from cricinfo:

Cricket is under a cloud of fear and the MA Chidambaram stadium is now virtually a fortress, what with commandos and top-level security officials everywhere. Is that whats keeping the crowds out? There are hardly any spectators in.

from my sources in Chennai, what is keeping spectators away is possibility of rain. Given the BCCI's stupid no refund clause, spectators will come only if there is no rain and it looks to be sunny all day.

btw, there is apparently oppressive security starting from 5 kms radius of the ground and no one allowed to carry anything into the ground except your wallet !!! No cell phones, cameras, keys !!! It is foolhardy to expect crowds to turn up with all these measures in place !!! Also no water bottles allowed - one has to eitehr drink non-mineral water or buy water !!! Ridiculous facilities !!

I think it is a dumb move to not play Shahji in the sub-continent. He is their best player of spin.

from cricinfo:

"The reason for the poor attendance is that people have work to do, for goodness sake, and don't have time anymore to goof off for five days. This isn't India of the 1990s where one can conveniently develop a stomach ache on match days. Jobs are hard to come by, layoffs are in the air, there is a recession on and watching Dravid make 10 runs off 10,000 balls isn't exactly on anyone's priority

A good reply:

Micky: "I am just replying to Raja's email. I think when people say test cricket is dead, you have to come to the MCG where every boxing day test match sell's out with 100000 people on Day 1 and 2. The hype here regarding the SAF Aus series is great. 20/20 cricket is good fun, but it will NEVER compete with Test cricket, as most players/fans will say. A true cricketer is measured by his performance in test matches, not in the "hit or miss" style of T20! And I think India keep forgetting that Dravid has made 10000+ test runs and saved India many many many times, even more so than Saachin at times. Cut the guy some slack."

I was there at MCG last year on Boxing day. Tickets were sold old few months in advance. What an experience that was. Attendance was close to  90000 and the Indian crowd was matching Aussies in numbers.
I don't think this year's Aus-SA boxing day test will attract that many people. I may only buy the ticket on the day at stadium if i decide to go.

Good start by England ..the pitch looks dead

harbhajan bowling tripe as usual ...

people who talk about boxin day crowds dont realize that boxin day comes in holiday season ...

of course why would the bcci come up with a regular schedule where every major center gets an annual cultural test match ? bah ...

Not able to follow this test :(

Is the pitch flat like Ind vs SA match? If yes, this is bad for test cricket

Having said that 500 is par for the wicket Eng have ground themselves to dust. Very slow going and lost 4 wickets so far.

20 min past 4:30 ..and we still have an over or so to go !! This with 3 spinners bowling close to half the overs. Is the official close of play at 4:30 or 5?

500 was/is still par - Colly was undone by a shocker from silly billy and KP looked out of sorts and played a poor stroke. Zaheer was the standout bowler by a mile while bhajji and mishra were bowling trash !!

And since Zaheer managed to reverse the ball quite a bit, Freddie may prove to be a handful too.

What KIC said is coming true - Zaheer is coming of age as a bowler at home !!!

That Colly decision was a shocker but worse was the way it was appealed all in unison. I am not sure if everyone was convinced that Colly was out but MSD could have really made it a memorable match if we had called him back.!

either way if rain stays away and we dont make a hash of it ... we are in with a big chance to pull off the win here - get them out below 320 should be the first task IMO.  ::cheers::
