categories he has been nominated in (best original score and best song). James Howard's Defiance is the favourite with odds at 1/5, while Rahman stands at 1/35.

Interestingly, despite the excitement the movie has generated in India, there have been no reports of any betting on Slumdog's chances at the Oscars here on desi shores.

Finally got around to seeing Slumdog.

Couple of things I found jarring:
(a) If he speaks hindi as a kid, how and why does he learn to speak perfect English? Why not have the whole thing in English? This would've taken out the language/accent problem altogether.
(b) I thought Anil Kapoor's role as an a-hole was done quite well even if I weren't sure why he's being an arse to the guy.
(c) Hindus killing Muslims made me cringe...was that necessary, esp. since it went un-commented, as if it is a normal everyday reality.
(d) Some stuff was done well...like that scene with amitabh and toilet!
(e) the actual questions were rather retarded in terms of their answer choices...and at least one (surdas) seems incorrect
(f) all in all, other than tight editing and no terrible dancing routines, it was a typical bollywood flick mixed with an india 101 visual lesson.

Dev Patel wrecked our relationship, says Freida's fiance

London: Slumdog Millionaire actress Freida Pinto's fiance blames the movie, and co-star Dev Patel for the end of his relationship with the actress.

"She is infatuated with Dev," jilted fiance Rohan Antoa says. The jilted fiance Rohan Antao revealed that Pinto not only compelled him to stay mum about their engagement, for the benefit of the movie, but also snubbed him to be with her onscreen lover.

The 24-year-old further said that his former love gave him the thumbs down in a phone call while she was promoting the film with her 6-year-junior co-star.

"She ended it with me after getting close to Dev Patel. Now everywhere I go I see them on billboards. I am devastated," News of the World quoted Rohan as saying.

"I hate the film. It wrecked my relationship. As soon as it became a success and she started spending all her time with Dev, she ended it," he added.

Rohan continued: "She decided she didn't want to be with me any more. She said she wanted us to be friends. But how can I be when she has destroyed my faith in love?"

"She is infatuated with Dev. I don't know if they were having a sexual relationship but if I came face to face with him I would have things to say."

"This is a very hard time for me, because as much as I don't want to let go, I have to.

"I wish her success in her career, but I can't watch the Oscars, and I don't want to watch the film--it wrecked our love."

I will watch the Barbara Walter's Oscar Night special for Mickey Rourke. I liked him a lot in "Diner"..and was disappointed to see his career go south..good to see him bounce back

Pinki brings a smile to the Oscars
"Smile Pinki," nominated for best short documentary Oscar, chronicles girl's surgery

Pinki Sonkar was born with cleft lip; her family in India couldn't afford surgery

Smile Train charity provided operation; 4 million children worldwide have cleft lips

Pinki, once an outcast because of the deformity, will attend the Oscar ceremony

(CNN) -- While all eyes seem to be on "Slumdog Millionaire" for the Oscars, one very courageous little girl will be focused on another India-based film at the ceremony.

Pinki, like millions in developing countries, had to live with her deformity and suffer the social consequences.

It's called "Smile Pinki," and it's up for an Oscar, too -- nominated for best short documentary.

The little girl watching it from inside the Oscar ceremony has traveled all the way to Los Angeles, California, from her small Indian village with her dad -- and it has been an incredible journey for Pinki Sonkar.

"Smile Pinki" tells the story of her transformation from a sad outcast to a vibrant 8-year-old with plenty of spunk.

Pinki was born with a cleft lip, and her impoverished family did not have the money for corrective surgery.

Like millions of other children born with the lip deformity in developing countries, Pinki simply had to live with it and suffer the social consequences.

Her father Rajendra Sonkar says: "She used to go to school and the kids would not befriend her. She would say, 'I don't want to go to school.'"  Watch how Pinki was transformed by the operation »

"Pinki was a depressed, sad, lonely, shy, young little girl, growing up on the periphery of the society in a little village," said Satish Kalra, director of Smile Train's South Asian region, after meeting with Pinki.

The little girl's own family was ashamed of her, Kalra says.

But all of that has changed. Pinki is now a real pistol, full of energy and confidence, and she has a fantastic smile too -- thanks to the Smile Train charity.

Smile Train teaches doctors in their own countries to operate on cleft lips, a deformity afflicting up to four million children across the world. iReport: Share your Oscar predictions

Pinki just happened to be one of the chosen candidates for surgery and was also chosen to be the subject of the documentary.

The film chronicles her transformation, following her from her village to the hospital and home again.

"She has absolutely and totally changed," said Pinki's surgeon, Dr. Subodh Kumar.

The film's director is Megan Mylan. She has won several awards but not an Oscar. This is her big chance.

For Pinki and her dad, being able to see the film's director win an Oscar would be a thrill.

But they know they already have the greatest prize: Pinki's new smile.

"I am so happy that my daughter's lips have been repaired," her dad Rajendra said with a smile, expressing hope that the movie will inspire people to help children whose families can't afford the surgery.

Interesting
I read abt this after the nominations. As is surprising:Of all the Documentaries shot in similar area on subjects, It takes a Gora team to do the promotion and complete the package. It is a bhojpuri documentary.
