Australian Open 2009
« on: January 14, 2009, 07:26:03 AM »
Somdev vs. Prakash in qualifying round 1...to qualify from their side one of them will have to beat andreas beck of germany...good player ranked 102.

Andreas Beck GER (2)
v
Brendan Mckenzie AUS

Martin Fischer AUT
v
Kyu Tae Im KOR

Edouard Roger-Vasselin FRA
v
Lukasz Kubot POL

Prakash Amritraj IND
v
Somdev Devvarman IND (28)

prakash might beat somdev but doubt he'd go very far
-------------------------------------------------------------

sania barely making the cut...but will have a hard draw (not out yet) as her ranking has fallen of due to injury time off
------------------------------------------------------------
the biggest indian to watch out for will be in the junior's division...yuki bhambhri, who i suspect will be as good as somdev in 2-3 years. he won the orange bowl recently...which is how the likes of federed and courier started
------------------------------------------------------------
theres of course paes and mahesh...can count for a doubles or mixed doubles slam at least

Text Commentary at bbc.com
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
0949: If you're eagerly anticipating Roger Federer's opening match, I recommend you put the kettle on and make yourself a very large cup of tea. We're currently enjoying a classic women's match on Rod Laver Arena, and by that I mean a feast of unforced errors, breaks of serve and momentum swings. Casey Dellacqua and Daniela Hantuchova are in a tiebreak at the end of the first set.

Men's draw looks now very interesting with all top players in the Top 16. It is a tough call to say who will win. Women's on the other hand is shaky since no one really stands out.

Watch out for Tsonga again this year. Though he is suffering from back-ache (Disc Hernia), he is quite capable of going far..into at least semi-finals.

that is not very good. You can always talk about why his game is not as good as Fed or Nadal's but calling him a piece of sh*t. At least he has won 1 ( is it 2 ?) grand slam and not that he has not beaten Fed earlier.

What is not very good....Him not beating Federer.  When was the last time he beat Federer in a meaningful match...Plus every now and then I like to call players that when I do not like the outcome of a match played by two players I do not care much for.  In other words I wanted the personal pimp of Roger to come out on top in this match.   Him not doing that pissed me off to no end invoking that reaction....I guess I explained enough.

Fed fans will hope that Verdasco does a Tsonga. I don't see him winning the title if he faces Nadal.

He admitted he has mixed feelings about who he would prefer to face.

"I'd like to play Fernando because he's never played a Grand Slam final before. I have an edge there," said the 27-year-old.

"Playing Rafa is obviously more exciting because of the history we have, playing in so many Grand Slam finals.

"Him being the best player in the world at the moment, it would make it a very intriguing match."

Nadal is the only player to have beaten Federer in a Grand Slam final, three times at the French Open and once at Wimbledon.

But Federer said he could not be happier with his form in 2009 after struggling with the after-effects of glandular fever at last year's tournament.

"I do feel better mentally. I'm obviously more healthy so I can focus on playing well," he said after seeing off Roddick in straight sets.

"I'm really pleased about my performance so far in the tournament. The draw was difficult and dangerous if you look back on who I had to play."

It is a difficult call. I think Verdasco will give a tough fight, if not win. If Nadal wins it will be still a tough match for him in the final since this is a hard-court surface on which he does not have a great record. I will still go for Federer if he continues his form of these last two matches.
