Second century on the trot by Badrinath

Special Correspondent

— Photo: K.R. Deepak

CENTURY MAKERS: Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan (left) and S. Badrinath cross for a run during their 210-run stand.

VISAKHAPATNAM: S. Badrinath is in a punishing mood in the K.S. Subbaiah Pillai Trophy South Zone one-day tournament.

The Tamil Nadu batsman, unlucky to miss the New Zealand tour, came up with his second successive century and with an equally aggressive century from Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan laid the foundation for a 92-run win over Hyderabad at the Ukku stadium here on Wednesday.

Some consolation for Hyderabad was the consecutive five-wicket haul for its medium pacer S.M. Shoeib.

V. Manoj Sai hit a century (101, 11x4) as Andhra beat Kerala by four wickets and Karnataka prevailed over Goa by four wickets, thanks to medium pacer Robin D’Souza’s five-wicket haul.

Badrinath played with a lot of confidence and treated the crowd with his pleasing batting, his square-cuts being the best and also most used stroke. His134 came off 117 balls with 11 fours and three 6s.

Vidyut was sedate in the beginning but went into top gear playing the sweep shot to perfection and driving straight with elegance. He took 89 balls for his 101 (11x4, 2x6). Their fourth wicket stand of 210 came off 168 balls. A.B. Karthik came up with a fine half-century (63, 11x4).

T. Suman and D.B. Ravi Teja provided a breezy start to Hyderabad but the fall of three quick wickets pushed the team into trouble.

Anup Pai’s second half-century (67, 5x4, 1x6) and his 110-run stand for the fourth wicket with Abhinav Kumar (57, 4x4) was not enough for the team.

Robin D’Souza troubled Karnataka a lot and the holder needed 46 overs to reach the 176-run target. Deepak Chowgale (52 not out, 4x4) and Manish Pandey (34, 6x4) added 52 runs for the fourth wicket to steady the innings after the team was struggling at three down for 36.

Runner-up Tamil Nadu’s big win earned it a bonus point and pushed it to the top of the points table with 14 points. Karnataka is second with 13 points while Andhra has eight followed by Hyderabad with three while Goa and Kerala continue with one minus point each at the end of the third round of matches.

The scores: Tamil Nadu 342 for six in 50 overs (S. Badrinath 134, Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan 101, A.B. Karthik 63, S.M. Shoeib five for 67) bt Hyderabad 250 for seven (Anup Pai 67, Abhinav Kumar 57, Ahmed Quadri 32, T. Suman 29). (Tamil Nadu 5 points, Hyderabad one minus point)

Kerala 268 for seven (Raiph V. Gomez 86, Robert Fernandez 58, Sri Kumar Nair 54) lost to Andhra V. Manoj Sai 104, B. Sumanth 51, H. Watekar 50). (Andhra 4, Kerala 0).

Goa 168 in 43.2 overs (Swapnil Asnodkar 40, K.P. Appanna three for 34, Raju Bathkal three for 39) lost to Karnataka 171 for six in 46 overs (Deepak Chowgule 52 not out, Manish Pandey 34, Raju Bathkal 27, Robin D’Souza five for 38). (Karnataka 4, Goa 0).

Himachal downs Delhi

Special Correspondent

UNA: It was just the kind of result Himachal Pradesh needed this season. Having regained its place in the Elite group of the Ranji Trophy in style, this hilly State continued its upward swing in the North Zone one-day cricket league by hurting Delhi’s pride in a tall-scoring encounter at the Indira *hi Stadium here.

Himachal chased down 282 with two wickets and four deliveries to spare and virtually made sure of one of the two qualifying spots for the knock-out phase of the competition. The host has 13 points following its third successive victory, followed by Delhi at 10.

Delhi will have to beat Haryana on Saturday at Dharamshala to ensure qualification with a match against lowly Services in hand.

If the Himachal dressing room witnessed joyous scenes as though the team had won the final, it could not be blamed.

For long, the Himachal cricketers have been among the favourite ‘whipping boys’ of the zone for teams like Delhi, Punjab and Haryana. But in the space of five days, the host has asserted its new-found status in the zone and humbled Haryana and Delhi.

