Deodhar Trophy: interesting fare on the cards

CUTTACK: Despite the Prof. D.B. Deodhar Trophy limited overs inter-zonal tournament bringing down the curtains on the Indian domestic season, there is no dearth of motivation for the protagonists. At least this is what some of the captains feel on the eve of the championship.
“I think it depends on individuals,” said West skipper Wasim Jaffer. “I feel it is an important tournament where all the quality players are going to play. Good performances will certainly be noticed.”
South captain S. Badrinath too agreed with the view. “It is one of the premier tournaments of the country. The best from the each zone play against each other. It means a good showing will help,” he said.
North captain Mithun Manhas and Central skipper Mohammad Kaif opined that playing in any tournament of this statute should motivate the players to give off their best.
Adding value
To add some value to the 36th edition of the tournament, the BCCI has invited the Zimbabwe Presidents XI in a bid to inject competition as well as support the game in that country.
Zimbabwe has won 5-0 against Kenya in Nairobi and lost to Bangladesh 1-2 before coming here. The team may give a good fight to West and South in group B.
Playing against some of the best Indian players will also give the Zimbabweans the much needed experience. Former captain Tatenda Taibu, however, will not be seen in action.
West Zone looks the strongest with such fine players like Jaffer, Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Parthiv Patel and India Twenty20 specialist Ravindra Jadeja among others in the team.
The eight-time champion has won the Duleep Trophy and will like to add the one-day version too. It will open the campaign against South at the Barabati Stadium on Friday.
Right mix
South has a mix of youth and experience. Badrinath, who is in such a fine form this season, is quietly confident of his side doing well. “If we play to potential we should do well,” he said.
Robin Uthappa, Ravi Teja, R. Ashwin and S.M. Shoaib will be looking forward to make a mark.
Central will come up against North. Skipper Mohammad Kaif has a bunch of good, utility cricketers at his disposal and the lack of star value may in fact prove to be the motivating factor.
Piyush Chawla, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Tanmay Srivastava, R.P. Singh, Pankaj Singh, Naman Ojha and Murali Kartik have all proved their worth in domestic cricket.
Having won the trophy a record 11 times North will not be a pushover. The team won the title two seasons back under Mithun Manhas. There are some exciting cricketers in Virat Kohli, Vineet Indulkar, Yogesh Nagar, Chetanya Nanda and Pradeep Sangwan, to name a few.
Four-time champion East will be led by Manoj Tiwary. East’s batting will revolve around captain Wriddhiman Saha, Nataraj Behera and Sourabh Tiwary. The team has a balanced attack with a clutch of young hopefuls ready to fire.
The grouping: Group A: Central Zone, North Zone and East Zone. Group B: West Zone, South Zone and Zimbabwe President’s XI.
