I am interested in seeing who among Shiv bhai's son and Chikka's son comes up on top in terms of scoring.  Any bets on that.

Atleast chikka's son seems to have been selected on merit.

Two wrongs can never make a right. And that is only if Anirudha's inclusion was wrong.

He played 5 matches, scored 209 runs at an average of 41.80 (SR 92.07). His selection was at least justifiable.

I agree Arjun should not have been part of this squad.

But my bet is to see whose son comes out on top scoring wise and not how they got selected. :)

Will both the sons be selected in XI? If there is only one spot, who will get it?   ;D

I think Arjun will play in the 11 being the senior pro no matter who sits out. :)

Actually I looked up something.  Not playing in all of the Ranji ODI's worked in Arjun Yadav's favor.  After selecting the top 5 or so batsman based on the runs/averages from the zone the selectors went by reputation and past deeds and on that front Arjun Yadav made it in.  Don't ask me how that works but it just does and hence the justification for his inclusion. :)

We can extend this logic a little more. He should not play the Deodhar trophy  also. Daddy-o can then help choose the top 5 or so batsmen for India-A, and they can add Arjun Yadav based on reputation and past deeds.

Arjun Yadav and Jayadev Shah could be made to tour Pakistan as a good will gesture. Perhaps they can tour during Id, to add some symbolism. They will be safe, Haroon Logat guaranteed.

S S Kumar too. He thrashed 2 sixes and a 4 off Laxmi Ratan Shukla in the final over of the innings in the finals, and he single handedly won the semi finals against UP with his all round performance.
What about Abhinav Mukund. He has been in fabulous form and he is not to be seen in SZ squad..Cheeka..what is happening ?
-----------------------
I feel that Badri's chances of making to the test team is thinning with each passing day and he is not getting any younger. I feel really sad and I am sure that he is totally crestfallen.
There was a school of thought that come IPL 2 season, he might get the required mileage. I doubt very much whether he will get anything more than a couple of overs to bat on in Chennai superkings line up(with Haydos, PP,  Hussey, MSD and often a promoted Albie Morkel + Oram..ahead of Badri)..so, Badri will get some crumbs here and there...like facing last 2 balls of an innings (and an expectation of 2 6s from them) or chase some 35 out of 2 overs or something like that with Goni or Murali's company. What a talent wasted? and this is inspite of Srikanth being chief of selection

Deodhar Trophy: interesting fare on the cards

Special Correspondent

CUTTACK: Despite the Prof. D.B. Deodhar Trophy limited overs inter-zonal tournament bringing down the curtains on the Indian domestic season, there is no dearth of motivation for the protagonists. At least this is what some of the captains feel on the eve of the championship.

“I think it depends on individuals,” said West skipper Wasim Jaffer. “I feel it is an important tournament where all the quality players are going to play. Good performances will certainly be noticed.”

South captain S. Badrinath too agreed with the view. “It is one of the premier tournaments of the country. The best from the each zone play against each other. It means a good showing will help,” he said.

North captain Mithun Manhas and Central skipper Mohammad Kaif opined that playing in any tournament of this statute should motivate the players to give off their best.

Adding value

To add some value to the 36th edition of the tournament, the BCCI has invited the Zimbabwe Presidents XI in a bid to inject competition as well as support the game in that country.

Zimbabwe has won 5-0 against Kenya in Nairobi and lost to Bangladesh 1-2 before coming here. The team may give a good fight to West and South in group B.

Playing against some of the best Indian players will also give the Zimbabweans the much needed experience. Former captain Tatenda Taibu, however, will not be seen in action.

West Zone looks the strongest with such fine players like Jaffer, Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Parthiv Patel and India Twenty20 specialist Ravindra Jadeja among others in the team.

The eight-time champion has won the Duleep Trophy and will like to add the one-day version too. It will open the campaign against South at the Barabati Stadium on Friday.