Expected victory

Now an expected victory over Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday should confirm its qualification.

On Thursday, Himachal passed the test of character with flying colours. Unlike in the past, Himachal was not intimidated by the target and went about the run-chase in a planned manner.

If opener Sangram Singh’s 52-ball 57 with a six and nine boundaries set the tone in the company of make-shift Mukesh Sharma 11-ball 20 (4x4) and one-drop pinch-hitter Vikramjit Malik 24-ball 31 (7x4), it was Paras Dogra 63-ball 44 (1x6, 3x4) who kept alive the team’s hopes in the middle overs.

Thereafter, it was Ajay Mannu 82-ball 70 (1x6, 5x4) who finished the job by getting the much-needed support from the late order batsmen.

Unlike Delhi, Himachal made things happen on this day. The initial assault launched by the Himachal top order batsmen saw Delhi concede 23 boundaries in the first 15 overs that yielded 104 runs for two wickets.

Delhi medium-pacer Pradeep Sangwan (three for 55) was the most successful, while Sumit Narwal and Parvinder Awana were equally wayward and conceded 109 runs off 15 overs between them.

Young spinners Darshan Kajania and Yogesh Nagar were more economical but that did not help Delhi much.

Himachal maintained a run-rate of over six runs per over till the 32nd over and then slowed down when the wickets fell.

But all credit to Mannu who kept his cool and took Himachal past the post. Himachal’s assault pushed into the background all the good work done by the Delhi batsmen.

Skipper Aakash Chopra’s 122-ball 100 with eight boundaries and Rajat Bhatia’s unbeaten 77 (68b, 1x6, 8x4) helped the team reach a formidable total. But on this day, Himachal was not to be denied a victory.

The scores: Delhi 281 for five in 50 overs (Aakash Chopra 100, Rajat Bhatia 77 n.o.) lost to Himachal Pradesh 282 for eight in 49.2 overs (Ajay Mannu 70 n.o., Sangram Singh 57, Paras Dogra 44). Points: HP 4; Delhi 0.

Services 181 in 49.3 overs (S.S. Lalotra 41, Amit Mishra five for 44) lost to Haryana 182 for eight in 45.4 overs (Dhruv Singh 68 n.o.). Haryana 4; Services 0.

Jammu and Kashmir 218 in 49.1 overs (Manoj Joglekar 73, Imraj Thakur 45, Ian Dev Singh 45) lost to Punjab 219 for four in 37.3 overs (Uday Kaul 79 n.o., Ankur Kakkar 44, Vikas Bhalla 41). Punjab 5; J & K 1

TN continues its dominance

VISAKHAPATNAM: Tamil Nadu continued its dominance in the K.S. Subbaiah Pillai Trophy South Zone limited-overs cricket tournament with a convincing eight-wicket win over Andhra, which also fetched it a bonus point and later, Kerala’s 15-run win over holder Karnataka put it in an unassailable position in the points table and assured it of the trophy, after the penultimate round of matches here on Thursday.

Tamil Nadu has 19 points and Karnataka has 13. Both will meet in the last round on Saturday, but this match has now become a formality, as even a bonus-point win would not be of any help to Karnataka.

Hyderabad defeated Goa by 105 runs and got a bonus point and pushed Andhra to the fourth place. Middle order batsman Devraj Patil’s 106 (105b, 10x4) almost took Karnataka, down in the dumps at four for 50, to victory.

Exciting win

But Kerala pulled off an exciting win when Karnataka fumbled in the last few overs with Patil being the last man out.

Earlier, Kerala scored 258 for nine after it decided to bat. Andhra elected to bat against Tamil Nadu and found itself in trouble, losing five wickets for 35 runs to medium-pacers R. Sutheesh and V. Yomahesh and the team pulled itself out of the woods thanks to D. Siva Kumar, who made 56 (52b, 5x4, 2x6). Tamil Nadu breezed past the target with M. Vijay 95 (12x4, 2x6) putting on 93 for the opening wicket with S. Anirudha 42 (6x4) and 81 for the second-wicket with K.B. Arun Karthik 47 not out (5x4).

