TOSS strategy for ODI-1 at Delhi?
« on: March 28, 2006, 12:29:15 AM »
If RD wins Toss, do we bowl first?
Given that we have recently almost exclusively won chasing the target?

Some of u may think, we should experiment and try to set the target and win (as a practice), I think those can be done after we first ensure that we have a decent lead in the ODI series to start with...

If Freddie wins the toss, I think he will surely put India into bat...since ENG usually fancy themselves as better at chasing a known target...

With big guns - SRT injured and VS partially fit, I think batting first and setting an IMPOSING total will be very difficult...

So, my take WIN TOSS, BOWL FIRST...What are your opinions?

Also, any ideas abt DELHI pitch?
CURATOR Says:  http://in.rediff.com/cricket/2006/mar/27curator.htm

Daljit Singh: ""The pitch will not be easy in the morning for the batsmen for the first hour or so. The weather is very cold in the morning. The match will start early at 9 am so you can expect some early help. A 10 am start would have made some difference," said Singh, who oversaw the preparation of the pitch."

By the way, why have a 9am start and have this undue advantage??? Why can't we start at 10am and have more neutral conditions!!!!

In anycase, if Ind bats first, I think KAIF should open (GG should not be in the 11)...We need to negate first one hour of swing bowling, and Kaif can probably play a dour knock!? to see of the first spell of hostile bowling from Hoggard/Flintoff/Anderson...after that, we can get the people who can play more strokes.

if freddie wins toss, and we bat first then:
TARGETS:
10 overs: 40 for no loss (worst: 40-1)
20 overs: 90-1
30 overs: 140-2
40 overs: 200-4
50 overs: 285 runs  (300 if in the middle overs we can up the tempo)

Main idea is to be NO MORE THAN 4 wickets down at 40 over mark...Keep wickets in hand, and then go for the slog in 40-50, conventional way)...Too much attempted at 9am-10am would end up with
15 overs, 40-4...just accept the fact that 9am start means, at the beginning batsmen have to play carefully.

Hence, the less strokeful (and more careful?) Kaif shud Open if we bat first.