Right mix

South has a mix of youth and experience. Badrinath, who is in such a fine form this season, is quietly confident of his side doing well. “If we play to potential we should do well,” he said.

Robin Uthappa, Ravi Teja, R. Ashwin and S.M. Shoaib will be looking forward to make a mark.

Central will come up against North. Skipper Mohammad Kaif has a bunch of good, utility cricketers at his disposal and the lack of star value may in fact prove to be the motivating factor.

Piyush Chawla, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Tanmay Srivastava, R.P. Singh, Pankaj Singh, Naman Ojha and Murali Kartik have all proved their worth in domestic cricket.

Having won the trophy a record 11 times North will not be a pushover. The team won the title two seasons back under Mithun Manhas. There are some exciting cricketers in Virat Kohli, Vineet Indulkar, Yogesh Nagar, Chetanya Nanda and Pradeep Sangwan, to name a few.

Four-time champion East will be led by Manoj Tiwary. East’s batting will revolve around captain Wriddhiman Saha, Nataraj Behera and Sourabh Tiwary. The team has a balanced attack with a clutch of young hopefuls ready to fire.

The grouping: Group A: Central Zone, North Zone and East Zone. Group B: West Zone, South Zone and Zimbabwe President’s XI.

Arjun Yadav, Ashwin guide South Zone to victory

Cuttack (PTI): Arjun Yadav and Ravichandran Ashwin saved South Zone the blushes as their team recovered from a miserable start to beat Zimbabwe President's XI by three wickets in their must-win Group B tie of the zonal one-dayers for Deodhar Trophy at Ravenshaw University Ground, here on Saturday.

Chasing a modest 194 from the stipulated 50 overs, South struggled to find their rhythm going.

Having lost to West on Friday, South again struggled for a good start as the Zimbabwe side got a superb start.

Robin Uthappa again failed with the bat and was the first to depart with score reading four for one in 1.1 overs. Skipper Subramaniam Badrinath (12) followed soon as South were reduced to 80 for five in 19.2 overs.

However Yadav (71) and Ashwin (50 not out) steadied ship with a defiant 97-run sixth wicket partnership.

Yadav hit eight fours and four sixes in his 90-ball knock while Ashwin hit four boundaries from 62 balls and remained unbeaten to steer South Zone home in 40 overs that also gave them a bonus point.

For Zimbabwe President's XI, leg-spinners Hamilton Masakadza claimed two for 13 while Graham Cremer took two for 31.

Earlier the visitors were bundled out for 193 in 49.5 overs.

EAST CRUSHES NORTH

Coming into Saturday’s match against East with an even chance of reaching the final, North crashed out with a 65-run loss. If coming nowhere near the target of 306 hurt, what was more painful was they fell just five short of the 245 needed to avoid conceding a bonus point.

The result left East on five points and North's tally to three — minus one from four for conceding the bonus point. Central have no points after their loss against North. This means that whatever happens in Monday’s last Group A match between East and Central, North won’t top the group.

Nothing went North's way after they put East in. They had added an extra quick in Samiulla Beigh, at the expense of off-spinner Yogesh Nagar, hoping that Mithun Manhas would share the slow bowling load with Chetnya Nanda. But the skipper injured a finger which ruled him out as a bowler.

East scored mainly in boundaries. Wriddhiman Saha and Natraj Behera were rewarded for being adventurous and Ishank Jaggi anchored the show after them. Along with Saurabh Tiwary, Jaggi (110 n.o. off 98, 10x4, 2x6) added 111 in 92 balls to push the total over 300.

Early wickets meant North's task kept getting tougher and even though there was a partnership between Aakash Chopra and Uday Kaul, 245 was always their real target.

Chopra, Kohli fined

Match referee Hemant Wasu fined Chopra 20 per cent of his match fee for showing dissent after being given out while Virat Kohli was docked 50 per cent for exchanging words with Dhiraj Goswami.