The scores: Kerala 258 for nine in 50 overs (K.J. Rakesh 75, Sree Kumar Nair 68, Rohan Prem 52) bt Karnataka 243 in 47.3 overs (Devraj Patil 106, R. Bhatkal 46). Points: Kerala 4, Karnataka 0.

Andhra 190 in 48.3 overs (D. Siva Kumar 56, G.V.S. Prasad 41 n.o.) lost to Tamil Nadu 191 for two in 33.3 overs (M. Vijay 95, K.B. Karthik 47 n.o., S. Anirudha 42). Tamil Nadu 5, Andhra -1.

Hyderabad 260 for eight (D.B. Ravi Teja 63, Amol Shinde 43) bt Goa 155 in 40.3 overs. Hyderabad 4, Goa 0 .

Kohli hits third century as Delhi posts its highest score

Special Correspondent

Delhi, HP qualify

Punjab downs Services

Shikhar Dhawan escapes punishment

DHARAMSHALA: Virat Kohli’s blitzkrieg on way to his third century in four matches made sure Delhi batted out Haryana in its crucial North Zone one-day league encounter here on Saturday and earned a place in the knockout phase at Agartala.

Delhi posted its highest one-day total of 364 for six in 50 overs to clearly put the issue beyond Haryana that needed a win to stay in contention.

Haryana, without Joginder Sharma who nursed a hamstring injury, chased promisingly until the 16th over but could not build on the foundation of 101 for one and capitulated at 225 leaving Delhi worthy winner by 139 runs.

The emphatic triumph, with a bonus point, ensured Delhi’s place in the knockout phase along with Himachal Pradesh. In the last set of matches on Monday, Delhi (15 points) plays Services at Una and HP (17) takes on Punjab (9) here to decide the order of qualification.
All-win record

At Una, HP maintained its all-win sequence by stopping Jammu and Kashmir (-2) by 34 runs. In another match, Punjab expectedly trounced Services (3) by 72 runs.

Put in, Delhi set an imposing target mainly due to Kohli who dramatically changed gears after reaching 50 off 52 deliveries with five boundaries. Thereafter, he faced 30 more deliveries and smashed 74 runs studded with seven 6s and four more hits to the fence. In fact, some of his mistimed shots sailed over the ropes.

Kohli’s belligerence put to shade useful contributions from Chopra (96-ball 75, 8x4) and Dhawan (69-ball 65, 1x6, 9x4). Haryana’s skipper and leg-spinner Amit Mishra was left to rue his decision to field after finishing with unenviable figures of 10-0-86-1.

Haryana did manage to keep its hopes alive during the first two power-plays through openers Amarpreet Sonkar (61, 6x4) and Rajeev Dewan (36, 7x4).

But once Rajat Bhatia struck twice to slow down Haryana, off-spinner Yogesh Nagar and left-arm spinner Darshan Kajania took three wickets each and finished the job

Later, Delhi’s Shikhar Dhawan escaped being penalised after committing a Level One offence. Disgusted at missing out on a big knock, Dhawan let out his frustration by smashing a chair placed outside the team’s dressing room with his bat. This amounted to violation of Rule 1.2 of Level One offence that deals with, “Abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixture and fittings.”

Match Referee Sarabjit Singh heard the player, captain and the coach of the Delhi team, acceded to their collective plea for mercy and let the Delhi left-hander off with a warning.

The scores:

Delhi 364 for six in 50 overs (Virat Kohli 124, Aakash Chopra 75,

Shikhar Dhawan 65, Mithun Manhas 32) beat Haryana 225 in 43.2 overs (Amarpreet Sonkar 61, Nitin Saini 43, Rajiv Diwan 36, Yogesh Nagar three for 34, Darshan Kajania three for 46). Delhi 5; Haryana –1.

At Una: Himachal Pradesh 284 for eight in 50 overs (Vinit Indulkar 58, Paras Dogra 52, Sangram Singh 50, Ajay Mannu 42, A. Sheikh three for 72) beat Jammu and Kashmir 250 in 48.2 overs (Imraj Thakur 117, Ian Dev Singh 53, Ashok Thakur four for 44, Mukesh Sharma four for 49). Himachal 4; J&K 0.

Punjab 240 for seven in 50 overs (R. V. Singh 126, Ankur Kakkar 74) beat Services 168 in 49.5 overs (Yashpal Singh 53, Taruwar Kohli three for 26). Punjab 5; Services –1 .

TN regains Subbaiah Pillai Trophy

Special Correspondent

— Photo: K.R. Deepak

WINNING SMILES: The Tamil Nadu team which clinched the South Zone one-day cricket tournament for the Subbaiah Pillai Trophy in Visakhapatnam on Saturday.

VISAKHAPATNAM: Tamil Nadu won the K.S. Subbaiah Pillai Trophy after a gap of four seasons with an all-win record and Hyderabad surged to the runner-up spot thanks to the penalty points conceded by Karnataka and Andhra in the final day’s matches on Saturday.

Hyderabad medium pacer S.M. Shoeib’s seven for 15 was responsible for Hyderabad’s big win.

Tamil Nadu completed its engagements in style, beating Karnataka by 124 runs and grabbing a bonus point.

The penalty point being docked from its total tally and Hyderabad’s bonus-point win over Andhra saw holder Karnataka losing the second place to Hyderabad by just one point.

Goa finished with a win in its last match, beating Kerala by 19 runs.
Plan backfires

Karnataka’s apparent plan for a bonus point seemed to have backfired as it started chasing Tamil Nadu’s total of 298 at the Ukku Stadium. Also Tamil Nadu medium pacers R. Sutheesh, Yomahesh and C. Ganapathy bowled well and continued to put pressure on Karnataka batsmen.

However, opener Robin Uthappa (54, 6x4, 1x6) played with assurance and after Sutheesh claimed Devraj Patil early he added 45 quick runs with Manish Pandey and 37 for the next wicket with B. Akhil (16) before Yomahesh claimed him.

Karnataka’s hopes was raised again when Sunil Raju (23) and Raju Bhatkal (32, 2x4) put on 50 runs for the sixth wicket. But off-spinner M. Vijay removed the tail-enders.

This turned out to be a good match for Vijay who made 51 (4x9) and provided a good start S. Anirudha (69, 13x4, 1x6). Later S. Badrinath (52, 49 balls, 6x4, 1x6) and Vidyut (44, 2x4, 2x6) added 91 runs for the fourth wicket off 86 balls.

The scores: Tamil Nadu 298 in 49.5 overs (S. Anirudha 69, M. Vijay 57, S. Badrinath 52, Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan 44, S. Arvind three for 39, Sunil Joshi three for 51) bt Karnataka 174 in 37 overs (Robin Uttapa 54, Raju Bhatkal 32, M. Vijay three for 13). Tamil Nadu 5, Karnataka -1.

Andhra 130 in 41.1 overs (H. Watekar 49, M. Suresh 35, D. Siva Kumar 30, S.M. Shoeib seven for 15) lost to Hyderabad 133 for four in 32.1 overs (D.B. Ravi Teja 67 n.o., Amol Shinde 28 n.o.). Hyderabad 5, Andhra -1.

Goa 230 in 49.4 overs (Ajay Ratra 57, Madhu Kamat 47, Prasanth P three for 34) bt Kerala 211 in 48.2 overs (Rohan Prem 52, K.J. Rakesh 26, Prasanth P 26, H.H. Gadekar three for 47). Goa 4, Kerala 0.

Final position: 1. Tamil Nadu (24 points), 2. Hyderabad (13), 3. Karnataka (12), 4. Andhra (6), 5. Kerala (3), 6. Goa (2).

I think people forgot about Kohli.  He made a decent debut and since with likes of SRT appearing in all these ODI's which mean nothing for most part he is robbed of his rightful place in the 15.  I hope he is first up in the list in case of an injury to someone.

why would you want vk replacing SRT? as long as srt is getting runs, which he did not in the last series but i am sure he will on this tour, then it does'nt hurt to have hm around. though in our selection structure he might get dropped right after he has a great year. i remember a left hander who was treated like that in the recent past.

Here's the Knockout schedule for the Vijay Hazare trophy

2nd Preliminary Quarter-Final: Delhi v Railways at Agartala - Feb 28, 2009
1st Preliminary Quarter-Final: Orissa v Tamil Nadu at Agartala - Feb 28, 2009

2nd Quarter-Final: Baroda v Hyderabad (India) at Agartala - Mar 2, 2009
1st Quarter-Final: Himachal Pradesh v Uttar Pradesh at Agartala - Mar 2, 2009
4th Quarter-Final: Bengal v tbc at Agartala - Mar 4, 2009
3rd Quarter-Final: Mumbai v tbc at Agartala - Mar 4, 2009
1st Semi-Final: at Polytechnic Institute Ground, Agartala - Mar 6, 2009
2nd Semi-Final: at Maharaja Bir Bikram College Stadium, Agartala - Mar 6, 2009
Final: at Maharaja Bir Bikram College Stadium, Agartala - Mar 9, 2009

Why are the top 2 teams in the league phase - TN (Only team to win 5 games) and Delhi playing Pre-Quarterfinals while lower placed teams get a bye into quarterfinals? Shouldn't the top 2 teams get the bye?
At least Delhi is playing Railways which has the lowest pts total (8). TN has to play Orissa which has more points (13) than Mumbai, Baroda and Railways. On top of that in the next round one of the top 2 teams  faces Bengal which also won all its matches (so, should've been in the top 3 seeds) and finished on top of their league table. This is totally f***d up scheduling by BCCI. :BangHead: :BangHead:

If I am not mistaken, Delhi did not top their group. Himachal Pradesh did.

The rest of the stuff appears strange, I agree.

No, Delhi has 19 pts and HP has only 16 pts (negative pts vs Punjab in last round)
Delhi   5   4   1   0   0   19
HP     5   4   1   0   0   16

Oh ok. I did not realise that. I thought HP had some kind of unassailable lead going into the last rounds. How do you get negative points in a match??

Yes, HP had an unassailable lead - to get into knockouts not to top the table. Negative pts are another one of brilliant BCCI plans ::). If a team beats you with a bonus point, you also lose a point. This actually booted karnataka out of the knockout round. All they had to do against TN in the last match was to not lose big. With TN scoring < 300, it was not too tough. But they got greedy, tried to win the match (with bonus pt. simple win was not enough) and become toppers of the league (an admirable sentiment IMO - always go for a win), they lost big and hyd overtook them by a point :)

It is sad to see UP not chase down 197 facing a Balaji less TN.

Kaif at this stage can bid adieu to his International career what with so many exciting prospects waiting in the wings.

Badri is one guy who should not be demoralised despite being ignored repeatedly.  His is a case always first in line to replace someone.  Yuvi took over in Tests for SG and Raina/Rohit preferred in ODI's.  I have no qualms about ODI's but he should have played Tests by now.

Also one has to give Bengal full credit for making it to the finals despite being in the plate division this year.  Saha and Dinda look like good prospects and in the Elite division if they do well this coming year I think they have a chance.  And Tiwary himself had not done too badly off late.

Badrinath to lead

Bangalore: S. Badrinath will lead South Zone in the Deodhar Trophy limited overs tournament at Cuttack from March 13 to 18.

The team: S. Badrinath (captain), Robin Uthappa (vice-captain), Anirudha Srikkanth, Ravi Teja, Arjun Yadav, V. Manoj Sai (wicket-keeper), R. Ashwin, K.P. Appanna, S.M. Shoaib, S. Aravind, Yo Mahesh, Robin D’ Souza, P. Prashanth, Arun Karthik and S. Anoop Pai. Coach: Raghuram Bhat; Manager: R. Sudhakar Rao; Physio: Vinod Jain; Trainer: Nagendra Prasad. — Principal Correspondent

This list from the recent tournament shows how many others had to miss out because of the one reserved spot in the team.

S S Kumar too. He thrashed 2 sixes and a 4 off Laxmi Ratan Shukla in the final over of the innings in the finals, and he single handedly won the semi finals against UP with his all round performance.
